thanks for the video! I've just started mic'ing my kit and doing some recording. I find that my snare mic really gets in the way. I always catch it when coming off the hi-hat back onto the snare, or when going from my snare to my first Tom. I think this may be because I have my kit set low.
Can anyone take a quick look at one of my videos and maybe offer to advice. i think i may have them too close to the rim too. Thanks a lot :)
To mic a drum set and get a good sound starts with the drums themselves...they gotta sound good for recording (not meccessarily live). a church could sound AWESOME...but could also produce lots of phase problems. its important to use the polarity switch, by toggling the polarity of the overheads and snare in different combinations to find what has the least phase cancellation.
Credit is due, the mics are 180 out of phase, yes. But the button you are referring to is all too often mislabeled a 'Phase' switch. It in fact does not manipulate phase in any way, since it does not deal with a time relationship between waveforms. It is a polarity switch. I mistakenly wrote that the mics were out of polarity...that would have dealt with an electrical problem. thanks for correcting me
isnt a church probably the worst place for recording? it must have a HUGE amount of undesied reflections... i always record in a 10squaremeter and i get nice sounding drums
@mattlhc Granted, you may have a shallow point, but mixers have phase reverse buttons that compensate for these kinds of problems. You fix the problem by pressing the phase reverse button. The mics are 180-degrees out-of-phase! It's not difficult to understand the difference between polarity and phase! I'm just trying to help people get better results from their gear.
Well...there is that :-) If you read the book that this comes from, you'll see that I always start at the source first, trying to make it clear that a bad instrument and an unskilled musician are the first problem.
Well...there is that :-) If you read the book that this comes from, you'll see that I always start at the source first, trying to make it clear that a bad instrument and an unskilled musician are the first problem.
You forgot to mention the most important part when recording drums, the drums. If your drums sound like poo, played by a poo drummer, it is impossible to get good sounding drums. The most expensive gear to the biggest rip off plug-ins cant change the fact that the drums will sound like crap. You could trigger or sample replace but then it'll just sound like a cheap drum machine which defeats the purpose of you recording tha drums in the first place.
hey dude thaks for this tips...im a beginer in recording but i've been playing for 7 years ...pd : your snare is a bit out of tone in one side you should fix it playing every area between the scrws and try to make them all sound =
seriouslly presonus fucking rocks... it the best audio software i've used studio one that is... i still record my audio in pro tools ..i havnt figured out how to select a section of the track in presonus and get it to plat or cut it without moving the whole track off time but umm.. i'm using it to learn about mastering luv it luv it ... good stuff pre sonus....you got a winner with this one
...does it make sense to use expander/gates to isolate the sound of say the bass drum so you can eq the bass drum without having the background sounds getting in the way??
@calvinlove0 of course. but if you use a gate, listen to the track together with the overheads louder, so you can hear if the gate missed a bassdrum.
2nd Tip: Use a gate with an inbuild eq-sidechain. then you can easily find the most bassy frequence of your bassdrum, which helps the gate to decide "what is the bassdrum" and "what not".
Phasing is important, listen carefully and you can tell that the sound is fuller when phasing is correct, It makes a big difference even when hooking up stereo speakers, if the phasing is wrong it sounds weak. People that try and tell me Im wrong have bad hearing I think lol
Best drum sound I've gotten is with just four mics: Heil PR40 for the bass drum, SM57 at 45 degrees to the snare and a couple of ribbon mics, one about 2 feet over and behind the rhythm cymbal (aiming at the hi-hat) and the other about 3 feet directly over the snare (aiming straight down). Awesome rich sound.
@maximum512 It's a full range dynamic microphone, AKA really good quality recording. You can pretty much use it for anything on your drum set, if you have the money, which I don't.
"Any time you have two mics that point to each other they are out of phase. So always invert the phase of the bottom mic".
That is just not true. It's an old misunderstanding. Every time you have MORE THEN ONE mic recording a SAME sound source they will be out of phase. Don't matter if they are pointed at each other or not. What you have to do is try to select what frequency will be cancelled for your benefit, you do this by increasing or decreasing the distance between the mics.
I have 1 question, when i try to record i cant hear whats going on on the headphones while i play the drum, and if i put the sound to loud it starts to distort!! can anyone help me?
phasing is caused by the magnets in the mics are to close then bind together causing cancellation. to avoid keep mics to a minimum and not so close together.
If two mics are picking up a signal from the same source but one is further away than the other, or if they are on opposite sides of a moving diaphragm (drum skin, speaker cone etc) they can become partially or completely out of phase, which will cause frequency cancellation. two identical signals in perfect phase will be twice as loud, while the same signals 180 degrees out of phase will cancel out completely and result in silence. Put mics as close together as possible, or use the 3:1 rule.
@evenbass Well, imagine the graphic of a sound wave... the first semi-cicle goes on the positive side of the timeline and the second semi-cicle goes on the bottom side of the time line, together, it's a cicle... The mic on phase starts like a I just said, but the bottom starts with the negative semi-cicle, so in order to have the same phase, you have to invert the bottom one
Great clip... very imformative... thanks! Is it possible to chain up 2 PreSonus FP10's in order to get 16 XLR inputs using just 1 firewire port? many thanks again!
I´m recording now, and we are using two mics on the Bass Drum, one for the click, and one with the normal range.. One normal and one inside the bass drum..
