  • HAHAHA man this is so weird. Robin Williams is perfect for the role though that's for sure.

  • @sk8nboomer900 This introduced me to Williams and then I saw Mork and Mindy.

  • @videozfann - I LOVE this film!

  • Bizarro...

  • One of the most underated movies of my childhood!

  • Robin Williams Should have gotten an OSCAR for Popeye... ABSOLUTELY...

  • 22 people didn't eat their spinach.

  • to be or not to be... who's askin'?! i LOVE that! ;D!

  • He's also High on Spinnach again.....

  • 0:24 Popeye:"Careful there don't Rustle me Fat-ass!!" lol

  • @ltjerryl He says "Careful there, don't rustle me feathers."

  • ALL DAY ...ALL NIGHT ............

  • funny song man

  • Thumbs up if you think they should have had Eugene The Jeep in this movie!

  • @doobiesmoke15 He was cut cause the effects would have cost too much. Eugene's purpose was given to Swee'pea so that he could find the treasure at the end.

  • i'm digging the huge forearms

  • thanks for posting the lyrics

  • to be or not to be who's asking? i LOVE that ;D!

  • Big cheer at the end "Wooohoohoo!" lol

  • This film is considered garbage. Why? It's production and set design is terrific. The music is great, and everyone was cast 100% perfectly. Not only that, but it pulled off the old cartoon violence and gags flawlessly with sophistication. To me, it's the best cartoon turned live action. Most are usually awful but this one pulled it off. To me, this is a wonderful film.

  • 0:00 Fucking lemons?

  • @SilverBlade784

    Sucking Lemons

  • jack nicholson nailed the joker, robin williams nailed popeye...done deal!

  • I can't understand how this movie received any criticisms. The actors were casted perfectly, the director and writers also did the characters justice. My questions are, why does Robin Williams' skin color look funny? Its kind of yellow in some scenes like the one here and a pinkish/whitish color in some other scenes. What does the word fui mean, olive oyl uses this word a few times in the movie including in a scene where ( just before) she kisses (pecks really) popeye on the lips?

  • @hippypeace 'Phooey'. phoo·ey/ˈfo͞oē/

Exclamation: Used to express disdain or disbelief.

  • @jedizero Thanks, that was puzziling my mind.

  • my fav movie when i was a kid

  • love it:)

  • I agree Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall were PERFECT for playing Popeye and Olive Oyl! :D This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and it stays so true to the cartoon which also makes it so great! And baby Swee'Pea is soooooo adorable!!!! <3

  • THey picked the perfect person to play Olive Oil.

  • I love this movie as much as Robin Williams hates it.

The movie is wonderful (in my opinion) but Robin didn't like playing a real-life cartoon character and not being able to be himself, except for muttering opinions and one-liners.

  • great homage to the great cartoon

  • Why hasn't this shit been sampled for a hip hop song yet lol. Camron this has your name all over it.

  • I love this movie I'm 15 now and love it that's my favourite song and he actually looks good with blond hair and big arms when it comes down to it Robbin Williams is and always be the best popeye you rock Robbin and love your movies and your singing voice your amazing :D xxx

  • I love this movie..it brings back memories

  • ……. leading lady & man, Shelley Duvall & Robin Williams respectively, were/are POIFICK for their roles as Olive Oyle & Popeye … Beyond awesome ~ (•8-D

  • popeye is waesome

  • Robin Williams is the best Popeye!!!!!!!

  • 418 ppl are what they are godammit!!!

  • It's strange to watch this and think that the baby or babies that played Sweetpea are now in their 30's. I remember seeing this movie in the theaters when i was 6 years old. I'm now 37. Man, how time flies.

  • Hey mom, this one is for you. Buddy Holloway LMAO

  • wow this took me back

  • they really did a great job at casting. olive oil in this movie looks just like olive in the cartoon

  • Jeez, I was frikkin' OBSESSED with this movie when I was about 3-5 years old. My parents are it on CED and I was watching it almost every single day for a certain stretch during that time.

