macLean wrote this novel .his memoirs for his grandchildren, his father was a presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman. it's beautiful.he was 70 when he wrote this, his brother is gone, as is the america he tells us about.
If you look very closely at the river run scene you will notice that some of the later scenes have a much cooler light than the earlier portion of the scene.
This scene was reshot in the winter when Robert Redford was not satisfied with the shots they had. Jason had to rerun the river during winter in period clothing. If you look closely, you can tell which scenes were shot during the warm light of summer filming and which ones were reshot in the cool winter light .
I hate to burst your bubble but Brad Pitt did not do the casting or the river float during this scene nor did he do the shadow casting. The casting and swimming dowb stream was performed by Jason Borger, who was Pitt's casting double.
My father is fisherman and he love this movie..and now i love this movie too.The place where brad is fishing seems like a "peace of heaven" for me,amazing.
I'm no fisher but I still love this movie, because of the passion in the movie towards it. It makes me feel the passion for the things I do, and this scene sums it all up - the strive for perfection.

why, this scene reminds me of a huge trout I reeled in on a fly I tied and on a river just like that one, only it was bigger and faster. Of course, the one I hooked was much larger and did put up more of a fight than Paul's there..yeah, that's the ticket...it took me three days to land it and I followed it seventeen miles down stream before I caught and released it. Would have fed a family of four for weeks..yeah, that's the ticket.

@riverunsthru Ending is very sad, even if Paul didn't actually die in his home town (he died in Chicago.) It was his vices that killed him.

Mr. Pitt is (or was) a awesome flyfisherman!!!
I Have doubt if he´s flyfishing in present days....
But this scene is the most spetacular encenation of the most flyfishers dream!!!