Try it out, it´s tricky but the final effect is great..
@jmc2219 Yes it surely does. I am using a Firepod (it is now called FP-10) and it works perfectly with Win7. I had to do a driver and framework update from the Presonus website and now it is flawlessly working. The only thing, seems like my firewire card and wireless are not compatible to be used at the same time with the Firepod. I just disable my wireless card when I need to record.
thanks for posting... great. i just got the little tiny presonus box and it works great. i like their stuff so far. . . plans to upgrade in the future!
i know this sounds stupid but does anyone know if the mics to records drums are the same ones used to amplify sounds when u want a louder sound live ?
They can be. It's up to the sound engineer to decide if close miking or room mics/overheads are better.
Listen to the drum sounds on The Who's "Who's Next." I happen to think that's one of the best classic recorded drum sounds I've ever heard (Glyn Johns produced those recordings) and they only used 4 mics: (1) snare, (1) bass drum, (1) next to the last floor tom top head facing across the kit to the hi hat and (1) above the kit, 40 inches over the snare drum facing the bass drum pedal.
@alahad To my knowledge, yes, they are. It all depends where the mic is connected. During live shows (for example, the drummer's mics during a concert) are mic'd as usual, and they go into the mixer as they would. However, they get fed into the amps directly, rather than into a computer. The "output" isn't the headphones this way. The "output" is the speakers to the audience. I'm pretty sure you can even do that with things like Rock Band USB-type mics. :P
would the sound become clearer and louder or just louder ? im not sure whether its the mixer or the mics which gives that tight sound with less overtones etc etc
@aaronalwines It's being run through a mixer, so it's clearer and more compressed right there. The only difference is the final touches on the computer aren't being added, as it's being done live. Mic --> Mixer --> Amps/Speakers. Mic picks up sound, mixer...mixes/condenses/compresses sound, amps/speakers are the output.
if anyone could give me a tip or two that would be great. i'm just using my interface with cubase le 4 and i need to record seperate instruments on a few seperate tracks at once. is there any specific way i'm supposed to set up the inputs in program itself. any advice would be greatly appreciated. you might even receive a crisp high five.
If it works like in cubase3 (and i think it does), then you have to go to VST Connections (F4), and there set up all the input buses that You want to use and chose for each coresponding input on your interface.
Then, on each track you just have to select input you want for it, arm it, and have fun recording :)
No, it just happens randomly during recording. It's not because the input is peaking, it just happens when the computer can't handle that much information. I have one with only two inputs, and it only works on my newest computer which has much higher specs than presonus says it needs.
@MichaelBradus Incorrect. In digital recording a click and pop is from having the level set to HOT. If the computer isn't strong enough to run the software it will just drop channels or freeze.
Does anyone know why I can't import every drum track from the firepod to magix music maker? I have the 8 mic firepod but I can't record all the tracks at the same time someone help please!
I need help can u help me plz? When i go to the website, i click on download theres so many programs to download i dont no which i to get can u tell me which 1?
FireWire is the Sound output, the support of 96kHz will be destroyed if you put the FirePod tru a 3.5mm Jack in your Card, only poor 22kHz same with the Mixer ;-)
I REEALLLYYY need some help!!! I'm recording my band over the next 2 days and I am using a Yamaha MW12 CX mixer and Cubase AI 4 Software. Could some PLEEEASSSEE tell me how to recording the drums so that each drum (kick, snare, toms, etc) is on a separate track while I am recording with all the mics miced up.
Close mic each thing individually that you want to mic up? Then just 2 overheads and you should be sorted. I thought it was simple. Ill help you with other stuff if you want?
That's a really nifty little technique at 6:25 - 6:35. Lemme get this right. He was using the spike in frequency volume to identify the frequency that was the source of the ringing and then doing the exact opposite, nearly mutiing that frequency? I think that's what he was doing.
No offense intended toward whomever produced this video, but that drumset at around 4:00 sounds really terrible. The kick drum is flabby, the snare is pitched too high and pong-y (sounds like a kettle), the tom is too tight, and the cymbals are too thin. I can't hear that set working for any kind of music; it just sounds lousy.
all i what to know is how to record on my laptop i gotta mic input which i plug my effect pedal directly in, the cleans nice but the distortion is deafening. can any1 help me record distortion, i lookd at these amps that are downloadable are they any good.
iv got all these projects but nowhere to record them.
do not always invert phase, trust your hear insted... wich sound you like the best? sometimes in metal espescially i would not invert the phase to get only the tight hit of the snare. + i don't need to use an EQ on the snare to cut its low end that inverting the phase would emphasize. Anyways use your hear there is no rule!
Heres a question, how many mics do you think are necessary to get a pretty good sound (not professional, but good enough to the listeners). i was thinkin around 4 to 6: 2 overheads, 1 kik, and 1 snare. or is it really important to mic the bottom of the snare and the toms?
Depending on the drum beat complexity and the desired effect. The most natural sound would be achieved by placing 2 mics only. But you would need to wounder around, testing diffirent placements till you find the most desirable sweet spot. Have you evber heard about holophonic reacordings of drum sets?
DO NOT READ : A Girl named oliva was Sitting in her room, when she heard Crying in her closet. when she Opened the closet door she saw a little girl's Head on the Floor and her body chopped into peices. If you do NOT post this to 14 ppl, you will hear crying in your Closet and See a bloody head.

