Ryu is Akuma's son. Gouken would have brought Ryu (still a child) to an old man, master of martial arts, to make sure that he does not follow the same road as his father, Gouki. That is to prevent him from being submerged by the dark side of Hado (one of the most dangerous techniques, Hado was created by assassins). In this anime, it is indirectly said that Akuma is the father of Ryu.

u see what happened in the games polt is akuma used shun goku satsu on gouken, that attack ripps the opponents soul apart, but what gouken did was he removed his soul from his body meaning he was only severly commatosed, so much so that his heart rate was unreadable so he was classed as dead

Ryu is not Akuma's son. Akuma is the brother of Gouken, ken and ryu master. Akuma is tryin to get ryu to succumb to his dark hadou that he has inherent thats why he shows so much attention towards ryu

This movie seems to focus only on Ryu's storyline, but I agree. We do get a Ken cameo appearance at 2:29 if you look carefully to the right though. And, of course, there's Sakura. ^__^;
