This is one of the only bands that actually gets BETTER with each release, It does sound a bit like some Opeth releases but is that really a bad thing?
Enslaved have always been oddballs within black metal, their Viking metal releases were pretty standard, but then they started towards a more progressive style. This album is still very black, with heavy progressive elements. You still have tons of blast beats and tremolo picking, with a heavy focus of atmosphere. That's the basics of black metal, mixed with tone shifts and technicality of progressive metal. To say this album isn't black metal is ignorant.

@jaramungas They got better, that's what happened. I love both frosty, old-school BM and this more progressive newer stuff. The atmosphere they create is better now, which is one of the main objectives of black metal. You'll be hard-pressed to find a 2010 metal record that tops this.

They celebrate pagan heritage and condemn its oppressors; much more interesting than rambling on about Satan, who doesn't even exist. The music is not just one repeated idea throughout an entire song, which is sadly what quite a lot of black metal is. I love everything from Transylvanian Hunger to Revelations of the Black Flame to Fallen to this album.

I'm glad bloody rock fire put that up, i was beginning to feel like the only metalhead who doesn't like opeth. I don't think they suck per se, but i can't work out what everybody likes about them. Incidentally, i'm a trained classical pianist with an honours degree, so i like to think i know good music when i hear it, and opeth doesn't tick that box. It's harmonically unimaginative (using the odd extension chord does not make prog music) and very repetitive And yes, i too love bloodbath.

I'm not 100% loving the clean vocals that start some of the verses during the "slower" parts. Otherwise, it's great. I like the production better than Vertebrae, but it could still use some more lower end. This album will further alienate black metal purist. Enslaved are the exact opposite of Mayhem today. Sure both were great black metal bands in 94, but Enslaved are the only ones to expand their sound, and abandon the black metal constraints, although your opinion may vary on which is better.

Enslaved are fantastically excellent, along with Nachtmystium (Addicts just blew me away!) I think we're living in VERY INTERESTING times nowadays, at least music wise.

Although I agree that those with Anglo/Saxon heritage and/or Scandinavian ancestry need to have pride and understand their origins, every race on earth can complain the same way: that they are exploited daily. What shall set the Nordic peoples apart from the rest will be an unyielding devotion to their own history and pride in tradition. Enslaved are fulfilling this through music