Does anybody know if the firestudio project will work on windows 7 ...32bit?...64bit?
jmc2219 2 years ago
@jmc2219 Yes it surely does. I am using a Firepod (it is now called FP-10) and it works perfectly with Win7. I had to do a driver and framework update from the Presonus website and now it is flawlessly working. The only thing, seems like my firewire card and wireless are not compatible to be used at the same time with the Firepod. I just disable my wireless card when I need to record.

i know this sounds stupid but does anyone know if the mics to records drums are the same ones used to amplify sounds when u want a louder sound live ?
aaronalwines 2 years ago
thx!!!
but the pro tools has it to?
and which one is better ( cubase or protools)
Juanjolead 2 years ago
They can be. It's up to the sound engineer to decide if close miking or room mics/overheads are better.
Listen to the drum sounds on The Who's "Who's Next." I happen to think that's one of the best classic recorded drum sounds I've ever heard (Glyn Johns produced those recordings) and they only used 4 mics: (1) snare, (1) bass drum, (1) next to the last floor tom top head facing across the kit to the hi hat and (1) above the kit, 40 inches over the snare drum facing the bass drum pedal.
agilblom 2 years ago
you use the same at home at studio and live...what differs is how you sync them(you do this at the mixer..)
julioalex922 2 years ago
yes, same mics except it goes into the PA system.

doesnt sound stupid at all... I also wanna know...
alahad 2 years ago
@alahad To my knowledge, yes, they are. It all depends where the mic is connected. During live shows (for example, the drummer's mics during a concert) are mic'd as usual, and they go into the mixer as they would. However, they get fed into the amps directly, rather than into a computer. The "output" isn't the headphones this way. The "output" is the speakers to the audience. I'm pretty sure you can even do that with things like Rock Band USB-type mics. :P
m0ns13ur 2 years ago
would the sound become clearer and louder or just louder ? im not sure whether its the mixer or the mics which gives that tight sound with less overtones etc etc
aaronalwines 2 years ago
@aaronalwines It's being run through a mixer, so it's clearer and more compressed right there. The only difference is the final touches on the computer aren't being added, as it's being done live. Mic --> Mixer --> Amps/Speakers. Mic picks up sound, mixer...mixes/condenses/compresses sound, amps/speakers are the output.
m0ns13ur 2 years ago
thanks alot for the info man ive been reading drum magazines and shit for ages nowhere it seems to explain these mechanics. thanks again !