  • My happy song, drags me out of the deepest depressigan.

  • hahah need to make a hip hop version now

  • I was 7 years old when I saw this movie ;-) love it hahaha !!! Now I'm 37 years old and still enjoy it !!?;-)

  • ROBIN WILLIAMS IS A WONDERFUL ACTOR!!! ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS I HAVE SEEN...SHELLY DUVAL IS A WONDERFUL ACTRESS AS WELL!!!

  • Robin William should of got an oscer for this

think about it could any other actor of playd a live action popeye as well

  • Words to live by, I am what I am.

  • ''Oh I know Doctors, but I knows Im losing me patience!!!'' lol best line in my opinion

  • great film

  • I absolutely 100% without a doubt love this movie and this part!!! My life today is still influenced by this movie.

  • Robin Williams is a master actor.

  • So, wait. He's a Yam?

  • "What am I? What am I?

    I YAM WHAT I YAM!!!"

  • Wait, so Wimpy has money to bet on a horse race, but he can't buy a burger?

  • its Popeye, the Sailor MAn!!!

  • Always cheers me up, just wish singing it didn't get me so many looks.

  • There's no character Robin Williams can't play!

  • Just watched this yesterday on tv.

Stayed up until 1:30 am to watch.

    Glad I did!

  • "i aint no doctor. but i knows im losin me patience... i aint no lawyer... but i knows what law suits me...i aint no phsyiscyst... but i knows what matters"

    gotta love popeye XD

  • this movie made me love movies

  • Popeye vs goku, I'd book it =)

  • @cenoevil54 I wouldn't. I already know who'd win.

  • Best worst movie/musical EVER made.

  • Popeye's been reading a LOT of porn.

  • @BricktownBubba reading?

  • it would be a perfict transition from movie to cartoon if they left out the music.

  • The movie is kind of ridiculous but the importance of popeye and what he stand for is the reason he became such a popular character. "I am what I am" -- It doesnt get any realer than that!

  • "sucking lemons"

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen -

When she asked if she should bet on 'Sucking Lemons,' Swee' Pee whistled to indicate "yes."

  • sorry, but is she saying "fucking lemons?"

  • @overdriveSandwich

Take a cold shower, will ya?

  • y did they make a movie of this lmao

  • At the beginning.."fucking lemmings"?

  • Hey, Popeye! If you were a barnacle, it wouldn't be so bad! For one, they are endowed, and live the rest of their lives eating, sleeping and uhh.. Well, it's what they do in that there brothel you're in, except it'd be free for life. XP

  • what in the... I don't even...

  • my first hero

  • 1:30! The music explodes all of a sudden and gets very hairy, and Robin Williams is just a righteous (seemingly) Irish fireball of doom. The ultimate. Probably the best moment in the score.

  • for some reason, i love this song. i can't even describe it. i can definately relate to it. i am who i am, what i was born and always will be. it's something unique inside me and no one can take that away from me or stop it

  • They should have got the guy who plays Joey from Full House to play popeye instead of Robin Williams.

  • @NuggetsMc

David Coulier voices Popeye in Robot Chicken.

  • hahahhaahahha

  • this irl version of popeye kind of scares me

  • Comment removed

  • For MARK :D

  • LOL! All the money they spend on hollywood blockbusters and this is THE MOST FAITHFUL comic to movie adaptation... EVER

  • @SWEP2AOTC2002 I'm sorry, I disagree with you. Popeye isn't even wearing the right clothes from the cartoon. And he's baldy, not a ginger or blond guy ( may be he was but he's present state is bald) :)

  • I am a female. Slightly before my love for the Disney channel and the sliming on Nikelodeon's brand new channel, (when I was 4/5/6) I would ask over and over to watch this movie. This scene was especially memorable to me. I love that I loved this movie and still love it. I have passed it on to my 3 kids...You should too!

  • i yam what i yam and i do not giva damn

  • Nilsson was pure genius at making catchy tunes cus 30 years later they still get stuck in my head.

