  • What do you use for scales? Is it some kind of thick paper or plaster?

  • @Stafli

The scales are cloth dipped in glue. If you are interested you can find information about my techniques on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) or my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

    Dan

  • how do you make the teeth? do you cook them in the oven?

  • @gregoC13

Hello. Yes, I use polymer clay, usually "Fimo" but you can use "Super Sculpy" to name a couple. You bake them in the oven. You can get it any place they sell craft supplies.

    Dan

  • thank you to WKJR

  • must tack weeks to do it hek the cat whas fooled

  • @redgreen09

It takes a few weeks to make. Thank you for the nice comment.

    Dan

  • Do you sketch drawings of your critters b4 u start? I'm really impressed.

  • @rriverstone1

    Hello there.

No, I don't sketch anything out first. Most of the time they just grow. Thank you for your nice comment.

    Dan

  • how many layers do you happen to put on ? Plus how long does the glue usually take to dry

  • @AddiiCeeme

Hello there. I put on about 3 or 4 layers of paper in the beginning stage. That phase takes two or three days to dry depending where you put it and how hot it is.

    Dan

  • HI! THIS IS WONDERFULL! I LIKE VERY MUCH YOUR WORK, CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT KIND OF PAPER USE FOR DETAILS, THE WHITE PAPER, THANKS.

  • @Alnitak5

Hello there. I use newspaper for the first phase. The white "skin" is cloth dipped into white glue. I have much more information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested in my techniques.

    Dan

  • YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!

  • @marizagonzalez28

Thank you! You rock for writing! I really appreciate it.

    Dan

  • soooo Awesome!

  • @AddiiCeeme

    Dan

  • this magical!

  • @kikobagunu

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the nice comment!

    Dan

  • I'm dying! I was watching the video and then thought I saw someone handing you bits from across the table. I backed the video up to pause and saw it was your KITTY!! Silly kitty, cats don't make paper mache!

Great video... very informative! You may have just changed the way I make things! (Which is fun, since I'm just starting out!)

  • @thelaynie

Yes, this was my cat Eddie. He loves to help me in my studio. He loves to grab anything I'm using. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Good luck on your projects. Let me know if I can help.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan As I said on your blog, you've already helped more than you know! Thanks so much for being so helpful and open with what you do. It's amazing, and inspiring, and ... ah, insert lots more gushing praise. :D

  • @thelaynie

Sorry, I just noticed the last part of your login. You've really helped me with your information about polymer clay! Thank you!

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan Oh, don't worry, that's why I mentioned I'm the same person! It's so easy to not realize people are the same person. :D

  • what is the paperish cloth stuff you use on like the wings?

  • @demonx242

    Hi again,

I put on a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue (like Elmer's). I have lots more information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested.

    Take care

    Dan

  • lol..amazing..!..love it..

  • @davycrocketful

    Thank you!

    Dan

  • EXCELENT! GREAT WORK THANKS FOR THE POST

  • @ccz1826598

Thank you for the nice comment! I really appreciate it.

    Dan

  • How did you make that form that allowed you to cut out a 'hollow shell' afterwards? Do you make a basic form, cover it with masking tape (and oil maybe?) then put the 'shell' paper layer down? This allows you to not rely on balloons to make any forms?? Any tips on doing this?? Thanks!

  • @playgroundtown

I don't use balloons. Too symmetric. I just crumple newspaper and cover it with paper mache. I sculpt with that using masking tape. If you are interested in my techniques you should visit my site, gourmetpapermache (dot com) or my blog, papermacheblog (dot com).

    Dan

  • 1:19

  • @pradamomkat

Yes, everyone knows that you have to fend off the frequent cat attacks to finish any art project! Thank you for noticing.

    Dan

  • what's that black thing your using dan??pls i wanna know...

  • @amL031797

Do you mean the painting at the end? I just water down black paint. Then I paint it on and wipe it off before the paint dries. It accentuates the details. I call this process "blackwashing."

    Dan

  • I love your work! The detail, shape and how much work was put into it! Could you try making a mother dragon and her hatchling, perhaps?

  • @neptunebabydance

Hello there. Thank you for the nice comment. Actually, I did make exactly the video you suggest. It's here on Youtube called, "Paper Mache Sea Dragon". The hatchling shows up at the end. Check it out.

    Take care

    Dan

  • your work is amazing

    Dan

  • @lifeisheavan

Thank you. That's Eddie. He shows up a lot. He is always underfoot when I work.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan I'm doing a chicken head for my art project, do you know how I could add real feathers to it? I have 100 peacock feathers and 400 monochrome speckled feathers - thanks!

