  • 4:40 leave your baby at home, woman.

  • @inzxane : That baby is a prop on this lecture. It is supposed to be there.

  • I try to research both sides of the argument without getting my self esteem broken by mockeries of my world view and to not be pulled into a supposed comfort of sarcasm and Satire, but I find myself doubting sometimes and I think why am I beginning to doubt? I think about this and I come to the conclusion it's atheists and I ask myself what about them? And the answer is that I was beginning to become selfish and was getting pulled in by humor and put down by insults. I go through a list of the

  • @TheyAreHere2 If you research both sides of the argument then you will see that creationists simply present straw man arguments. They are also prepared to blatantly lie in order ton dupe gullible people. Evolutionary theory is now the corner stone of modern biology, it is our royal road to conquering horrendous diseases that have afflicted mankind. For creationists to reject evolutionary theory because they have a psychological yearning for bible to be correct is a crime against humanity.

  • The key to investigate whether a divine Creator truly exists and in what context and form is in the investigation of the paranormal. Does a separate state of existence exist? Is our conciousness separate from our body? Do we continue to exist after the physical body dies? These are the avenues to explore and Prof. Dawkins should investigate these phenomena in my view.

Many scientists take this subject seriously and nothing should be left to chance. That is what science is all about.

  • @maxiboy666 Scientists do take the subject seriously but they have found no evidence for a supernatural creator. However we can ask some simple logical questions. Why would a supernatural creator make the universe in such a way? Why is he evil and sadistic. Why bother giving us an earthly life?! Why did he need to create us? Where is the big theme parks heaven and hell where we are supposedly to go to when we die? Why make a planet that is dangerous to live on e.g. volcanoes, tsunamis etc?

  • @maxiboy666 So chance exists? Or does it not? Nice label.

  • @maxiboy666 Science is the study of the natural world. It cannot deal with claims of the supernatural. The scientific method requires that the thing it is studying is falsifiable with the scientific method. The supernatural is not falsifiable. If you were to claim unicorns exist, a scientists would ask were to find them to srudy them. You would say: ' I forgot to mention, they're invisible". Then the scientist would say "uhm, ok... we'll try to see its heat signature then" ....

  • @byteresistor (cont)... then you would say "oh but they don't emit heat"...and so on...ad infinitum, until there's no scientific process that can be used to observe this phenomenom. Whenever a scientist would try to do an experiment on the supernatural, a believer in supernatural could just change the rules as they see fit.

  • Michael Faraday was indeed a brilliant scientist and I believe he would have taken a personal dislike to the arrogant and self-opinionated Richard Dawkins.

  • @maxiboy666 Dawkins argues out intellect and backs his arguments up with evidence. Religious people are psychologically fucked up and therefore need to believe in fairy tales passed on to them by their parents or culture.

  • @DrMontague Be that as it may but the greatest mind of the 20 century, Einstein also erred on the side of a Creative divine force or Creator because of a definitive pattern in the known Universe. Was he fucked up in the mind?

Don't misunderstand me, I am an agnostic. But I like to look at both arguments and the evidence. If definitive proof existed either way then I would accept that. Dawkins just rejects the existence of a God outright and that is just plain illogical thinking in my view.

  • @maxibo You obviously don't understand Einstein's god which is Spinoza's god which is nature. In other words Einstein saw nature as god Nature means natural not supernatural. Einstein did not believe in god who answered prayers or created the universe. Einstein used the term god and nature interchangeably. Einstein is not considered the greatest physicist of the all time. Other physicists voted . Paul Dirac as the 2nd best physicist of all time Newton being the best. Durac was an Atheist

  • GAY POWER

  • that baby must be about 20 now. interesting.

  • @beatlegreg07 i know the baby.

  • @hgchjk Quite apt to have her there too don't ya think ;)

  • these videos is a treasure! :))))

  • The first 3 mins are a waste of time. Dawkins come on at 3:29

  • Haha, thanks. That was useful.

  • I wish everyone would post comments like that, as a form of advice, to stop us wasting time !

  • @ZachClooney A 3 minute introduction gives a brief history lesson of history of Xmas lectures, the importance of science, who Dr Richard Dawkins and what he is going to be lecturing about, and that there is also a competition for those who want to enter. All important at the time. Dawkins now holds the copy right to theses lectures, they are on youtube, and guess what? he has left the introduction in. It sounds to me as if it you whose a waste of time.

  • Actually the whole 8:39 is a waste of time.

  • @virtualguitarist Explain why?

  • You can lead a man to knowledge but you can't make him think.

  • @virtualguitarist : Let me quess, you are a creatard?

  • yep, i skipped the first half at like 20 seconds

  • Or when something is said in a specific context and one decides to ignore the context, not bother to check if it is in reply to another comment, assume whatever they like and take action on it.

