Japan holds more US debt than China ? If you go by sovereign holdings, China has nearly 2 Trillions $, Japan about 1 Trillion $. Does Chomsky mean privately held debt as well ????
@wildpett: I think he's going by the Dec '09 Treasury Dept estimates, released in Feb, which put Japan ahead of China. However, as I understand it, it is only an estimate, subject to error. In any case they are neck in neck. Chomsky's only point was that, given how much US debt Japan holds (almost as much as China), this means huge holdings of US debt aren't any threat if the holders of it depend on the US as a market for its products.

@wildpett Japan also happens to be fitting the bill for the U.S. bases stationed in Okinawa.