but how much that console or that box for imput mics costs?

the FirePod, or FP10, runs for about $600, bundled with Cubase LE

could u record this stuff with Kristal?
justinsanesaid12 2 years ago
if anyone could give me a tip or two that would be great. i'm just using my interface with cubase le 4 and i need to record seperate instruments on a few seperate tracks at once. is there any specific way i'm supposed to set up the inputs in program itself. any advice would be greatly appreciated. you might even receive a crisp high five.
jesushenrychrist 2 years ago
If it works like in cubase3 (and i think it does), then you have to go to VST Connections (F4), and there set up all the input buses that You want to use and chose for each coresponding input on your interface.
Then, on each track you just have to select input you want for it, arm it, and have fun recording :)
If you want more info, then send me a message.

Ye brah.
MichaelBradus 2 years ago
isn't it simply peaking audio input?
adammurphy 2 years ago
No, it just happens randomly during recording. It's not because the input is peaking, it just happens when the computer can't handle that much information. I have one with only two inputs, and it only works on my newest computer which has much higher specs than presonus says it needs.
MichaelBradus 2 years ago
@MichaelBradus actually its probably the buffer level being too low
might also be youtube glitching out the playback, vid/aud is compressed..
Studio One Rules!
Axeman2006 1 year ago
@MichaelBradus Incorrect. In digital recording a click and pop is from having the level set to HOT. If the computer isn't strong enough to run the software it will just drop channels or freeze.

Does the FirePod connects directly in the audio card or first in the mixer , or maybe directly in the computer ?
And what other hardware do you use for recording drums except the FirePod (those in the church) ?
GishoDinev 2 years ago
FireWire is the Sound output, the support of 96kHz will be destroyed if you put the FirePod tru a 3.5mm Jack in your Card, only poor 22kHz same with the Mixer ;-)
katzenkrueger 2 years ago
So it goes thru what ?
GishoDinev 2 years ago
you can only connect your FirePod with your pc by FireWire cable, not instrument cables.

NeilMan1990 2 years ago
from the mixer what are you using ( an interface )?
brettypope 2 years ago
Close mic each thing individually that you want to mic up? Then just 2 overheads and you should be sorted. I thought it was simple. Ill help you with other stuff if you want?
UberPiroxsFriend 2 years ago
What mic is that at 3:02 ?
SolidLovin 2 years ago
That's a really nifty little technique at 6:25 - 6:35. Lemme get this right. He was using the spike in frequency volume to identify the frequency that was the source of the ringing and then doing the exact opposite, nearly mutiing that frequency? I think that's what he was doing.

i have really shitty mics, but my drum vids are recorded with a presonus firestudio, if anybody's curious.
prozack28 2 years ago
No offense intended toward whomever produced this video, but that drumset at around 4:00 sounds really terrible. The kick drum is flabby, the snare is pitched too high and pong-y (sounds like a kettle), the tom is too tight, and the cymbals are too thin. I can't hear that set working for any kind of music; it just sounds lousy.

do not always invert phase, trust your hear insted... wich sound you like the best? sometimes in metal espescially i would not invert the phase to get only the tight hit of the snare. + i don't need to use an EQ on the snare to cut its low end that inverting the phase would emphasize. Anyways use your hear there is no rule!
LittleNemoTheDreamer 2 years ago
His snare sucks... but thanks for the info!
Tdepp13 2 years ago
Did he just say when you point 2 mics at eachother they are "always" in phase? What a douche.

Heres a question, how many mics do you think are necessary to get a pretty good sound (not professional, but good enough to the listeners). i was thinkin around 4 to 6: 2 overheads, 1 kik, and 1 snare. or is it really important to mic the bottom of the snare and the toms?
jmc2219 2 years ago
My minimum for best quality is nine: kick, 3Toms, hihat, 2Overheads, top and bottom snare. Not NECESSARY, but beautiful!
JimSBand 2 years ago
Try Google for links to the Glyn Johns method. Amazing sound with just 4 mics. Much less tweaking and a HUGE sound.
ludwigvan66 2 years ago
Depending on the drum beat complexity and the desired effect. The most natural sound would be achieved by placing 2 mics only. But you would need to wounder around, testing diffirent placements till you find the most desirable sweet spot. Have you evber heard about holophonic reacordings of drum sets?
LittleNemoTheDreamer 2 years ago
You guys have never heard a bad sounding drum have you?