  • Youtube does at times put comments in wrong places, if you visit the forums you will see for yourself that people are complaining about this. Not much I can do about that but I do apologize when I have been mistaken and will unblock a particular commentator. But for most of the time I'm dealing with creationist fuckwits and those who have come over as a creationist fuckwits

  • "Take your son, your only son yes, Isaac, whom you love so much and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will point out to you." (Genesis 22:1-18)

  • I hope to God you arent a real doctor.

  • I hope that you are just pretending to be a deluded fuckwit! There are many different types of doctors, fuckwit like you assumes all doctors are doctors of medicine.

  • its warms my heart to know that you delete comments of people that contain a higher intellect then your self.

  • My intellect is reasonably high, certainly not Einstein but certainly miles above the lying creationist scumbags fuckwits. It warms my heart that I have the power to block lying deluded fuckwits like you.

  • And also people whom you misunderstood.

  • You mean those people who are piss poor at communicating and who would fail a simple communications test for a job in a call centre! Yep

  • Why is it always spoiled brats and people that have lived privileged lives that dont believe in God?

  • Not true. Many impoverished people have asked why the big cunt in the sky is blind, deaf , dumb, invisible, and only looks only after the stinking rich.

  • will people always bring babies into places that they dont belong ? shit man..Get these women out the cinemas and lectuer halls lol

  • @mrcitydocs That baby is a prop in the lecture. He is supposed to be there.

  • oh my god what a boring introduction. there needs to be explosions and scantily cladded women to hold peoples attention until the master, Richard Dawkins, takes the stage. Go Rich!

  • I think it was it Lord Salisbury who said of people like you, don't give them free education simply give them what they want, a fucking circus!

  • ברוך אתה ה' אלוהינו מלך העולם שלא עשני כלב ליובאוויטשער

  • How does a cat playing a keyboard get 10 times more views than this? That must say something about our current de-evolution.

  • according to atheists society is embracing secularism ....so yeah you are right....society is devolving.

  • or becoming enlightened!

  • @societyofsin : You think superstition is important? Why is it important to believe in lies with no evidence?

  • haha I love the cutsey background; it looks like he's on the set of a childrens TV show. Canadians might be reminded of Fred Penner. But seriously, who takes a baby to a science lecture?

  • Dawkins picks the baby up after a few minutes and uses it explains about science and evolution. Its' only in the lecture for a few minutes.

  • @DrMontague The the baby is brought into the lobby, and given to RELIGIOUS groups to fight over, for a SACRIFICE... Sound familiar?

  • Yep. The Christians believed Jews ate babies.

  • someone who couldnt find a babysitter and cares about science haha

  • We start them young over here.

  • er... intelligent comments???

  • Throw that baby down pit or well like the romans did...and they called the germans barbarians??...thats where the name came from...the romans were the barbaric fucks...

  • actually barbarian comes from Greek, whereas we say blah blah blah, Greeks characterised outsiders as saying bar bar bar.

  • Anger management?

  • He keeps looking at that baby like he wants to punch it in the face lol!

  • lol Dr. I just now found lecture one XD im gonna go ahead and subscribe to you. Just promise to keep giving scientific videos :P

  • Brilliant lectures. If I ever have children, I will show them this lecture series; it's entertaining and elevating.

  • Be smarter than that baby's parents and wait until it can shut up for an hour to listen, please.

  • i wanna kill that baby

  • It's probably big enough by now to kill you!

  • It sounds as if the baby was big enough by then lol.

  • Fuck sake another religious nut. God must have known that one of angels would turn into the devil because he would know the future. Therefore the dozey bastard must have a screw loose.

  • I guess you can ask your GOD to give you some intelligence. You hypocrite piece of shit. You use SCIENCE everyday, and you are typing in front of a computer. GOD HAS NOTHIHNG TO DO with all these inventions you piece of crap. Fuck you and fuck your GOD!

  • Christmas lecture to exploit Christianity and religion... LMAO

  • If you want to get technical, its the winter solstice. An ancient "holiday" celebrated by almost every early race.

  • Absolutely true.

  • Christmas trees have their origin in paganism.

    As does the Easter bunny.

  • Im finnish. Most people here are well aware of the fact that christmas ect. are old pagan festivals.

  • correct good sir. I love it when bible bashers say We want our christmas trees, its ours bla bla, Its werid that there old testament scriptures condem the pragan practices of the nations yet they indulge in them at will.

  • You mean bible thumpers... We sir are the bible bashers...

  • Your superstitions are dangerous. Grow up.

  • That baby was probably the same age as me in 1991, I was born in 1990. :)

  • This is great! Thanks for the upload!!!

