I'm a guitarist. I've been playing this kind of music all of my adult life, and I love it. I can never get over the INTENSITY of rhythm Hooker gets out of his guitar- leaves my jaw hanging. He could've been a helluva drummer.
The "dislikes" reflect an underdose of Preparation H.
His VJ tracks were very good, but here in late 40,s is JLH at his broodin, blusiest best, although its on Modern Label, we should nod to Bernie Bessman for recordin John in Detroit, who had the Sensation label, who then let Modern hav em.
@gitfiddlejim Recorded at United Sound Systems there in Detroit, whilst Bessman was the first owner (opened in 1933) before Don Davis became the second owner, which became a fantastic hit factory and had one hell of a track record.
No one seems to do it like that anymore. We have Paul Jones in UK, radio show, the description on the BBC say the cream, the classice of blues, yet most of the hour plays modern inferior remakes of blues, to me most of it sounds like heavy metal, if I tuned in part way through Id be hard pressed to realise it was a blues show.
Yet there is so much outstandin old stuff that many never hear.
Met JLH in 1964 on Linwood St. in Detroit. He hung out before playing the clubs and would buy a bottle from a local liquor store near the Blvd. Smooth guy from what I recall also somewhat feared.
I had the pleasure of hanging out w/ JLK at his home just B4 he passed. It was quite a memorable experience! He autographed a bunch of items for me...
let me tell you what:there was only ONE John Lee on this world.and there's only one true bluesmusic...don't bother me with your soul or r'n'b crap this is the real deal thanks for postin' this one

this song typifies John Lee's sound and how it dieefered from Mud
more drone-more country-and a whole lot more evil
if you love this like I do, check out R.L. Burnside 'Poor Black Mattie', one of john's many decedents
-cracked up below when someone said Zep was influenced by Willie Dixon
uh, Willie Dixon sued Zep for covering his songs uncredited ['I Can't Quit You' etc]and WON
saying Zep-or any 'rock'-is influenced by the blues like saying Luke Perry of 90210 was influenced by James Dean

Sounds like Zeppelin liked John Lee Hooker quite a bit. Why not? He Rocked before Rock even came along.

@sivvybee Zepplin, the Stones, and several bands were heavily influenced by rhythm and blues music men like Hooker, and Willie Dixon.
