I'm confused about the instrument playing the main melodic line here. Is it Jordi Savall's viola da gamba, or a violin or viola played by some other musician in Hesperion XXI?
i'm not expert, but I would say it's a viola da gamba playing the main melody because at around 5:28 the trill doesn't sound like a trill that could be done on a non fretted bowed instrument....but that's just me
I like to hear grindcore my father has showed me this song and it was beautifoul 3month i searched this song ive didnt found it now ive found it and its great
PS: I admire the effort of Jordi to bring a live so many unknown ancient music, but he should to play more the more known pieces. It's like Koopman who pass 23h a day of life to continue is biggest dream... all the Bach cantatas. But there are so many wonderfull music who deserves better interpretations!
I think I have to disagree with you there. I love Jordi Savall's work with obscure/unknown classical and renaissance pieces.
I don't really mind if he doesn't do some more well known pieces, mostly becuase I haven't liked his work on some more famous compositions, like his Brandenburgs or Art of the Fugue. I did like his "Eroica" symphony though.
Maybe I create a little misundertanding here. :) I admire Jordi of the rescue of lost music and some people forget that he helps in the formation of the best musicians that there are now days. For example, Rinaldo play the organ in his Monteverdi Vesperas, that still my favourite version. He did a great job in Requiem Mozart (The voice of Figueras doesn't feet but that's a case of love, not of Jordi's taste) and in the big works of Monteverdi or Biber.
About his Brandenburg concertos, Art of the Fugue or Handel's Water music, i see them like a important step for the beautifull interpretations that we can listen nowdays.
When I listen the Canon and Gigue that you upload (Pachelbel) I run directly to the store! All the 17 works that are in this cd are unbelivable and this is the most beautifull version of this piece that I ever listen. Thank you!
Can I get this version on iTunes? If so who is the artist?

This is one of the correct way to play Greesleeves.
This poor ballad massacred up to make it a Christmas carol.

It's Jordi Savall playing a treble viol.
HARMONICO101 2 years ago
@ErinnaWeatherwax it's viola da gamba soprano, that sounds a little bit like a violin
