The first time I finished the game I had this feeling that was hard to describe. I was definitely depressed, but I felt more than that. I'm not sure. It was more like being devoid of emotion. :/
@MrsTwinLover And to think it's all going to be screwed over by the new voice-acting being featured in the upcoming HD collection.....once again, Konami fucks up another treasure.
@dave55811 I don't think there changing the voices. I think there just rebuffing the quality to a better look(aka HD) if there remaking the voices(and the animation) then it would be more of a remake, right? there just re releasing the game(sorry if this comment sounds confusing,)
@MrsTwinLover It's true; this is a re-release, but I heard (and saw an official clip) some of the new voice-acting in certain scenes. Although I heard that James' original voice-actor, Guy Cihi (Chi? I forget), wrote some open letter to Konami requesting that SH2 be re-released with the original voice-overs intact.....or, if possible, include the original voices from 2001 as an option in the game. It's all deep legalese stuff, though.....and I'm sure Konami will tell him to eff off. :/
The situation with the recasting of the voice actors for the Silent Hill 2 HD is a very, very, very weird and unusual one. They re-recorded all of the voices purely because Guy Cihi was demanding residuals for all of the copies of SH2 sold (which never happens, by the way, so that was an over-the-top request). Guy refused to allow Konami to use his audio, so they re-recorded the entire cast for consistency's sake. However, about a week ago...
@TheShockMaster Consistency sake? I never heard that as a reason for the re-recording of everyone, but I guess it makes sense. Though I think everyone would prefer them to only recast those necessary (James at the time, Douglas cause he's dead) but keep everyone else. Not to mention it'd be a lot easier, cheaper, and less time consuming.
Guy gave up and signed a waiver saying that Konami could re-use his audio without paying him if they wanted. All of the other original voice actors signed the same waiver. So now, Konami *could* use the original recordings if they wanted...but they already recorded a whole new set of voices. So that means they either re-use the original voices (effectively meaning that they re-recorded all the voices for nothing), or they use the new recording. Nobody knows what they're going to do.
@TheShockMaster Actually now we do, they are going to have an option for both. And now it's been rumored they're going to delay it again to include 3's original voices as well.
Yeah, I heard about that I'm very glad that we have both. Now we have the option of reliving the classic experience we grew up with, or putting a new spin on the experience we grew up with. I'm very glad that we don't necessarily have to go with one or the other.
@TheShockMaster I am too. :) And exactly! Though I would have been fine with only having the old voices, but as long as we get an option for them too then I don't mind the new ones. I'll be curious to hear them and do like some of what I've heard so far, actually.
Oh! Someone told me of a possible reason for the rerecording that I never thought of before: Since it's an HD Collection, the sound is supposed to be 5.1 surround sound (or whatever the latest audio is), and it's..
@TheShockMaster difficult (if not impossible) to upgrade the original performances to that which is why rerecording was necessary. That makes a lot of sense and is probably the reason for it (or at least one of them), and makes me not mind it as much now. Though, I still wish they would've just recasted those necessary and just had the original cast they could get a hold of it to rerecord their lines and have a new voice director to get better performances out of them. :P
Her voice actor, Monica Horgan, cried after reading this letter. I can see why, this letter is so full of emotion and sadness. I'd like to see games like Halo and Call of Duty reach this level of complexity and depth with their stories.
@Slide2671 What amazes me is when ppl get overly emotional and start randomly picking game genre and compare how "that game" couldn't reach the same level as "this game". Dude, halo, CoD are FPS ACTION-SCI-FI genre. How the hell can one make those games emotional? But if you read the books of Halo, u get to feel how master chief feels. WHICH is left out of the game. But then again, they are just fps.
@mindsoulbody First of all, are you saying that sci-fi action can't have an emotional story? If so, you have a lot to learn of that genre.
Secondly, I've met a lot of CoD and Halo Reach fanboys and just regular gamers who love the stupid stories and endlessly pick over the complexity of Soap and Masterchief. I've read the books and I still think Masterchief is retarded. He's got the personality of a wad of bubblegum and cannot compare to this game.
@Slide2671 ans. to your 1st question: NO. I think it CAN have emo. story. 2nd: my point was that regular FPS games simple don't focus too much on the story since it's all about "aim-kill, move on" tactics. I also mentioned that the books for halo are good. Trying to put those books' in-depth story in halo series would make the game at least 5 times longer. Most fps fans don't like that. That was the only point I was making.
@mindsoulbody I suppose that it's not the game's fault for having a bad story (I think the shooter genre is over for a good time), it's just the game critic's and fanboy's fault for obsessing over them.
And like I said, I have read the Halo books. They're well-written, but they don't add much to the character of Master-Chief.
@Slide2671 They don't need to add more to MC. Thing is, the books are sci-fi and deals w/ the struggle of humans against a threat. Same idea w/ StarCraft books too, but a bit more detailed. If you really want a good story, books are the only way to go.
Books will stay best storytellers as you can take it at your own pace and imagine it yourself, but if you want a straight thing, go for Silent Hill 2 :p
@TheBravethunder well, that's where a visual media such as games and a visual media such as a book differs. And guess what, game that goes w/ books or vice versa, is a sure way to get the best experience out of anything. Assuming that the person has the patience to read books...since now a days, very few actually appreciate what books are all about.
