In 1948, Armour Institute merged with Lewis to form Illinois Institute of Technology, and also absorbed Moholy's Institute of Design. Mies was head of Architecture at IIT until 1958.
Fascinating, but his facts are a mess. Gropius didn't "break away," he was appointed to head a merger of the Grand Ducal Academy of Art and the School of Arts & Crafts, = Bauhaus. Not all Bauhaus design is geometric. The New Bauhaus (1937) in Chicago was headed by Moholy, recommended by Gropius, who had a position at Harvard. Failed in 1 yr., it re-opened as The School of Design, '39. Gropi & Mies were not part of the New Bauhaus. Mies joined the arch. faculty of Armour Inst. of Tech. in '38.
... sorry, the men tell some silly things ... bauhaus never die until today ... see your lokal ikea-catolouge! ... and bauhaus dont die in the 33-45 part ... they carry on in west-germany and also in east-germany after the war ... and bauhaus is still alive.
i disagree. post moderns removed abstraction from design and focussed purely on structural aspects. take for example council tower blocks.
modernism wasnt soulless, it was the future. it wasnt purely soulless until the post moderns removed most things great about modernism.
pioneer moderns did not ignore the past, they took the successful aspects from movements such as arts & crafts, and art nouveau and developed them further.
thanks to Bauhaus and other pioneers such as Le Corbusier
Bauhaus is uncanny. You have to look all around. And when you look up or down its somewhat the same, but not quite.

Post modernism is based on embracing the traditional with modernism.
Frank Lloyd Wright knew this. Modernism was soulless, like a machine, and lacked iconic distinction.
Modernism also tried to dismiss the past and create a new.......all it did was ignore the past and make dull designs.
