  • @gregboyds although i understand where youre comming from, but please read what i said, and think about it not saying if youre use of hard power is right or wrong, just saying that it damages youre reputation in the international stage, and thats true. If we visit another country, european people are generally better accepted than american

  • very interesting video.. nice interview...

  • Nice video

  • obamas election seems superficial the way nye keeps talking about it like they just put him in presidency to save face or something

  • I can't hear Prof. Nye talk about "Soft Power" without feeling like it's an attempt to over-dramatize a very simple point. He might actually look better if I could see him in a tougher interview.

Soft power is very nebulous, with no guarantee it's there when needed. Sometimes it can run close to appeasement. You might say Chamberlain was pursuing Soft Power with Germany in 1937. (Stalin clearly was.) So how does Prof. Nye propose measuring concrete concessions against a "soft" benefit?

  • Soft power will preserve USA, if anything can. :)

Hard power is not power, killing another human in a war is less meaningless as chopping down a tree, except the entire world is watching you do it and condemning it.

  • Soft power increases the potential for more power, leading to the increase of hard power, which will be used once it becomes a favourable option to do so. So soft power is power after all, nothing less sinister than hard power, but simply more deceptive

  • soft power of America will be back, if strategy of USA in Central Asia and South Asia with her economic tools not military tools..

  • China is using soft power all over the world-with increasingly positive results. It is especially effective just now in Southeast Asia.

  • Well its not the only reason USA is going out of the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. But one of them. Go Obama!:D

  • Soft Power is getting more central in International Policy, because countrys and organizations are afraid of getting a bad repute from others. And If they dont follow the right values they may not be given more aid from others. And because of the growth of multilateral agreements all over.

If they are known of helping people that dosent have good values, as democracy and humanrights, they may also have a bad reputeation. Modern wars are expensive to lead, thats why USA is going out of them!

  • Soft Power has been around for a long before Joseph Nye was born.... Soft power is a about creating the appearence of freedom when in all reality there is none you are being guided along, that has been the definitition of America probably since or even before it's creation. Obama is just the salesman not the policy maker Soft power wont win in the middle east thats exactly what they are fighting against with infiltration of culture, Joseph Nye comes of as a soft power facist to me
  • If Soft power is completely failing in the Middle East then how do you explain the recent move for democracy in Iran or indeed the increasing demand for it in Egypt?

  • @buster27 Yes! Finally someone who knows what's going on.

  • very interesting we need more internatonal relations videos on youtube!

  • I am inspired by Joseph Nye

  • we need subtitle plz

  • Barack Obama is effectively using soft power to reinvent America or may be improve world public opinion