  • Harry Nilsson's style of music just fit this film so perfectly :-)

  • @herbertzohl

So sad that Nilsson is no longer with us......He couldn't half carry and write a tune....SADLY MISSED. i just hope he gets the credit he deserves someday....Thought he was absolutely brilliant...

  • I yam what I yam! ;-)

  • Is the actress who playes Olive Oyl the one who is in The Shining, they look the exact same.

  • @TheSmithCro

    Yes, Shelley Duvall

  • @mortalcottonslasher1 Thanks, I had a feeling.

  • @TheSmithCro , yes it is Shelly Duvall who was in both movies. in fact she was filiming the Shining and Popeye at the same time.

  • @TheSmithCro yep same actress. Shelly Duvall

  • Wendy, darling, light of my life,im not gonna hurt you...Im just gonna bash your brains in...bash them right the fuck in! hahaha!

  • Only Robin williams could pull off a part like this!

  • Thats Harry Nilsson, the movie's composer, playing the piano. he also cameo's as Clem, the guy playing the banjo in the song "everything is food"

  • @Doug19752533 Van Dyke Parks on piano, who also arranged Nilsson's music. Doug Dillard played banjo on the soundtrack, so might be him in the cameo. Definitely Parks, though.

  • @GayleMI whoever played, they were almost beatlesque meets broadway. I miss this.

  • @makisunn Agreed. Even though Nilsson's voice may have been shot, he could still write some great tunes.

  • True this is an absurd film. I bet Robert Altman thought when he got handed the script; "This is a totally absurd concept for a movie, may as well make it as totally absurd as possible" Hence it being a musical.

  • So, when's he going to come out with Popeye 2?

  • Hollywood can remake 'Popeye' as many ways that they see fit but this one pretty nailed it on the head as far as getting the characters right. There are many who didn't like this version but it sticks with the right fans!

  • @CrimsonBaby2007 it seemed more in-tune with the original comics than anything else, my one complaint came more with the violence, didn't seem like there was enough as odd as that sounds. I liked the movie quite a bit and Robin Williams did a good job in this role, though it's hard to humanize someone as iconic as Popeye.

  • ...did he steal the baby?

  • Comment removed

  • great movie, i always sang this growing up

  • 0:35

Robin as Popeye was an excellent idea

    I liked Geezil, too.

Anyone know what cartoons Geezil appeared in? He's one of my favorites, even though I've only seen him in the movie, & in "Wimpy the Moocher"

  • I can't find the End credits to this movie anywhere

  • And Shelley from "the Shining" as Olive, BRILLIANT!!!

  • corny as fuck

  • @zimmcat This movie is a masterpiece, as well as the Popeye characters and cartoons from yesteryear. I find these types of artform far more valuable than a van gogh or picasso. One must appreciate the finer things in life.

  • This movie was wayyyyy too American for Europe and Hollywood when it came out!

  • @MarkLeavenworth: Popeye is all-American. He was the first cartoon character with grit to have a statue dedicated to him. He existed before Charlie Brown, Mickey, Bugs, and the rest of his contemporaries.

  • "WELL I AINT NO PHYSICIST, BUT I KNOW WHAT MATTERS..." lololololololololololoo- LUV POPEYE!!!!ii!!!

  • They should make a new Popeye cartoon and have this cast back to voice all the character's. Especially Robin as Popeye.

  • Not Just robin, I don't think you could of found more perfect actors for the entire movie. Shame it didn't do better, it really captured the feel of the cartoon.

  • robin made a great popeye

  • @TMan5636 HE IS POPEYE!!!!

  • I ain't no physikist but I know what mattas !

  • @jsr121689 This from a guy who loves Pee Wee Herman videos.

  • @LKDisney ...What's wrong with that dude?

  • @LKDisney: Paul Ruebens was unjustly accused. He collects porn as an ART and got caught as himself--and NOT Pee-Wee Herman--at an adult multiplex. All other accounts are the media putting things way out of proportion.

