Lets not forget Jim Shuttleworth guys, Robin Olds was a great guy and so was Jim, unfortunately not long after he restored Scat VII he crashed at Oshkosh and was killed, Scat VII however was restored and is still flying. That plane is a flying memorial to two great men.
I just finished reading his book, "Fighter Pilot!" In Viet Nam, with 4 Migs to his credit, he was giving his wingmen the chance to shoot down enemy aircraft he had as "meat on the table," since he knew he would be sent immediately Stateside upon claiming a 5th victory. A major stud, this man!
Col. Olds was always one of my heroes. I am an artist and I have done his P38 many times. When I went in the Air Force back in the 60s the motto of the USAF was "Peace is our profession." Col. Olds would always say "Peace is NOT my profession!"
Robin was one of my dad's best friends. When they cut to the artwork depicting two p-38s on D-Day, the lead bird is Robin, and the wingman is my dad. Artwork's name: Front Row Seats hangs next to my pool table.
Is I had the pleasure of knowing Robin. Head some very interesting stories about his role in Vietnam, including an audience with LBJ. Quite a man.
Robin and Scat VII are gone. Dad misses him.
Scat VII crashed and its owner, Jim Shuttleworth, died in the crash.
What I love about him was he was a renegade. He was devout in his service, but if he didnt agree with something his superiors wanted , he voiced his opinion & let it be known -- that is the mark of a risk taker, someone who gets the impossible done! THAT is what true Americans do ! Our country is grooming a bunch of pussies at this point in our history, its time to take the culture back !!
I was very fortunate to have met this man! I was a medic at the Air Force Academy Hospital when Colonel Olds, leaving Vietnam and being promoted to General, was in the hospital for his annual flight physical, being re-assigned to the Air Force Academy as Commandant of Cadets.
I was sitting at the console monitoring the heart rates and rhythms of our cardiac patients when General Olds strolled down the hall, stood at the door, and asked me for my permission to enter!
I was just a Buck Sergeant, and here he was, a General, asking my permission to enter the nurses's station, and asking me about my duties! Wearing his blue patient pajamas and his blue and white striped robe, hands in his pockets.
Ask me about his Confidential medical record! I had a Secret Security Clearance before I was assigned to the Air Force Academy Hospital.
A triple ace! I met him! He asked me for my permission!
He is the best of the best and he is my hero
