Didn't Snake's stealth suit have an insulating layer? It would have to have done, or he would've come down with Hypothermia within minutes of arriving in Shadow Moses. In that case, he should've been fine in the microwave as long as he donned his mask. It doesn't take very much to absorb microwaves.

Snake's face was unharmed because his suit kept blocking the rays coming from behind him, the microwave couldn't produce enough ray convergence to burn him
Most moving game I ever played, I played MGS1 - 2 and 4 and man Solid Snake is my hero. I was very hard to see him getting old that fast, burned, crushed, humiliated by others, losing meryl, and then the microwave scene was too much for me I weeped. Not during the microwave scene but right at the end when the robots get desactivated and snake closes his eyes near the GW.
I wonder if you can just let him die, I always seem to run out of health at the end and still make it through, so wouldn't it basically be the same without actually moving?

@gamapg To clarafy, he just went through the pits of hell before, LITTERIALLY 1 min before, he was swarmed by about 500 unmaned monkies, that's what I call them, there accually mini gecko, AND fought a really tough boss, AND defended against swarms of enemies RIGHT before he went through. And he is also about 60 years old, so why didn't he just sprint through? I'm not quite sure.
@gamapg Try opening the door to a extreamly hot oven and see how you react, the heat causes you to jolt backwards, making it hard for you to go near the open oven, it's quite difficult to move towards it. I don't think if your whole body was exposed to microwaves like this, you would physically be able to run, it would be too painful.
Hardest thing in my whole life, after non-stop playing MGS4 until that point without break then having to go through a grueling few minutes of that, I was praying to god that Snake survived that for my and my fingers sake.

The blue rose in the ending on the top screen really had me touched...it symbolized sunny's happiness. I gotta admit, Mr.Kojima really is a genius. Tapping the triangle button faster and faster makes you feel snake's pain and suffering. And I gotta tell ya, it hurts like hell. Nearly sheded a tear... :,)
This is the MOST EPIC part of the whole game, a person, who has nothing to lose, sacrificing his life to save the others. This game shouldn't have been sad like this. I didn't have fun. It was heart breaking...

How many of you people who actually find these scene epic, have ever considered these two things:
1. That hallway is the worst trap ever, since Snake can basically walk through it. If he ran, he wouldn't have suffered ANY damage, not had anyone else who goes in there.
2. While he didn't want Raiden to go in there, he did leave him with tens of Haven Troopers, which is a lot more dangerous than that hallway. What the fuck!?
Am I the only one who even sees the paradoxes here?

What if Snake had run? Probably would have gotten a few burns here and there, but nothing to be worried about. He could've also reduced the time being in there into something like twenty seconds or more.
What if someone else would've gone? Take Raiden for an example, he would've made like two huge leaps and wouldn't have gotten a scratch. Instead, we see him just barely surviving against Haven troopers. Soooo, in what way did Snake "sacrifice" himself?

Read my comments again with care. In case you didn't figure it out thus far, I wasn't questioning WHY Snake crawled through the hallway. If you didn't understand even that, I highly doubt you understand what the word "epic" even means.
And your comment about how there were many unrealistic elements in the plot, I agree. But it's not realism I'm looking for here, it's logic. In the world of MGS unrealistic and even supernatural things have always been logical. They happen all the time and don't need explanation. But MGS4 doesn't follow the same logic.
Take Vamp for example. In MGS2, it was logical he was a vampire. But in MGS4 the explanation just doesn't make any sense. How in the holy mother of ass is it possible for nanomachines to fix your body to the point, where your brain will repair itself after being blown to pieces, without even any changes in your personality?
Then again, these same nanomachines cannot be used to prevent a person from aging rapidly. What the shit?
So, it's not a problem in realism, but a problem in logic.

The same thing with the microwave scene. For the scene to be epic, you'd really have to get a feeling that the fate of the world is at stake. But I don't get that feeling. Instead I'm thinking about the following things:
1. That microwave hallway was the weakest trap ever.
2. Snake left Raiden to die for no apparent reason.
3. Those Haven troopers have guns too, so why use blades?
4. Then again the same highly trained troopers fail to kill Meryl and Johnny, even though they're cornered.