  • "I YAM WHOT I AM!!"

    Wow!... XD

  • "I aint no doktor, but I'm losin' me patience" LOL

  • I find this part of the film is oddly symbolic of audiences reactions towards the movie. This movie is so weird, so strange, so outlandish, and so completely and utterly different that audiences tended just to give it the baffled glare you see the gamblers directing towards Popeye in the latter part of the song.

Popeye might be a tad bit strange, a tad bit unconventional, a tad bit unfitting and akward. But at the end of the day, he's Popeye, and he is what he is.

    I adore this stupid film.

  • What you said...

  • @IndianaDylan I think you summed it up perfectly. It is an utterly wierd, absurdist movie....that's why I like it.

  • @IndianaDylan I totally agree I love this movie.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes!

  • The film set on which this movie was shot is still standing....It's in Malta. It is known as popeye's village.

    Everyone can visit.

  • wow really I love that set, I have been inspired by it my whole life.

  • Sweet i'm going.

  • This film got really panned when it came out. It does come off really strange, but those early Fleisher Brother Poppeye cartoons were sometimes a bit weird. I think it is true to its oddness, and it still does the Popeye thing just fine.

  • popeye can wear a sailor suit, carry a baby, dance, eat veggies, do coreography, and sing, and still have more balls than chuck norris and sly stelone combined.

  • @mattybock true!

  • Gosh dern right !

  • I *love* this movie. It's a childhood favorite, just like Anne to me lol. I yam what I yam!

  • i think robin williams fits popeye perfectly. he got his voice, personality and style just right

i nfact i think robin should voice the new popeye if they make a new cartoon

  • It is too bad the didn't have Eugene the Jeep in the movie. All the other major characters seem to be there.

  • doobiesmoke15: Well, Alice The Goon wasn't present either. The reason being was that neither character was specifically remembered by viewers, nevermind that they played small bits--if anything--during the musical version of the Segar canon, which the film is based on.

  • this movie is sooo weird but good lol

  • Does Popeye have Identity issues?

  • I loved this movie as a kid, but watching it as an adult now it's really hard to sit through. Guess the magic is just gone.

  • THOUSANDAlRE the movie has magic, you've just lost your own magic.

  • guess that's one way of looking at it.

  • i aint's phisi-kist.

  • I bought this movie and my dad told me that he wouldn't have wasted money on it.

  • how can he say that?? this movie is the best!!

  • ppl can say what they want, but this movie is AWESOME :) Robin Williams is AWESOME :)

  • I love shelly duvall. she is so talented and beautifull.

  • I agree that she may know how to act, but beautiful? She has to be one of the homliest women in show business in my opinion. Just suprised that someone actually thinks she's "beautiful".

  • Why don't you put up a photo so people can judge your looks? I never understood why someone would make such a statement. I never stoop that low by commenting on a persons appearance and ask, why do you?

On a more positive note: I saw this movie when it first came out at the age of nine, popeye was my favorite character! ms. duvall gives a lovely, whimsical performance and has a unique beauty ,very pretty lady.

  • You are so right. I apologize for such a comment.

  • Oh I love Shelly Duvall! She was in the movie The Shining with Jack Nicholson too, remember that? LOVE her!

  • robin williams is so funny and a great insperation. He is halarious in mrs doubtfire.email me back and say what you think about him ;.

  • I like pop-eye. My dad use to say that I yam stuff all the time growing up.

  • Why cant it just be a fun movie?

  • i love this and popeye was real no lie so i yam what i yam cause thats all im mashon

  • that movie was classic for its time.now u maybe to young to remember it or u don't know about musicals.

  • that may be but im too young to know how the early popeye cartoons were, they were not as dramatic as this movie, they should have made it more of a comedy than a musical. popeye was not meant to be a musical

  • You know, the oldest (and best) Popeye cartoons regularly had songs in them. In fact, Popeye's first animated appearance opened with him walking around on a ship deck singing his theme song.
