This is also used on the youtube vid. 'The Funeral of Brendan Hughes'

  • Thank you for this GlasgowCeltic, it's beautiful. I'd never heard this version, Phil Coulter did a wonderful arrangement with this one, I can't stop listening to it.

  • @gcamaill,

Me either... I think Aoife Ni Fhearraigh's voice at the start just adds to the haunting melody...

  • superdudeman01,

Which artist are you looking for? Phil Coulter, or the artist who originally wrote it (Finbar Furey) back in '62 at the age of 16?

    Regards,

    GC88

  • whoa..at first, this seemed really creepy, but now..it...it's just...its just perfect. nothing more to say. 5/5

  • superjailwardenlover,

    'Really creepy'...?! :o

Are you sure we're talking about the same song here! lol

It's mellow and chilling but I would have to agree with you the opening section (till he comes in on the piano) does have a haunted feel to it. but don't blame Phil for that, blame the legendary Aoife Ni Fhearraigh and her haunting voice. LOL

    Thanks for listening and voting,

    GC88.

  • no, no, i didn't mean it like that, this song is very brilliant and phil's just..awesome. i agree with you on your fourth paragraph there though, lol..

  • fool dont know what u are talking about

  • You make it clear what kind of person you are when you make remarks like that, he's a musician, chill out like

  • upthedubs2008 AND chickenballroll...

This is quoted from Phil himself:

'In recent years it seems as if my music has found it's way into every hotel lobby, elevator and resteraunt in Ireland (I'm Not complaining!).'

So :-p to both of you... lol

  • lol, fair play to him.. and long may it continue..

  • Favourite version. Simply fantastic.

  • still prefer finbar's version, rawer purer - this is good but like a film score.

  • To this day one of my favorite pieces...This version my Favorite!

  • Finbar's version is excellent... however i think this one is deeper and way softer which makes me like much more this version than Finbar's...

Keep listening over and over again, and it calms me down everytime i hear it... i cant rate it because there aren´t enough stars...this song is a tribute to peace and tranquility...

Many thanks from me and from Portugal =)

  • slipkmot,

Just got around to reading your comment and your right it does have a calming effect whenever you listen to it. It's top of my 'chillout' playlist on my mp3 player.

With a song of this quality there will NEVER be enough stars to vote on...

Many thanks for your comment and hope to hear from you on my other P.C. vids ;-)

    GC88

  • I love this song!Truly beautiful,I get chills everytime I hear this song.

One thing about this piano version is lacking...it's the end with the flute (like in the original),It would have been so awesome!

  • Absolutely breathtaking!

  • This was great! I'd really like a pure flute version too though.. Does anyone know where I can find this, but without speech and song?

  • Avraks,

Thank you for watching.... & thank you for commenting, much appriciated ;-)

When you say 'without speech and song', do you mean a solo piece on the flute?! I have 'several' versions (43 to be exact) of this wonderful piece of music from Adelante to Spirit of '16.

Once again thank you for watching & feel free to watch all of my others ;-)

  • This is quite lovely. He does a beautiful job on that piano. I could listen to this over and over. It is very tranquil, yet it has a mysterious sound to it. Thanks for posting it.

  • Thank you for taking the time to listen to it.

I still think Finbar's version is the best... But, yes, Phil is a genius on the ole black & white keys...

    GC88.

  • Beauty song is calming to the soul and yet wakes you at the same time. Thank you ever so for this post.

  • When i first heard this i got it on limewire and i love it GO IRELAND!!!!!!!

  • Sláinte for the comment a chara.

Go look up Finbar Furey's version, if you want to hear it played as it should be, on the flute/chieftian pipe (NO offence Phil...).

    Slán,

    GC88

  • I love this, i first heard this song like two weeks ago! I want to learn this on the piano, do you by any chance know if/where i can get the music for this? Ah, so nice, you're the only one with phil coulter's version on youtube...i think :P I cant stop listening to it, im a hard rock lover, but i do have a soft side for music like this. Simply wonderful.

  • Your welcome haggman7.

As and when I find ANYONE doing the full sheet music for this, I'll let you know! I've been looking for over 2 yaers for a full, decent copy of Lonesome Boatman, on piano, but so far without sucess :-(

Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it...

    GC88

  • No problem! Thank you for letting me know when you find sheet music, i hope you meet Phil Coulter someday as my goal is to meet my favorite band Dream Theater. Im on napster right now listening to some of PC's songs, they,re wonderful, i actually got on the computer and played this song when my mom was sick, and she loved it.

  • that woman sounds like the one who did vocals on the titanic soundtrack

  • It's Aoife Ní Fhearraigh. A native from North West County Donegal, not that far from where Phil lives actually. She features heavily on his 'Lake Of Shadows' album.

  • very nice melodic tune thanks glasgow.

  • It's a nice version - Still prefer the Original from Finbar Furey, far more haunting in it's originality, can't beat the old Tin Whistle.

  • Sláinte for the comment a chara ;-)
