Actually these people die because jigsaw has a personal grievance with the man being tested (william) because william rejected his insurance policy coverage while he was terminally ill, so he was proving a point of that it's not so easy to make that choice when you actually see the consequences first hand. These people were chosen because they helped reject 2/3 of the applications so William had to reject (kill) a minimum of 2/3 of them.

I don't get this concept. Jigsaw wants to do all these traps so people can appreciate life a little bit more, but he never gives a second. He kills them if they don't get it right the first time. But none of them deserved these deaths. Maybe if the victims were more like The Devil's Rejects Killers or the sadists from Last House on the Left.
