This makes me so sad that people are have no compassion for inmates, how hard it must be to have no physical contact for comfort . I would be scared to do it , but I would like to see people who can, be on their side, go in there and support them.

Secondly, our prison system is dysfunctional. In Norway when they lock people up, they have them work on big project things together and teach them how to get along with other people. They have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

@sk8tafrnk I think the biggest issue here, is that in places like Norway the criminal justice system has a real focus on stemming the recidivism of criminal offenders through rehabilitation. Whereas, in the U.S. they try to rehabilitate through revenge/punishment and using their revenge/punishment system to deter recidivism... Problem with that is, is that pretty much every anthropologist and sociologist on the planet have been saying it doesn't work for, oh, forty years or so.

Occupy is in its infancy. Civil Rights took 10 years, Spanish Revolution was 50 years in the making. Large social change takes a long time, but the only way it's happened is movements just like Occupy, believe it or not. There's lots of books on this.
If you read books by Noam Chomsky, he'll lead you to a lot of sources in history you'd never be able to find if you didn't know they were there. I would recommend reading "Understanding Power- The Indispensable Chomsky."
It's a collection of his spoken lectures in a book. It's discussions with him and an audience, and he talks about a lot of things including movements. He gives lots of examples and everything is well sourced.

As a non-violent offender that spent 3 years in the IDOC I know. I was 17 when I went to prison and acted like a fucking kid and spent an received an extra 6 months for back talking a C/O. One year of my sentence was spent in segregation because I violated rules. what if your car was one of the 30 stole?

There are a lot of people in prison who didn't do the crimes they were convicted of. There are people in there who had minor psychotic episodes, or who committed acts of self-defence, were set up, etc.

@sk8tafrnk I think the biggest issue here, is that in places like Norway the criminal justice system has a real focus on stemming the recidivism of criminal offenders through rehabilitation. Whereas, in the U.S. they try to rehabilitate through revenge/punishment and using their revenge/punishment system to deter recidivism... Problem with that is, is that pretty much every anthropologist and sociologist on the planet have been saying it doesn't work for, oh, forty years or so.

Occupy is in its infancy. Civil Rights took 10 years, Spanish Revolution was 50 years in the making. Large social change takes a long time, but the only way it's happened is movements just like Occupy, believe it or not. There's lots of books on this.

It's a collection of his spoken lectures in a book. It's discussions with him and an audience, and he talks about a lot of things including movements. He gives lots of examples and everything is well sourced.

As a non-violent offender that spent 3 years in the IDOC I know. I was 17 when I went to prison and acted like a fucking kid and spent an received an extra 6 months for back talking a C/O. One year of my sentence was spent in segregation because I violated rules. what if your car was one of the 30 stole?

There are a lot of people in prison who didn't do the crimes they were convicted of. There are people in there who had minor psychotic episodes, or who committed acts of self-defence, were set up, etc.

There are hundreds of recorded cases of wrongful imprisonment.
Sometimes it's because someone fits a suspect's description and was in the vicinity at the time of the crime.
Police have been known to coerce 'confessions' out of innocent people, time and time again, because they were *that* convinced they had the right person.
There are innocent, law-abiding people in prison; collateral of an imperfect justice system.