  • @maxandmaggie18

Thank you! I'm glad you like the project. I have lots of information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com).

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

    Dan

  • Hi, What is the white pieces of paper that you cover the newspaper with? what mixture of paste do you use?

  • @nataliedutoit24

The first stage is just paper mache with flour and water paste. Nothing special. I put on a final "skin" of cloth dipped in white glue. There is more information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

    Dan

  • From one artist to another, your work is absolutely amazing! Do you make these professionally? Because I would be willing to bet people would pay top dollar for your work. :)

  • @Loki13outlaw

Thank you for the wonderful comment! It is especially flattering coming from another artist. I do sell some of my work. But I teach school for a living.

    Take care

    Dan

  • dude what kinda material did you you use for those little teeth/fangs?

  • @MISTERman34

That is just "Fimo", but there are many brands of polymer clay that will work, including "Super Sculpy". Any hobby place will have something like this.

    Dan

  • Dont those paper mache monsters scare you at night

  • @momostluv

Not me, but I must say, my daughter slept with her bedroom door closed for many years because of the dragon hanging on the wall outside her room. I had no where else to put it.

    Dan

  • Cats>Parrots.

My first project...it was sad after the parrot got his beak onto it.

  • @xenubarb

Bad parrot! Of course, totally understandable.

    Dan

  • wtf a cat

  • @haloreachguy34

Hey there. Yes, my cats are always in the way. They love it when I work. That's why they always get in the photos.

    Thanks for watching.

    Dan

  • amazing !!!!

  • @mili7i

Thank you! Very nice of you to comment.

    Dan

  • hey man that is incredible! looks like it has been sculpted from clay! very good work! :D

  • @themaskboy1234

Thank you for the very kind words! I really appreciate it. Made my day.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan in fact you inspired me to try something! i am quite artistic, i make latex masks and this is amazing and i would like to try! thanks for sharing your talent lol! been watching all your vids! :D

  • @themaskboy1234

You are very welcome! There is no greater compliment to an artist than to hear someone say something like that. Thank you! And good luck with your next project!

    Dan

  • hi! I have a qustion, I'm making a wolf paper mache sculpture/modle, and I was wondering how you got all the wrinkles and details. For the last layer, do you use paper? Tissues, or what? And if you don't use tissues or tissue paper, would they still work??

    Thanks for reading, Tahlia.

  • @theGirlFlippy

    Hello Tahlia,

What you see me applying for the last layer is cloth (an old bed sheet torn into strips) dipped in white glue (all purpose glue like Elmer's). That allows for a lot of detail and also makes the project very strong.

You can get a lot more information on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

    Good luck! Sounds like fun!

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan Thanks for the advise!! I'll see if I can get some old bed sheets,

    Tahlia

  • Hello Dan! My name is Sarah. I have a question... what inspired you to start doing paper mache?

    - Sarah Yeager

  • @Hedgelette

    Hello Sarah,

Nice to meet you! Interesting question. I was teaching elementary kids and wanted an art project that would be "goof proof." So we made monsters. I make projects with them and before long I had many pieces. Along the way I developed techniques that worked well. I was hooked. I'm still as excited about the medium now as I ever was. It's great fun.

Thanks for the question. Take care

    Dan

  • @atomikus37

Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

    Dan

  • completely understand. you're a pretty inspirational dude. started making mine yesterday.

  • @impulse120291

Good for you! Let me know if you have questions. I'm happy to help.

    Dan

  • Hey Dan, do you think when you get a chance, you could upload some more tutorials on your website?

  • @impulse120291

I've been trying to get to more tutorials for a while now. Just not enough time. I'll see what I can do.

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Amazing you are a true Artist ! beautiful work ! please keep the videos coming!

    Dan

  • I luv ur art andf ur cat! ^w^

  • @ZoggaZozo

Yes, I have three cats. They are always under foot when I work. Thank you again.

    Dan

  • whats that finish for the fins called.......like what is it called....and where can u get it?????

  • @cheezeflippenit

Do you mean the webbing? That is just cloth (an old bed sheet torn into strips) and white glue (Elmer's).

    Dan

  • Amazing work...or play. Love the fish!

  • @Emshobee

Thank you so much for the nice comment! I'm glad you like the work (my fun).

    Dan

  • That is wonderful, you made this look so easy with this video hehe. And I love the effect when you painted the fish black and then wiped it off! By the way, what sort of paint did you use? I see that you kinda peeled it off in some areas...

