My family had a cat who would stick her paw in her drinking water, too. However, she did so without us having to put any food in it. She did it on her own, leading us to believe she saw the drinking water as a bathing font. This often irritated the other cat. Ironically, the cat who put her paw in the drinking water in the kitchen occasionally drank straight from the toilet. The other cat never did.