So, let's review this scene in full: Hundreds of Haven troopers get killed by Meryl and Johnny, because they refuse to shoot them (or better yet, throw a grenade), the other Haven troopers switch to blades just so that the main character wouldn't die, and the only character who just lost his ability to even stand up decides to take on the microwave hallway... and still gets through it. ... ... ...
I'm sorry if I just don't find this epic. To me, the whole scene was just a big question mark.
Its your own incompetence that makes you unable to appreciate the epicness of this scene. To answer your childish complains.
1. The Microwave was not weakest, but an immense test of Snake's will. I don't know how else to put it. Just because Snake makes it to the end does not mean its weak- it means Snake is that good.

@darkmario2007 Because they had no idea what was waiting for them on the other side. The MKII needed to be defended. And, as we saw, those tiny, three armed black sphere assholes swarmed the place. Snake had to hold them off.

The blue rose in the ending on the top screen really had me touched...it symbolized sunny's happiness. I gotta admit, Mr.Kojima really is a genius. Tapping the triangle button faster and faster makes you feel snake's pain and suffering. And I gotta tell ya, it hurts like hell. Nearly sheded a tear... :,)

@Hatlevig69 i have never ever played any other MGS game other than 4, i always watched my bro because i was 5 when 1 came out. but i love the series. i wish i could go back and enjoy the feeling of all his missions, but still i too felt an emotional sting. just not even close to as deep as yours.

How many of you people who actually find these scene epic, have ever considered these two things:
1. That hallway is the worst trap ever, since Snake can basically walk through it. If he ran, he wouldn't have suffered ANY damage, not had anyone else who goes in there.
2. While he didn't want Raiden to go in there, he did leave him with tens of Haven Troopers, which is a lot more dangerous than that hallway. What the fuck!?
Am I the only one who even sees the paradoxes here?

Understand one thing and one thing only, the power the microwaves in that hallway are definitely just as or even stronger than a normal microwave. if you allowed put tinfoil in your microwave for half a minute and see what happens. :) that should show them how dangerous it is.

At the briefing, the microwave room was considered the most dangerous thing in the whole ship, one which would ultimately lead this operation in failure.
Then, some time later, an old man FUCKING CRAWLS THROUGH IT! Do you understand? The most dangerous trap in the whole ship was a hallway you could stay in for 3 minutes and still survive.

What if Snake had run? Probably would have gotten a few burns here and there, but nothing to be worried about. He could've also reduced the time being in there into something like twenty seconds or more.
What if someone else would've gone? Take Raiden for an example, he would've made like two huge leaps and wouldn't have gotten a scratch. Instead, we see him just barely surviving against Haven troopers. Soooo, in what way did Snake "sacrifice" himself?
Cheesy, not the least bit epic.

CountAbel, you are the one bitching about microwaves. a lot of things in the game weren't realistic, as for why he didn't let Raiden go, its because snake himself wanted to see the destruction of Patriot's system. Why didn't he run? In the cut scene before microwave we see him trembling and falling to the ground, he has no energy left in his body, its pretty much mind of matter situation. now you can apologies for being a troll and questioning the epicness of MGS4.

In the world of MGS unrealistic and even supernatural things have always been logical. They happen all the time and don't need explanation. But MGS4 doesn't follow the same logic.

Take Vamp for example. In MGS2, it was logical he was a vampire. But in MGS4 the explanation just doesn't make any sense. How in the holy mother of ass is it possible for nanomachines to fix your body to the point, where your brain will repair itself after being blown to pieces, without even any changes in your personality?
Then again, these same nanomachines cannot be used to prevent a person from aging rapidly. What the shit?
So, it's not a problem in realism, but a problem in logic.

The same thing with the microwave scene. For the scene to be epic, you'd really have to get a feeling that the fate of the world is at stake. But I don't get that feeling. Instead I'm thinking about the following things:
1. That microwave hallway was the weakest trap ever.
2. Snake left Raiden to die for no apparent reason.
3. Those Haven troopers have guns too, so why use blades?
4. Then again the same highly trained troopers fail to kill Meryl and Johnny, even though they're cornered.

So, let's review this scene in full: Hundreds of Haven troopers get killed by Meryl and Johnny, because they refuse to shoot them (or better yet, throw a grenade), the other Haven troopers switch to blades just so that the main character wouldn't die, and the only character who just lost his ability to even stand up decides to take on the microwave hallway... and still gets through it. ... ... ...
I'm sorry if I just don't find this epic. To me, the whole scene was just a big question mark.