Absolutely. It's utterly heart wrenching. It made me even sadder, because I got the In Water ending. Mary is practically begging him to move on, and he simply...doesn't.
Look at the sadness in james' face in the credits. The amount you can get from someones personality in just one look is incredible. The letter and the way it was read was incredible,it was almost like a poem and the foggy graveyard is just such a traditional looking silent hill image.Absolute Art!!!
Hey! Guess what, yuki8kawaii? they are going to make a second movie. But i read a rumor (Just a rumor so far) That it's going to be a group of people going into silent hill... A GROUP! That's so ridiculous. Then i read another rumor that it was going to be about Chris DaSilva searching silent hill for Rose and Sharon. Of course this one isn't going to be directed by Christophe Gans...
@The2012girl I'd be interested to see another film; to see where they'd go with it. The first one wasn't bad, but you're taking a huge step when you make a game into a movie. I keep hearing tumours that the second film is supposed to be out this year. :\
@LoveIrelandPride Well, the info I've gotten lately is from Wikipedia and imdb. You can read about the sequel on Wikipedia if you haven't already. And every other site states that it will most likely come out in 2011.
This scene gets me every time (so I make sure my roommates are nowhere near me). It's the most gripping depiction of someone understanding and coming to peace with their guilt. The part at 0:38 where he claims to have wanted to "end her suffering", and then quickly withdraws his lie is such a subtle and powerful point for me. Also, in the suicide ending, he says "that's not the whole truth" instead, meaning he hasn't fully come to peace with it, which I also thought was a nice subtle point.
This game is truly a classic and a beatiful storyline to go with such an incredible story line through the truth being revealed to James Sutherland as he finds out about the truth of Mary and sees what he must see in order to see the truth itself through Mary. Incredible game and will go down as a classic and I love this game along with 1 and 3. These 3 games are the masterpiece of the series. The rest are okay but nowhere the level these games are on.
The saddest part is at 6:38, her voice just has so much pain and sadness in it that its unbearable. Everytime I hear it I just start tearing up, and I'm a grown ass man lol. This shows that no matter how good a games graphics are, its the story that makes it truly great.
You are right man, but... its just a game and that is an acted voice. I got no problem with getting on game story to feel it (i do everytime i can) but knowing what is reality and what is not.
@Assbot3000, I agree completely. I'm all about a nice first person shooter, but games with solid stories always win out in my opinion. This is probably one of my favorite games of all time and I can say I am truly glad I had the opportunity to play though it.
Easily my favorite video game ending. Such genius, who could've predicted that the letter he imagined was based on this one. I don't like to think James killed himself after everything he learned/remembered in this game.
Yeah, I agree. I really don't think James killed himself, either. Every time I say that, though, someone says, "Well, in Silent Hill 4, it said that he was never heard from again, so he must have killed himself." I don't agree with that, either. It could be that he just wanted to start a whole new life (and with Laura), and left his "old world" behind. A fanfic I read that used this as the ending also pointed out that he would have to run away anyway to avoid being arrested by the police.
if you've seen the pic of mary with the disease, it makes this ending all the more powerful. it is pretty brutal how she looks, but its just a testament to how powerful this game really is.
Although this game is obviously dated...it is still one of the most beautiful games I have ever played in my life. This ending clearly supports everybody who also thinks this as well.
There isn't any complete original soundtrack. The CST (complete soundtrack) is the music ripped from the game by someone (John Anthony Mathewson in this case). And it's unofficial.
Sometimes OSTs (original soundtracks) have all tunes that are in the film/game, but not in SH's case.
Well, you're wrong when you're saying "all". SH2 is ambiguous. F.ex. I consider Maria as a tragic heroine (IMO the most tragic from all) and pity her - BFAW shows that she's a feeling and thinking being. In Maria Ending she at least has a chance to live happily. Because IMO Maria has a bigger chance to be happy with James in ME, than Laura in LE - if he indeed adopt her (no one said he will). To obtain ME you must be caring and protective - for LE you must be just selfish.
This cause is more complicated. One can say that Maria is not real or is just an illusion/manifestation, but it's a simplification. Certain facts are, that she is an aware and feeling being, that was created in unnatural way. Just like Lisa in SH1 or Heather in SH1/3. They also were created supernaturally, but have ability to feel like normal human. So there's no reason to treat them worse than "real" people. Also it's not certain how Maria will function if she leaves SH.
I meant Lisa from SH1 (that being that Harry met). She isn't that "real" Lisa, that Travis met in Origins. She is her reincarnation/manifestation/creation/trapped soul/memory/whatever you call it (a being created and imprisoned in somebody's otherworld; here: Alessa's).
But I'm just trying to look more deeply and compare apparitions from the whole series. In SH nothing is obvious or certain. That's why I love it so much :)
Well, when you think of Maria as a person, yes it is better to be caring and protective. BUt if she is just a figment of James's imagination he created to torture himself, then caring and protecting it is just a sign of his falling out of touch with reality and embracing his own self-guilt.
This was the first ending I ever got. I love the song from this. Thank you so much for providing the MP3 on your side. My player is almost entirely filled with these songs. Simply beautiful, I cannot express my gratitude to you in words for supplying them.
The first time I finished the game I had this feeling that was hard to describe. I was definitely depressed, but I felt more than that. I'm not sure. It was more like being devoid of emotion. :/

