  • In response to the top comment, I think Jason Beck was just as original but it was easier for people to copy his style. I like both of them but "neoclassical" only became a big thing in guitar world because of what he did. So both are original, but Lane's amazing technique and style are just way too hard to copy. And I think the "neoclassical" was more approachable and immediately understandable.

  • Did shawn ever play with holdsworth?

  • THE BEST.. PERIOD..!!!

  • Buckethead

  • @Brentypooz naaahhh

  • @Brentypooz No, it's Shawn Lane :)

  • @pipon55 noo im commenting buckethead to see what people think of him! sorry :D

  • In his short life Shawn Lane was able to master all sorts of Western music and then he went over to India and mastered their music. Had he lived there's no telling what other musical styles he would have added to his repertoire.

  • great player

  • Shawn was and is the best electric guitar player that ever lived. Ask any of the schredders of today who is better them or Shawn and they will all say the same thing (including Paul Gilbert) Shawn was and still is. Period!

  • @neoclasiccl no way Jose. guthrie govan all day! lol just my opinion

  • @henryshomebrew Just ask Guthrie Govan who is the better guitarist. He will say Shawn everytime. Just watch this video and you will understand. watch?v=tqYmFk6htyA

  • @neoclasiccl well i wouldn't like GG half as much if he came out and said "oh, I'm the best". that being said, i was simply stating my opinion. not trying to take anything away from the absolutely amazing shawn lane, GG is just the best bang for my buck. unparalleled phrasing and versatility, again IMO.

  • @neoclasiccl ps guthrie does not imply that shawn is the best, or even better than anyone else in this video. he just talks about how shawn was a big influence for him, and a great musician.

  • why have I never heard of this guy before? he's amazing!

  • @tangypasta because your 22, and haven't yet realized that the great players of today built their chops of the monster that have preceded them- gilbert, vanhalen, bratta

  • @toejam498 actually im 16. lol. Just be grateful I don't listen to Bieber + all the modern crap.

  • @tangypasta haha grateful

  • O_O

  • I could watch Shawn Lane play 24/7. So much style and finesse to go with all that speed. Maybe one in a billion musicians have all these traits to the extent that he did.

  • @Xanadude575

jazz fusion guitarists are the best !!!

  • Suffice to say that Lane was king of speed and technical ability, and to go further,it seemed like he was in 5th gear when he had 6. The other greats mentioned are amazing in their respected ways, that's why they're included in comparison discussions.

After reading every post, this thread certainly qualifies as a no-win for anyone,seriously...Lane is King, i highly doubt any artist mentioned would argue that point, and some have stated as much...good enough for me

  • Allan Holdsworth was indeed Shawn's idol. And they both do fusion differently, at least to MY ear. Shawn tends to play fast more often. Allan tends to play more unorthodox stuff. HOWEVER: That doesn't mean Shawn can't play stuff that will turn heads, or that Allan will rip your face off with blistering speed. As for BH and PG, he was great friends with both of them. BH was influenced heavily by Lane and vice versa. PG was heavily influenced by Lane, and vice versa. So let's just remember shawn!

  • Little-known fact: each of Shawn Lane's left-hand fingers had it's own brain in its respective knuckle.

  • i can't help but shit myself :| ....this guy had just proved me that everything is possible

  • Allan Holdsworth > Shawn Lane... Shawn Lane is an amazing guitarist so that should speak volumes.

  • please don't compare, just enjoy

  • Shawn Lane > Paul Gilbert... Paul Gilbert is an amazing guitarist so that should speak volumes.

  • doesnt really sound good

  • needs more technique

  • Jason had a similar level technique to Shawn did at 16 when Jason was 16, and given the nature of his most recent compositions, I reckon its safe to say he would have been extremely similar to Shawn.

  • @cerelilqt No, Shawn had a very special technique. Jason Becker was more of a sweep picker player, and was great at that. Both had great skill, but very different technique. But I would still give it to Shawn, much more original.

  • @kranen1

I agree JB is great but SH is a whole new level.

  • sounds like crap to me (hey sorry i hate fusion) but holy mother of fucking shit cunt, there aren't enough curse words to describe what i just saw, "insane" doesn't even come close to describe what this man can do on a guitar

  • @felphero

    Check out hardcase

Has a riff that many rock/metal bands would've killed for if thats what you're into, and it still maintains lane's style

    \

  • @crazyboyxx

okay, i will name some of the genres buckethead plays and you match the amount with genres shawn lane plays.

buckethead: avant-garde, bluegrass, new age, spanish classical, rock, noise rock/noise metal (drone metal), the blues, funk, ambient, and industrial.

