@elmalloc That's an early model, the current model is still the same but has a full frontal grill that covers the horns mouth so it looks just like a dual 18 cabinet would.
@TimpBizkit The Growler vs LA400 comparison has already been done, end results in favor of the Growler. I don't know if the other two have had a direct comparison yet but spec wise they are very close with a little extra extension in favor of the KF940. Price wise the JOrbit Shifter comes in cheaper plus the Orbit shifter weighs in 133 pounds less then the KF940 so I would go for the Orbit Shifter of the two myself.
The T48 is more in the league as the JTR Growler which weighs less (88 lbs vs 90lbs) smaller then the T48 (30"x20"x22.5" vs 48"x24"x24") but still goes deaper then the T48 (the Growler is +/-3db @ 41hz while the T48 is -10db @ 50hz). They both still have a 133db potential but the Growler does it in a much smaller package while still going lower in the frequency range & with a flatter response.
@indestructible306 Read up before commenting, look it up & you'll find the T48 doesn't stand next to it. It would take something like the T60 to be in the same league.
@MrNightro ..im not saying they suck or the titans are btr cause i havent heard a orbit shifter before, but i was on their website and those things are big, heavy, expenssive and you need a sick ass amp to power them.you get more bang for the buck out of a pair of titan 48's...thats why i built 2 of them and im going to build maybe 2 more cause with these 2 im already rocking the party.....not bad for for being 15's comapared to the orbit shifter's 18 inch 30mm xmax driver..peace
@indestructible306 The T48 has a 10db drop from 100hz to 50hz while the Orbit only has a +/- 3db drop from 121hz to 37hz. Size wise they are both in the same ball park so that's a none issue. The T48 hits power compression at 500 watts while the Orbit can see itself clear allthe way to 4,000 watts (though it doesn't need to), keep in mind that both subs have a 106db sensitivty so which one you think would go louder? Again no comparison.
@indestructible306 If both have a sensitivity of 106db but the T48 is limited to 500 watts then it is capable of 133db while the Orbit shifter can go to 4,000 watts then it's capable of 142db. What this means is one on one the Orbit shifter is 1db shy of being twice as loud as the T48 (meaning it would take three T48 to be as loud as one Orbit Shifter). The Orbit shifter as flat enough to reach further up the mid bass region then the T48 & goes well lower then the T48.
@indestructible306 Full size double 60"x30"x30" T60 vs the Orbit Shifter. With the massive size of the T60 you could bring two Orbit Shifters & by that time the T60 has met it's match. Bring one of the single loaded T60 & a single Orbit Shifter outshines it again. Price wise yeah DIY comes in cheaper but have these made by an authorized builder & there goes that edge. DIY leans itself to too much builder variations & error thus a large swing in performance potential & visual appeal.
@MrNightro .i feel you on the tuba 60 those are huge, and are not really recomended for mibile dj cause of its size.they will be great for a permanent club install..another reason i built the 2 titan 48's its cause of their weight they are under 120 lbs each and thats realy light..hey dont forget i also built 2 18 inch super scoopers and those things weight like tanks but still sound good..its just the weight that kills me
@MrNightro ..cont..i wish i could aford a orbit shifter cause i will love to have on of those.i love speakers man and i dont like to talk smack.every design has it ups and downs..but the titan 48 for just having/using a 15 inch driver it kicks ass. you dont need lots of power to be loud..i play mines at low volume and you can her the thump from far far away the bass is outhere all over the place..not like bass reflex ...lol tk my friend and happy fathers day if your one...
@indestructible306 Thanks, I used to have a couple T30 slims (24" wide HL10a loaded) & a T24 (have plans for many other BFM cabinets as well. I loved those things (performed well past my expectations at the time) & was sad to see them go but I like to test the waters when new things come along so it was time for a change. I did a direct somparison of the T30 to the Growlers (own 6) the T30 performed well but the Growler just edged it out (though I didn't build the T30 to it's full potential).
DjBman I was told an orbit shifter was = to 3 growlers for db output but went lower. Have you done a side by side comparison and what are your real world thoughts?
@harleyshouseofsound, I was able to hear one OS against 2 of the 2010 growlers and I can say that the OS was louder and deeper than 2 growlers, so what you heard may be correct. It has the same sound as a Growler except it goes lower. I actually use my OS's more than my growlers because they're easier to move around if you can believe that. The casters and handles save my back.
@harleyshouseofsound All right. I must have something wrong with the wiring is all I can figure. Jeff is workin on the problem right now. Thanks. Just wanted a 3 parties input.
@MrNightro, for now my plx 3602 until I get a Lab Gruppen. I'm not using them to their full potential by any means but I don't need to. They are loud enough with just 1200 watts going thru them. I actually prefer the OS's over the Growlers because I dont have to pick the OS's up except to load them in the van and that's easy...I just back it up to the door, lift from the bottom and push it in. I can fit 2 orbit shifters , 2 T-12's, amp rack turntables and mixer comfortably in a ford windstar.
@djbman81 I have a few people begging me to sell them my Growlers so it would be an option to step up to the Orbit Shifters. My only issue is too many times I get stuck lifting everything back by myself. Some gigs are two to three flights of stairs & the outdoor gigs are on big open grassy fields so the Growlers are perfect for that. If I do step up to the Orbit Shifters I'll see about getting special order 8 0hm drivers made for my PL380 so I can bridge it & get 8,000* watts to the pair.
Trust and believe that the speaker lives up to its name. I've brought them to 2 different clubs and I seen bottles of liquor fall of the shelf as well as signs at one and the tiles from the ceiling fell down at the other. (Had to turn them down on each occasion) and this was only with 1200 watts going to each one.
@djbman81 What amp are you using for these? Really it's only the weight issue stopping me from getting a pair of these, I used to have subs that weighed in about the same as these & they weren't fun for the 3am return trip when your caught out by yourself with no one there to help with the return trip. I have been tempted from day one to try a pair of these though, who knows I may just go ahead & buy a pair next year.

I wonder how the JTR Growler compares against an EAW LA400,
I also wonder how the JTR Orbit Shifter does against an EAW KF940

The KF940 has always been for me the subwoofer I would like to own but I think the orbit shifter might beat it.
KF940: 13 foot horn, 2x12 inch, 1600 watt RMS, 113dB 1w/1m at 100Hz, 24Hz extension
Orbit Shifter: 8 foot horn, 18 inch, 4000 watt RMS, 103dB 1w/1m across the range, 37Hz extension
I think a single Orbit Shifter would beat a KF940, but KF940s would improve more stacked in groups.
Both subs will kick ass. The KF940 seems to have phenomenal efficiency at 100hz but not sure about lower.

how do you think they would do up against the Tuba Subwoofer.
