That is a good question, that I've thought a lot about as well. Basically, I've come to the somewhat-conclusion that to be a gamer, you need to enjoy playing lots of different games, have an appreciation for more than one genre, have gaming knowledge and some amount of skill, and spend a good amount of your time playing games. E.g.: If you spend all your time playing WoW and only WoW, unskillfully, you're not a gamer. I would put myself under the category of "Fan of Games" rather than "Gamer.
I prefer older games over the newer ones as well. I like the newer ones but I LOVE N64 and super Nintendo, and gamecube, gameboy color, gameboy advanced, dreamcast etc...mario zelda(favorite) pokemon etc..
Like any normal teenage girl (...) I play things like Uncharted and Tomb Raider but also Zelda and Pokemon. I swear no girl plays Pokemon any more! I am the sadist teenage girl alive...
What about people who only play board games? Or card games? Or chess? Can they still be counted as a gamer? The games they play may nit be electronic but they're still games.

I have never considered myself a "gamer" per say but i suppose i kind of am in retrospect. i play mostly zelda, but a recent romance has interested me in other games such as Portal, Left for dead 2 and...plants vs zombies.
but i suppose making it a personal goal in my life to write down the entire script of Ocarina of time probably qualifies me to some extent as a game nerd.
In my room I have a NES with tetris, mario bros/duckhunt, and paper boy., a N64 with pokemon stadium, mariokart 64 golden eye and ZELDA, a gameboy color with pokemon blue, yellow, red, platinum, white, tetris, and donkey kong. All Nintendo. All older than me (well not all of them but damn we're about the same age) I have a playstion TWO also old. and the newest thing I have is a wii. I think being a gamer is just being passionate about games that you love to play. It's not about being up to date
I actually get people on my back every now and again just because I prefer old games as well. It kind of bugs me because they may be old, and have less superior graphics, but does that take down the merit of the game? To me it certainly doesn't. The only game newer than a Gamecube game that I've beaten in\s Portal 2, simply because newer games don't seem to hold my interest very well.

My favourite games: Mario Kart DS/Wii, Super Mario 64 DS, Animal Crossing Wild World. I was obsessed with video games (especially these) from ages 11 to 13. I spent most of my time playing video games or on the gaming forum called Neoseeker. I think I was a real gamer. Now I'm a casual gamer and obsessed with Spongebob :D (I'm nearly 16)
I love my N64 :) My favorites are Mario Cart and Gauntlet Legends. I also like to play a lot of the old Dos games like Commander Keen, Paganitzu, and Crystal Caverns, just to name a few.
Puzzley games like Portal but also puzzles, the ones with pieces you do on tables! That's a game! Just...less advanced. No but seriously, any games that include a good deal of problem solving are good with me :D I am probably not a gamer...
Mariokart and Dr. Mario are the two N64 games I rock at :) Honestly, being a gamer just means you like videogames and have at least one that you can start up a conversation with another gamer about. Usually a competitive game, or one like Zelda where you're trying to beat the game. Ones like Sims don't count because there is no end and nobody to OWN... which is kind of the point of gaming. And yes, Sims makes you sadistic... I still have my purple see-through N64 sitting in the living room :D
If it makes you feel any better, the only gaming systems I own and play is a Sega Genesis and a Gameboy Advance. My next step is acquiring a N64 to start my Zelda career. Sadly I started playing the gameboy game first, and I think it's high time I do it the right way. And Mario of course, but mostly Zelda.
@american09mutt I can't say I'm a fan of Goldeneye, but I'll definitely get Mario Kart. I've played through the N64 version at my fiend's house and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really want to get Pokemon Stadium as well :D

Fuck it, I'm continuing. Despite the impending inconsistency I will say that hardcore gamers have a much deeper understanding of game mechanics and gaming terms than casuals. They tend to favour one genre, but are well versed in other genres as well.

This gamer plays exlcusively Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. He (because they are always male) usually has a YouTube channel on which he "pwnz n00bz" and "rocks da house like a pro!" or something similar.
A hardcore gamer is an individual whose primary hobby is gaming. They will spend at least 3-5 hours a day playing video games. They are very informed about games, subscribed to numerous game related YouTube channels and frequently visit official and unofficial gaming forums. They are usually if not always familiar with internet culture, and generally enjoy the internet and are part of some sort of internet community. You know what? You know enough now.
A gamer is an individual who plays video games regularly, has a basic understanding of game mechanics and is familiar with basic terms. There are several types of gamers. The two basic ones:
Casual gamers, are gamers who play only on the weekend or just whenever they don't have anything else to do, preferably with friends, without putting too much thought into it. They aren't associated with any particular genre except perhaps party games. Damn, I can't finish my comment here.
I play video games every now and then, but I don't think I count as a gamer (even though I would like to). A gamer, imho, is someone who plays on a regular basis (at least once a week?) AND who also keeps up with knowledge about new releases.

I'm not a gamer so.....
I play Sims, but that not exactly a "gamer game", even though I have almost every Sims game that has been released.
I think a gamer is.....well, I'm not sure.

I don't know if I can be considered a gamer. All my friends are gamers, I know a shitload about games, we have long, in depth conversations about games, but I can't actually play games. Well, I can play Guitar Hero, but I don't think that counts...

So my thoughts on it is that it doesnt just take a person who enjoys video games to be a "gamer" you need to be interested in them. love the way they work and the thought that goes into them. Retro video games are the best because they are the base of where they came from. we couldnt have games like COD or NHL12 if there wasnt those overly simple games for systems like the NES. But seriously you arent a gamer if all you do is play Call of Duty online, then you just need to get a life ;)

Fuck it, I'm continuing. Despite the impending inconsistency I will say that hardcore gamers have a much deeper understanding of game mechanics and gaming terms than casuals. They tend to favour one genre, but are well versed in other genres as well.
Now on to the so called douchebag gamer:
This gamer plays exlcusively Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. He (because they are always male) usually has a YouTube channel on which he "pwnz n00bz" and "rocks da house like a pro!" or something similar.

They are very informed about games, subscribed to numerous game related YouTube channels and frequently visit official and unofficial gaming forums. They are usually if not always familiar with internet culture, and generally enjoy the internet and are part of some sort of internet community. You know what? You know enough now.

A gamer is an individual who plays video games regularly, has a basic understanding of game mechanics and is familiar with basic terms. There are several types of gamers. The two basic ones:
Casual gamers, are gamers who play only on the weekend or just whenever they don't have anything else to do, preferably with friends, without putting too much thought into it. They aren't associated with any particular genre except perhaps party games. Damn, I can't finish my comment here.

I play video games every now and then, but I don't think I count as a gamer (even though I would like to). A gamer, imho, is someone who plays on a regular basis (at least once a week?) AND who also keeps up with knowledge about new releases.