  • @GoodMetalFTW you don't think Shawn could play in any of those styles? Just because BH plays some songs that are in different genres doesn't mean he's great at them. I'm sure he'd admit he's no pro when it comes to playing flamenco, or the blues. he's just messing around in those styles and having fun with it. Shawn could do that too; he just preferred to blend them all and create his own style, as opposed to fitting his tunes into specific genres.

  • @alspageddi

he could probably play most of them, but he never did. also, buckethead hardly ever plays the blues. he does occasionally, and when he does it's good, but he hardly ever plays it so it's hard to tell how good he really is at it.

  • Shawn Lane and Jason Becker are untouchable...

  • @otherrandomhero Do you honestly think the first time Cooley grabbed a guitar, at whatever age, he just started to shred? lol come on now...Even freakin Usain Bolt had to crawl at some age right? See if you can figure that out...

  • Does anyone have the balls to say Shawn isnt the best player in history? doubtful...

  • @Timmonsec There's really no "Best player in history", that's very much a subjective decision. However, I think it's safe to say that few will ever reach such a prowess of combining speed and beauty that Shawn could.

  • @garylucero1 lol ya thats what everyone says who cant play fast. It is like saying "Heyyy I have a ferrari but...err..i cant drive it through town because speed limit is 35mph....am gonna have to walk home.." Of course shredders can play slow, silly boy.

  • @SaintsCheat Rusty Cooley can't

  • I actually laughed of amazment!

    I was like,"Hahaha oh SH*T!! :D"

  • cooley>lane

  • @laxdude67 Cooley's great, but no way man.

  • @laxdude67 type in "shawn lane tribute" into search. its a tribute video with quotes from the most mental guitarists, including an interview with rusty describing shawns playing as impossible. Love rusty, but cant agree with being better than Shawn. Just my opinion

  • @laxdude67

fail. rusty cooley is excellent, but he is poop compared to shawn lane in every way except for sweeping. his phrasing, technicality, tone, knowledge, originality, speed, versatility etc. is far superior to rusty's. im dead sure rusty would agree that shawn is better. rusty is still amazing though, and i don't intend to diss on him.

  • speed is not everything is much more dificult to play very slow with a very very slow tempo

  • speed is not everything is much more dificult to play very slow

  • The guy with the bass, look like a pedophile.

  • @SweeetPicker fucking right man

  • PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sad ):

  • The reason why Buckethead is so much like Shawn Lane is because Shawn taught Buckethead how to play guitar for awhile

  • Shawn Lane's fast playing is cleaner than Buckethead's. While I love the abstract music of the Bucket, and i pretty well don't give a fuck who is faster, that's my opinion

  • what song is this?

  • Sporty beard, amazing speed and skill.

  • you know what i hate ? when people try to compare buckethead to shawn. STOP IT

  • Incredible!!

  • Kingding6, that is blatantly false...

  • no, its blatantly right

  • wow, 6 vidoes in a row, an argument about buckethead. Grow up youtube community

  • i wonder what kind of drugs shawn used to like

im guessing uppers hence is crazy speed...

  • I used to think some things are impossible...Then I found Shawn Lane

  • @TheWhocares233

    I know that feeling!

  • @TheWhocares233 there still impossible cause no one can do them BUT shawn lane.........LOL

  • my favourite Shawn Lane tune is "Esperanto"

    its just perfect

  • I swear this guy was put on this planet to punish musicians. I am a musician and an avid fan and listen to Shawn Lane almost every day. Still, I am always blown away.

  • This is a Lane video. Comment on the God's (Lane) video.

  • ugh, everytime i try to watch this, my computer jumps back 30 years in time

  • he is the hardest play for all time....thats for sure!i didnt have trouble with anyone before..

yngwie,macalpine,petruci,romeo,becker....learned very fast...but Lane is in another cathegory

with al di meola, john mclaughlin, frank gambale!

  • OMG...I've found the fastest guitar player ever, in fact it's been proven through an experment that Shawn Lane was the fastest guitar player ever at 18 notes per second...wow. It was in the July 2008 issue of Guitar World, by the way.

  • Lots of people can, though. I'm pretty sure I can, in my own way, but Shawn could play any 18 notes he wanted within any given second in any style or key (and on any guitar.) It's scary stuff.

  • He's not the fastest, but he is mega quick, and he can play at 20.5 NPS, at his fastest.

  • I would say Shawn was 100% the fastest when how clean it is comes into consideration. I have never heard any other guitarist play at those speeds as clean as Shawn did. His technique was perfect

  • Paul Gilbert is pretty damn close, and Allan and Guthrie are just about equal with Shawn.

