@punk3d2 Probably, especially if you're having to swap as it stands. It's possible that the gains would be trivial, but it really depends on the size of the work and your current setup. Also, importing would almost always be better with a solid state drive assuming the source of the import is the solid state drive.
so im trying to do the ram upgrate i currently have 4gb of memory and trying to do 8 like you...my harddrive is 500gb and well i dont want to touch that but the RAM upgrading it will increase the speed of my mac right? like the boot up and performance??
@nemo13831 Not exactly. Upgrading the RAM means that your computer will have a better preformance when working with big files. 4gb ram is often more than enough, but when you work with huge files in programs like Photoshop the 8gb will help you. Increasing your RAM won't do anything for the boot up time. If you do a lot of video editing or use virtual machines like VMware Fusion or Parallels you should consider upgrading your RAM. For better boottimes, get an SSD. Hope this helped.
Can you update a detailed installation of the data doubler and how to format drives afterward video? Unless that is Part 3? Seems a lot of people are curious/need help.
I by the way have already installed the data doubler succesfully but please jonathan just for the sake of the other people: put up the video! you said you already had it but you still haven't uploaded it and it's been 2 months!
I have a quick question. would you recomend putting a SSD on my macbook as the main drive and then having another HDD (as an external or maybe instead of the optical drive) for storage? or what would you suggest as a solution?... I like the speed of SSDs but having my laptop with only 128GB wouldn't really do it for me :S
I have just bought 15 inch 2.2Ghz Quad core i7 macbook pro @ 4GB RAM and have bought 8GB ram online with crucial 'dot com'... I'm a complete novice to Mac but it is a fantastic Device...
A few recommendations for anyone seeking to purchase a mac.
1) UPGRADE the RAM to 8GB but DO NOT upgrade with apple store it is half price with 'Crucial dot com'
2) Get a High Res screen and IF you can afford it ANTI-GLARE is definitely best
3) SSD is worth considering but wait for price reductions
when will part 3 be coming out? Soon I hope since I really want to get a data doubler and a secondary harddrive for my own macbook pro but I would like to see how to install it first....
@rtownz251251 I recently bought the data doubler and a secondary hard drive for my MBP. I can tell you that the process is very easy and the included instructions are detailed. I moved my OEM 500GB HD to the data doubler and installed a 256GB Samsung 830 drive.
SSDs do really stand upto their expectation, for that precisely few seconds earlier bootups, fast data duplication and so on.. SSDs cost you more and in return just give you what you expect from it, still i would suggest a normal daily user to stick with normal HDD they can opt in for 500 GB 7200 rpm instead of 750 GB 5400 rpm to get a bit higher speed, but spending around 70 pounds extra for a base level SSD is just not something really recommended. I won't just suggest whatsoever!
Really a very obvious thing, although the tests were not of that high quality or that highly accurate, it was the real scenario test that is what actually matter to general public, rather than those rpm and other kind of figures, that are just of no meaning to a layman person.
Whatever you consider, it still remains much faster than the Windows, Microsoft is just way far behind than this, 1 / 2
does this void the warranty? i'm just asking because i did not see any steps that would show the tech guys from apple(after switching it back to original) that there was a 2nd drive in there..
Hi all, looking for anyone who could possibly help me...
I've got the 2011 13" Pro and after a few days of use, with very minimal stuff on my 500gb HDD, and by minimal I mean I still have 479gb or something left, it's started to become noisy. I've read up and seen it's a common problem that I will just "have to put up with as it's the new Toshiba drive". Would an SSD resolve this issue? Would it be near silent once again? Thanks in advance if anyone can help =)
Love your videos man. I am considering buying a MacBook Pro soon, and your videos really help alot. I was close to buying it prior seeing your vids, but now I'm even more convinced. + your editing and 'to the point' style is great. /me likes
@tldtoday Could you please put in a Seagate Momentus XT and see how it compares to the SSD and the normal HDD? I know it would be a bit of a pain but it would totally show people the alternative option if they can't afford and SSD and want a fast HDD. Thanks!
i appreciate you making these vids and you mainly convinced me to purchase the mbp 2011. im not sure that spending the extra 300 bones on the ram and ssd is worth the seemingly minimal speed bump. the machine is pretty fast for me as is. unless you have a different point of view?????
