Without a Geomagnetic Field any "terraforming mars" is just blowing smoke. There are a lot of scientists out there who are opposed to human missions and settlements beyond our solar system. There are mining ops, a lot more rare earth elements on the moon and the asteroids then Earth! There is also the work done by the late Dr. O'Neill---Space Settlements at the "L-5" points around Earth. and other locations in the solar system. MINE THE MOON!

I sure wish I could get a "straight answer" from those "scientists" who claim they can "Terraform Mars" but never answer(s) the 64 BILLION Dollar question since Mars does not have a magnetic field all the ideas about producing a "breathable atmosphere" is just "hot air"! @Polydynamix OntDinRS is right on his count. Other countries have much more stringent guidelines for knowledge than we have. Their is so much competition for so few jobs that only the best & brightest get them. I work with someone who at university in her country was working parttime for a design company, they wanted her to be a model & she said no - education is more important. I personally think education should be free to all who want to learn. College attend. not necessary.

If he was from japan, that'd make him smarter. They're much stricter and push themselves to do better.

But it wouldn't make much difference race wise, the Asians are on average 5 I.Q. points smarter than white people, 9 I.Q. smarter on average than black people.

This was tested by testing 100 21 year old university students of different colours, all from the same town.

All these obstacles to terraforming mars are just engineering problems. Who's to say that in 50, 100, 200 years we won't have a mastery over planetary climates? This James Kasting character is very pessimistic and a bit near-sighted when it comes to terraforming mars. He bases everything on our current technology, even as capitalism and the profit system are the most obvious things holding technology back. Once capitalism is replaced, we can assume that our level of technology will explode.

Logically the further you move away from the sun the more Green house gas you would need to stabilize an atmosphere...... Seing that CO2 assists in warming our atmosphere though there is less than 1 percent of it as well as water vapor which is inconsistent. Now say you use hydrofluorocarbon's in bulk which is 1,200 times more potent than C02 and ozone friendly.... We have options. Optimism is livelyhood and aids for positive steps forward. Sounds like NASA landing on the moon

Terraforming Mars is a bad idea because Mars still doesn't have a dynamo to make a magnetic field to deflect the sun's radiation.

@uriel30 In fact it is indeed possible to terraform mars and sustain a thick atmoshpere regardless of the lack of a strong global magnetic field. Saturns moon Titan, for instance is smaller than Mars with lower gravity(comparable to the moon's) and no measurable magnetic field...Yet it houses an atmosphere 50 percent thicker than ours.... Venus has no magnetic field either and just look what it has....

@uriel30 Right on! Been saying this for yrs and it just seems to go into a person's ear and out the other and never get a comment about the fact that without a geomagnetic field any proto-atmosphere would be ripped apart by the sun's solar wind and its CMEs! There is another problem as well!