  • I love all three of them but none of them play as fast and as clean as Shawn does. I should clear up that I was talking about picking every note. Gilbert isn't as fast but is jsut as clean. Allan is mostly a legato player and Guthrie is pretty damn close but I still don't think he can hit the same speeds as Shawn

  • Well, you're certainly right, his alternate picking speed and technique is unmatched, but his Legato is certainly not on Allan or Guthrie's level :P

  • hmmm...I dont know lol the big augmented 'alien' type licks he does are all legato alot of the time and they are at insane speeds with insane stretches. Also he had a unique approach of playing arpeggios without actually sweeping..just all hammering without picking on adjacent strings and he did that kind of thing at insane speeds. But then of course both guthrie and allan play some mindblowing shit using legato also.Either way all 3 are/were(RIPShawn)at insane levels lol

  • I totally agree.

  • gotta agree if ANYBODY comes close to shawn lanes technique and speed it'd be paul gilbert since they used to jam together a lot paul admits that he learned a lot from him

  • Not really, Paul is about as fast as Buckethead, which i think is around 15 nps with one hand. I think the closest would be rusty cooley, but he really plays crap.

  • FINALLY...some normal person that thinks that rusty guy playes a bunch of crap!

he is clean and he is fast but god danm it he playes some shit that i cant see the sense in it

  • Rusty cooley is definitly one of"those tasteless shredders..." but my god, he CAN play!

I don't think you can have an arguement about the fastest guitarists without mentioning bumblefoot, diego tella vega and the guy in the video called something like worlds fastest shredding...

Also, just looked up seal lane because I want to get a vigier guitar... and needless to say, I am dragging my jaw off the floor right now

  • Paul Gilbert dont come close

  • LOL!!!!

  • agreed but considering shawn is gone now rip paul gilbert is probably best we have left :(

  • PG is not better than anyone hes just has his own style. I dont think you can compare musicians thats just my opinion

  • true true that's what makes all the big "shredders" unique in their own aspects shawn lane for instance was known for his wide intervals and incredible speed. paul gilbert is known for string skipping and the list goes on. i'd say none at least technique wise compare to shawn lane. there are guys who can tackle playing as fast as shawn but none that i've heard at least can compose anywhere near as good as he did.

  • i don't deny buckethead is a versatile guitarist but shawn lane was revolutionary in his time and today even he's still recognized as one of the most terrifying guitarists who's ever lived. some have compared him to mozart and that's much bigger than being compared to say hendrix or something. bucketheads tapping and stuff i will not deny is incredibly talented but shawn lane's playing back in the 80s was far beyond what buckethead can do today i'm certain of that of course that's my opinion

  • i disagree and so would a lot of people not out of respect because he's dead like you might think but dudes like michael angelo batio rusty cooley paul gilbert buckethead and many others consider shawn lane to be the greatest guitarist who they've ever come in contact with hell steve vai stopped playing in the middle of a show just to record shawn playing he was that blown away

  • lol you obviously havnt heard much shawn lane. 80s power ballads?! :0

I love BH but technique wise he has nothing on Lane. BH himself has said that. Just search "Shawn Lane Guitar and Drum Solo" and you'll see. And search "Aga of the Ladies" and then tell me how limited Shawn was. Honestly limited in style is one of the most inaccurate descriptions of Lane you could ever give. Between his solo albums and his work with Jonas Hellborg he showed immense versitility. His improv's are way beyond BH.

  • @Gigglebooster you're an idiot. go take your ignorant arguments to a buckethead video.

  • In fact you'll find an awesome performance of Age if you search "Aga Of The Ladies Excerpt (Shawn Lane)"

  • ever heard his vinikryam brother stuff? def not power ballad. most of his music other than his solo albums are jazz fusion psychedelic indian sounds.... amazing player

  • @Gigglebooster

Buckethead's one of my favs. He has some great tunes. But there's no question that Shawn Lane's technique (speed and note/tone shaping) was far superior. Buckethead was humbled by him and i think quoted as saying something like "He's the best, but more importantly a good person". As far as music is concerned, that's completely subjective. It took me a while to get into some of Shawn's stuff, but his melodies have come to be some of the most beautiful and creative i've ever heard.

  • How is their no question in this, Buckethead is just as fast if not faster if you count his 8 finger nubbing and is completely flawless as Lane was, so please tell me how Lane is far superior? And yeah BH idolized Lane, he is a great guitarist, and he's not gonna say that he's better than his idol.

  • @Gigglebooster

notes per second is such a useless/silly statistic when it comes to guitar or music. That being said i believe someone did a note per second study and buckethead was way down on the list (something like 13-14 nps? still absurdly fast). You can easily find no-name players on youtube who are equally as fast.

at the end of the day, speed isn't what makes bigb or lane appealing to me. My favorite pieces or sections of peices from come from slow(er) moving melodies and phrasing.