@imlike15 Seagate Momentus XT. Google it, get it. It's only a little more expensive than a normal HDD, MUCH cheaper than the SSD, holds 500GB and is only on average 2-3 seconds slower than the SSD but 8-10 faster than a normal HDD.
i dont think its worth the price and i would rather have 750GB than 120GB ...... and just change the ram to 8gb is good enough im not impassient and can wait a extra 5-10 seconds :P
hi, i m using a Macbook Pro 15" (bought it last year 2010) with Core 2 Duo inside...is it possible to change the RAM/ROM and also to Intel Core i7 ??? or is impossible..thanks....I asked this as i saw ur using all version of Macbook..with silver colour frame...thanks
say you're already using the drive and then you wanna move it to become the secondary one and add the ssd as primary.. what do i do with the old Mac OSX
I am going to buy the 15" model but if I get the lower end one then I can get the better display but with the higher end I would get a better graphics card. What Should I get?
@apokolips why would you want to remove OS X without formatting? That's essentially one of the reasons why someone WOULD format a drive. But to answer your question, I guess just deleting everything on the drive (including hidden files) would do the trick...
great vedio, as always! I want to get a macbook, would you give me any ideas that if i should choose between macbook air 13'', 4G ram and 250 G SSD or new 15'' macbook pro. I don't really do any vedio editing or gaming. but i watch a lot of movies and vedios online and i write a lot. thanks!
I have the Momentus XT Hybrid 500GB/4GB SSD in my MacBook Pro and it's pretty quick for its price. My battery seems to take a toll since it's 7200rpm but it's as close as I'll be getting to a REAL SSD for a while unless the prices are dropped.
@timewarptrio11 well, if you want to run multiple programs more ram is good, if you want to multitask without any lag then a high cpu is good, and if you want to store a lot of stuff then a HDD. SO, it really all depends on what you want to do.
@timewarptrio11 - CPU, as you can upgrade the other hardware later down the line. CPU is the thing you're going to have to live with for the lifetime of a laptop.
@tldtoday - Yes, it's true. I've been a bit worried about TRIM support for the MacBook Pro I've just got (video on channel btw ;) which has an SSD. Mac OS X Lion is going to support TRIM.
@earlbee31 like he said, the newest model of macbook pros come with a specialized OS that has a few features that Lion will have. one of these features is TRIM support.
@bville986 Unfortunately unlike HDDs they degrade over time and loose speed, at to a certain point won't work. Apple has implemented a new feature(Not sure off the top of my head) that allows SSDs to be taken care of better, but none the less a degrading effect will occur on any SSD. PCM might be the way to go, but it isn't out yet. There is a video about PCM on youtube you might want to check out :)
hey jonathan do you have to reinstall os if you are upgrading ram thanks

thetommantom 11 months ago
Just twice as fast ? And no access time lag.
toocoolforu 11 months ago
@abovePL1 And also you have to use less memory or you have to pay 1k to get a 750gb one

so im guessing ssds are the way to go nowadays?
bville986 11 months ago 14
@bville986
not really, at least not yet.
when a HDD crashes, its possible to retrieve the info, but that cant be said for the SSD
cardboardpox 11 months ago
@bville986 Unfortunately unlike HDDs they degrade over time and loose speed, at to a certain point won't work. Apple has implemented a new feature(Not sure off the top of my head) that allows SSDs to be taken care of better, but none the less a degrading effect will occur on any SSD. PCM might be the way to go, but it isn't out yet. There is a video about PCM on youtube you might want to check out :)