SHORT VERSION: DEVOTE YOUR LIFE TO MARIA
LONG VERSION:
-Don't look at Mary's picture or letter ever.
-Take a long time to get to the hospital (after you meet Maria) and spend as much time with Maria as possible.
-When you leave Maria in the hospital room, go check up on her often.
-Make sure Maria takes as little damage as possible (2-3 hits from Pyramid Head's spear is okay but avoid it if possible).
-In the hallway before the Final Boss, go through the other end before the flashback is done.

James:The truth is..I hated you! I want you to out of the way....I wanted my life back...
Mary:James...if that was true, then why you look so sad..?
Mary: James...please do something for me.....go on with your life....
That's so tearful and beautiful~Mary is a treasure to James....Her selfless and love to him...

Perhaps the best horror/thriller story ever, and not for a computer game only...

Although this game is obviously dated...it is still one of the most beautiful games I have ever played in my life. This ending clearly supports everybody who also thinks this as well.

what,s the name of the song in this ending???????????
liquidsnakesam 2 years ago
When Mary and James are talking - "Making Peace" (it's absent on OST however).
During the credits - "Overdose Delusion".
I know SH 1 - 4 soundtracks by heart :)

cool man thanks!!!!

actualy it is on the complete OST version.
cepomwa 2 years ago
There isn't any complete original soundtrack. The CST (complete soundtrack) is the music ripped from the game by someone (John Anthony Mathewson in this case). And it's unofficial.
Sometimes OSTs (original soundtracks) have all tunes that are in the film/game, but not in SH's case.

same here. Her voice while reading the letter was just amazing. Probably the best in the silent hill series.

This is the ending we all hope James came to in the end of his journey...but I fear he was be unable to achieve it. I can still hope though.

Maria is not real
Luisdenuevo 2 years ago
This cause is more complicated. One can say that Maria is not real or is just an illusion/manifestation, but it's a simplification. Certain facts are, that she is an aware and feeling being, that was created in unnatural way. Just like Lisa in SH1 or Heather in SH1/3. They also were created supernaturally, but have ability to feel like normal human. So there's no reason to treat them worse than "real" people. Also it's not certain how Maria will function if she leaves SH.
BimberMistrz 2 years ago
Well that's explain everything!
Luisdenuevo 2 years ago
Lisa WAS real. Silent Hil: Origins confirmed that.
johnsavage1234 2 years ago
I meant Lisa from SH1 (that being that Harry met). She isn't that "real" Lisa, that Travis met in Origins. She is her reincarnation/manifestation/creation/trapped soul/memory/whatever you call it (a being created and imprisoned in somebody's otherworld; here: Alessa's).
But I'm just trying to look more deeply and compare apparitions from the whole series. In SH nothing is obvious or certain. That's why I love it so much :)
BimberMistrz 2 years ago
Well, when you think of Maria as a person, yes it is better to be caring and protective. BUt if she is just a figment of James's imagination he created to torture himself, then caring and protecting it is just a sign of his falling out of touch with reality and embracing his own self-guilt.

This was the first ending I ever got. I love the song from this. Thank you so much for providing the MP3 on your side. My player is almost entirely filled with these songs. Simply beautiful, I cannot express my gratitude to you in words for supplying them.