  • @MissUnrefined

Thank you for the nice comment! I just use latex based paints, basically housepaint (interior or exterior). Since it doesn't stick to glass I can peal it off the eyes. And it will come of "Fimo" which I use for claws and teeth.

    Take care

    Dan

  • Just Awesome! Absolutely love that you "recycle" for a living. Also love "Eddie's" contribution.

Hope you don't mind a few questions. What model video camera are you using? How long did that whole process actually take, including the drying time? What speed is that in the video?

Will you be producing a video for purchase of your technique?

I hope to get to meet you someday soon.

P.S. I met "Extremo the Clown" last year. His car art is amazing too. Nice to see he knows of you too.Thx.

  • @americanvintagerv

This video is one of my older ones. I was using a different camera then. If you look at my newer videos you will see that they are much clearer. I am now using a Samsung HD camcorder (sorry, I can't remember the exact number off hand). I just put it over my workspace and let it take time lapse. This is a frame a second. I don't have videos for sale, but I do have how to books that are fully illustrated. They are on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com). more later

  • @americanvintagerv

I also have some slower, instructional videos on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it.

    Dan

  • fish eyes are on the side..

  • @TheConspiredONE

This is not a real fish. It's art. But thanks for the comment.

    Dan

  • Hot damn you are brilliant.

  • @GlompoFie

Thank you so much for the enthusiastic comment!

    Dan

  • recycling is cool

  • @mrbonaparte

    I agree. thank you .

    Dan

  • awsome cat... gives this video some comedy

  • @jcarrigan0

Thank you for the nice comment. That is Eddie, one of my three cats. They are always underfoot which is why they always end up in the videos.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @extremotheclown

Yes, sometimes it's just positioned over my table, others it's on a tripod filming from the side. Nothing special really.

    Dan

  • @extremotheclown

That was amazing! I can imagine the looks you get! Thank you for sharing that with me.

    Dan

  • @extremotheclown

That's Jonni who made the elephant. We exemplify the two kinds of mache. I do the paper strip and paste. She does the "mashed" paper approach. Each has its merits. I made a very large elephant (and a donkey) for the political season. It was commission for a restaurant. If you are interested in that (or instructional videos or photos of building) they are on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

    Take care

    Dan

  • @extremotheclown

So you actually are a clown! Amazing and fun. I enjoyed watching the video on your channel about laughing. Great job!

    Dan

  • you have some great skils.you can be a star :D

  • @Delvstrand

Thank you for the nice comment. I'm really happy that you like the work.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • great work... i really love your work.. what are those teeth made up?? is that paper also???

  • @chubbymondragon

Thank you for the nice comment. I made these teeth out of "Fimo", a plastic material you mold and then bake in the oven. "Super Sculpy" works. There are many variations at stores that sell craft materials.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • I've watched all youre video's now and I really really like them!

I was looking for some insparation I defenattely found it!

I only have one question what do you use for the teeth?

  • @EefJuhHh

I've been using "Fimo" for the teeth. It is a plastic you bake in the oven. There are several similar products, "Super Sculpy" etc. You can get it wherever they sell craft supplies.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you are inspired. Now make some art!

    Dan

  • wow!! your work is just amazing, I really enjoyed watching this video, twice!!

  • @rmguinn

Well that's about the best compliment you can get on Youtube, that someone would watch the video more than once. Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • a few questions, that party that we see mostly in a yellowish color, what is that masking tape?? and at some paoints when you are giving details to faces and detail areas, it looks like you are using something like bandages with some sort of white paste, can you tell me what is that? is it plaster of paris?

  • @rrleonc689

    Hi there,

Yes that is masking tape. What you are seeing is the "skin" I add at the end of cloth (old bed sheets torn into strips) dipped in white glue (Elmer's). It makes the project very strong and is perfect for details.

I noticed that you ordered my book. Thank you. It will explain everything in great detail.

    Take care

    Dan

  • whats that stuff you start to put on the fins at around 1:35?

  • @clutch50

That is cloth dipped into white glue. Works perfectly for dragon wings and fins.

  • Really good stuff - I like your work with dragons too.

  • @jasonayoub

Thank you Jason! That's very nice of you to say.

    Dan

  • Fantastic work~! My friend attempted this but didnt quite get the result... Do you think you can give us a rough instruction on how you did this magnificent piece of work? We really need to get this done for our final project please~!

  • @mangoheng

    Hello there.

I do have information about my techniques (including a few slower, instructional videos) on my site and blog. It's difficult to write down all the steps but those resources should help.