  • 1991 great year.. Nevermind

  • Nirvana?

  • yes haha

  • 6:35, I can't imagine how angry he must be at that mother there.

  • Watch the whole vid and you will see that the baby is used by Dawkins to explin growing up in the universe.

  • Oh, well I guess he spoke before his cue. :p

  • The style of the guy on the left at 1.57.

  • LOLz I looked like that when I was little, I wuz so cool

  • This kind of video, especially with the beautiful details of science masterfully explained, fill me with more awe than any religon ever did. Dawkins rules.

  • Yes I feel the same way about him. Dawkins is very good at expressing the beauty of the universe as it actually is. Sagan had the same gift.

    dboy

  • davidmabus99. It blatantly obvious that you are another inbred imbecile from from the polygamous sect 'Yearning For Zion' Ranch that has been in the news recently. The person you think is your mother is probably your sister who was raped by her brother.

  • ha i love the 90s! LMAO

  • Who brings a baby to a lecture?

  • A single parent maybe?

  • watch the video in its entirety before you talk next time, that baby was there for a specific reason.

  • i caught this on tv at the time and it`s what got me hooked onto watching xmas lectures every year and aware of dawkins and his work.

    glad to find it here.

  • The wonder in some of the younger childrens eyes during these lectures reminds me of the padawans and yoda... they have this look of great intrigue and wonder. It seems like their minds are being expanded, especially when i contrast it to the looks of boredom and exhaust i see in children at churches ive attended.

  • Heh wonderful observation.

    dboy

  • Thank you for posting this. I missed it when it was first shown, because I wasn't born then! LOL. Is it available on DVD?

  • Yes it is visit Dawkind Official website, or Amazon. In fact you can view them for free at his website.

  • For the first time in billions of years a living thing realises the reason of its existence...

  • This its a very exciting time to be living in.

  • Richard Dawkins is a great scientist. These lectures are very interesting and moving.

  • Dawkins is aware that there are plenty of dick heads around. However these dick heads don't have as much authority over things as Dawkins tends to imply. They are not in control. Reputable/Accredited Universities will not ban the research and teaching of evolutionary theory from their curriculum

  • Just look at the woman with the baby she has to spend all her time comforting and looking at it that she cant even look at let alone listen to Dawkins. How can she not be aware that she is being such a pain.

  • For fuck sake watch the whole lecture. The baby is picked up by Dawkins early on in the lecture in order to introduce evolution. The woman was asked to sit in the front row of the audience with her baby as they are to be part of the lecture. They are only there for a few minutes then they leave.

  • They could have called her and the baby in at a later stage ie when required, it disrupted the first part of the lecture.

  • I suppose they could have but that wasn't her fault she only did as they asked. They do have rehearsals so they must of thought it ok. But how do you predict a baby's behaviour? I'm only saying blame Dawkins et al not the mother and baby.

  • well as you stated in another comment of yours babies are screaming bags of piss and shit. Anyway thanks for posting up the lectures, I am really enjoying them

  • how could that stupid woman bring a baby to a lecture- such disregard for everyone else given that it takes a lot of concentration to listen to a science lecture- I would have told her to get lost.

  • @Polaphuca That baby is a prop on the lecture. It is supposed to be there.

  • that damn baby spoiled the the whole thing, throw it in the river

  • The integrated complexity and beauty of life, nature and the universe often leaves me wondering if an intelligence is behind it all. However I don't believe the Holy Bible to be the true inspired word of the creator. I just find it too mythical to be taken seriously. If our creator were to leave behind a record, I would expect it to obey the laws of nature rather than relying on the supernatural.

  • If you believe in a creator you are relying on the supernatural.

  • An intelligence could be behind this... why not? Could be an alien species, could be an unconscious being, who knows. I'm not subscribing to after-life or anything, just the prospect of intelligent creation. Big deal, do you think in a few hundred years of science you've got the whole bead on things?

  • An alien species would not be supernatural but simply another life form which would have evolved. Non of the ancient texts remotely correspond to sciences discovery of the big bang or evolutionary theory. The ancient texts got it wrong. Therefore all the creation stories are nothing but the figment of the human imagination as are the god/s.

  • You would need an intelligence to create an intelligence to create an intelligence and so on.A creator would need a creator.A big blue rabbit could have created the universe why not? BTW you are right science is still young but has gave us a more accurate knowledge of our place in the universe. We still have a lot to learn. If you don't like the idea of scientific endeavour simply say that a supernatural being made everything happen.

  • I can't deny my own feelings when I walk around in the world I live in. I'm not saying, a creator did it and lets leave it at that, I'm just saying that there COULD be an intellect, or perhaps many intellects to be more precise. Either way, I'm not subscribing to any archaic text as none to my knowledge gives an accurate description of the world. I'm totally on the side of science and the unknown.