  • Wow somone completely missed the point of my post. He said that technically shawn lane was "far superior" to buckethead, I replied with how? They are just as fast, maybe bh doesn't do legatto as quickly but he's probably the best in the world at 8 finger tapping and some of those runs easily are faster than any legatto Lane did. I agree speed doesn't even matter, but I was responding to him saying that Lane is far superior technically. They are both flawless so it's as very stupid comment.

  • @Gigglebooster

maybe my argument wasn't very salient. By stating that speed isn't important, i was implying shawn is unquestionably faster at picking and legato (19 NPS vs 15 picked), while attempting not to debase or cheapen buckethead's skill. Lane also employs a tremolo bar for subtle vibratto, bends, and dips. On the more subjective side, i feel lane's note shaping is superior. i can only recommend giving powers of ten (both studio/live) and tritone fasc. many serious listens.

  • @DeathZeroTolerance Don't mind giggle booster he trolls videos all the time he is like a bug than you can't seem to find and you want to kill it.

  • @Gigglebooster

ive seen better at 8 finger tapping, notably dave celentano, adam fulara and a couple others

im not taking anything away from buckethead though

  • @eleph4nt

  • @Gigglebooster

If you think buckethead is as fast as shawn lane then you havent heard enough of either of them my friend.

  • @Crazyguitarman1991 I love them both I dont know why people always argue over this stuff.....Both shawn and buckethead thought each other were incredible guitarist....and good friends. were gona make an album together if you all want to look up "shawn lane talks about buckethead"....also buckethead can play just as fast as shawn lane....and laggato as fast....check out "buckethead solos with primus"....bout 48 seconds in....his laggato is unbelievable as well as shawns

  • @silkstringz

no, shawn is faster. the thing about buckethead is that he sounds super fast, but in terms of actual nps there are much faster. the fact that buckethead can play how fast he does with distractions like a mask on his face, a bucket on his head, and no fret markers is amazing, but shawn lane is faster and more technical. buckethead plays more genres, but shawn has better phrasing, technique, and speed. speed doesn't matter anyways.

  • How do you come to this conclusion that his "speed and note/tone shaping" was far superior... no question? As I've said before buckethead is just as fast if not fast counting his 8 finger tapping runs... btw.. another technique in tapping that I feel buckethead is clearly better in, but again subjective. As well both of them are completely flawless, so how you come to the conclusion that there is no question lane is far superior is ridiculous to me.

  • @DeathZeroTolerance

    well said

  • Comment removed

  • I just don't think you should compare good musicians. Just enjoy them.

  • great point !

  • doesn't

  • @zappaelcrappa

nobody comes close, except Allan Holdsworth

  • @jmulma lol speed wise allan holdsworths got nothing on him.

  • @jmulma

Actually we should be talking about how Shawn Lane came close to Allan Holdsworth. Holdsworth is Shawn Lane's idol. So Shawn Lane would not think himself better than Holdsworth.

  • @shadowknight132 but in reality he was, at least I liked his music better than Holdsworth's.

  • @shadowknight132

that's because he is humble. i don't think anybody except for yngwie malmsteen would ever call themselves the best guitarist in the world. often times people don't know how good they are.

  • @zappaelcrappa Nobody comes close to that

  • @fenderoid1111 oh come on, not even close? Thats an unsinn

  • @TheEvilLike The only guitar player that is free frm all the stuff that restrains a guitarist is AH.I think players like Gilbert ,Howe,Govan ..... have trully aknowledged his unique talent. All players that i like and look up too

  • @zappaelcrappa

They were buds. Paul said, Shawn was the most terrifying guitarist ever

Paul however does indeed "come close" ;-)

  • @zappaelcrappa

no one comes close. but paul is great

  • @zappaelcrappa I'm a huge Shawn Lane fan, but I have to say... Paul's ability to furiously alternate pick those annoying, stretchy and big string skipping licks CLEANLY is amazing. But then again, these guys can't be compared. Mostly because their level of understanding, skill and control they have over that instrument is so far above the clouds we can't even see what's going on.

  • @zappaelcrappa doesn't*

  • personaly....i dont think anyone in this planet can play the sick lick video....you 100% have seen it

legato and picking string skiping diminished and augmented..

  • 20.5? How does one play half a note?

  • I guess he was sloppy O_O

  • he didn't quite finish the note in one second.

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha thats funny bog.

  • lol, the irony of the last COMMENT.

  • no comment.....incredible!!!!!
