Colloquialisms vary around the world, Birdsnest is probably the most common as it's easy to picture, backlash is another.....in my neck of the words we call it a "Frap-Up" or "frapping". people think you keep your finger on the spool when casting.. when actually that makes it worse! you have to throw it with confidence and let your thumb off at 45 degrees then stop the spool when it hits the water or it will keep spinning n will cause backlash. Let your thumb completely off !!
so when u cast u use the brakes instead of ur thumb? cos on my baitcaster u use ur thumb to stop back lashes.. and i just bought a cheap multi plier..
@kruppcody1 you dont keep your finger on the spool on a multiplier when casting, by doing that you are restricting the flow of line, thumb on when you free the spool, when you reach the desired angle release your thumb, you should only apply your thumb again once the lead hits the ground or the water, then that stops the reel birds nesting.You imagine keeping your thumb on the spool as your leader knot rips it to bits.caimingchang is correct 100%

Actually it is a pendulum cast, the pendulum action of rod and line before cast is the gaveaway there ! and yes you can use this for normal fishing thats what its for......In the UK and western Europe this is standard practice.