  • babies are like small prople but more cuddlie

  • Ok. Next time I have a wet fart I'll give you the pleasure of wiping my arse! : )

  • fucking babies

  • Richard Dawkins* even

  • Friday nights! I wouldn't mind a beautiful female and myself learning all about human biology. Only in the name of scientific research of course!

  • lmao

  • A hot cup off coffee, a slice off toast and a Tichard Dawkins lecture...How else should a seventeen year old spend his Friday nights? -.-

  • lol, training for a religious jihad?

or plotting the downfall of society?

or with a beer and some peanuts dancing with beautiful girls

    hmmmmm I'm not sure

  • HA HA - it actually doesn't get any better.

  • Thank you for posting this! :)

  • thank you for including the 'c'

  • Well done and thanx for puttin this up, i shall be watching all parts as soon as i can

  • rather odd that someone would see it as a good idea to bring a baby to a lecture.... but then again some people also think it good to bring babies to tennis matches too. Some people have no common sense.

    Good lecture though.

  • The baby is only there for a short time. Dawkins uses the baby to explain evolution and the importance of scientific endeavour.

  • Ah, then I apologise. I had not watched the video all the way through, I had an appointment to get to. But I'll be sure to watch it now.

  • If the baby is part of the demonstration why not keep it backstage it's very distracting to the presentation of the lecture, in all honesty

  • It's strange to see him with brown hair. He doesn't look quite as scholarly, doesn't have that sort of grandfatherly professor appearance I'm used to. Other than that he's the same ole Dawkins.

To everyone who Has absolute faith in anything and doubts the theory of evolution:

"The way to see by Faith is to shut the Eye of Reason."

    Benjamin Franklin

  • the only thing worth watching at christmas! lol

  • Lose the damned baby already ! :o)

  • Just what I was thinking, but not as politely

  • Doubting Thomas was hounored by Jesus for asking for proof. The end.

What is the point of blind faith. If we trust blindly then we may end up believing anything. Blind faith is dangerous... just look at all the cults around. If we are to trust blind faith then the only mitigating factor in your religion is your place of birth (for the vast majority of cases). Therefore it is IN WISDOM that we should question... Jesus suposedly confirmed this with Thomas.

  • If there was ever such a man as Doubting Thomas then he was the most sensible man amongst the disciples. He's probably related to Richard Dawkins.

  • BTW don't doubt that there are fairies at the bottom of the garden. They are real, please have faith and believe what I tell you.

  • Oh yes I know. I'm atheist. I was just ripping into the idea of blind faith. It was Pauls idea not Jesus'.

  • everDieAgain79. Bollocks. We should always question thing, this is why science doesn't stagnate.

  • If we call for the proof and we question the answers

    Only the doubt will grow

Are we blind to the truth or a sign to believe in?

    Only the wise will know

And word by word they handed down the light that shines today

And those who came at first to scoff, remained behind to pray

    --Alan Parsons Project, "Ammonia Avenue"

  • To NeverDieAgain79. Bollocks. We should always question things. This the very reason science does not stagnate.

  • Theistic withdrawals are hell. I'm questioning myself worse than anything else (even God), and my self-doubt is growing by the day. I don't know if I should classify myself as a Christian or as an Agnostic. Then again, I am an Agnostic by default, since I don't know what to believe.

  • NeverDieAgain79. Bollocks. We should always question thing, this is why science doesn't stagnate.

  • This man is so hot. Even now.

    Go Dawkins!

  • I know well let's not go further...

  • his clothes are weird

  • At 4:45 he smiles at the child.

  • Kill that F***ing kid.

  • The baby has deliberately been placed in the audience because Dawkins need to pick the baby up later in the lecture in order to explain human development. He is not annoyed or distracted by it.

  • blah blah blah. 3 minutes 30 before we meet dawkins!

  • It gives a 3 minutes 30 insight into how and why the lectures came about.

  • Who brings a baby to something like this?

  • I love how the baby crying slightly pisses Dawkins off.

  • LoL...good one golfmontpoker :)

  • he only smiles and acknowledges there is a child there

  • The baby has deliberately been placed in the audience because Dawkins need to pick the baby up later in the lecture in order to explain human development. He is not annoyed or distracted by it.

  • thats what i said

  • Well I am! Gah I hate babies! :(

Great videos though, thanks for uploading!

  • Remember you have people off camera who instruct the audience what to do. Why do Americans laugh at things that aren't at all funny? Are they told to laugh? BTW I'm only jesting.

  • GREAT lecture. Easily understood. Thanks Richard.

  • Lol, and I thought I was being overly hostile.

  • And besides, you end in the future, not the past.
