It is so true that corporations work for the shareholders and not the employees. I used to work for a US bank for 23 years and I saw a great shift from a 'people' oriented company to a 'keep-the-shareholders-happy' company. When we needed to increase profits, we cut head-counts.

The essential point is being missed here and by the protestors. Corporations operate within a legal context. The legal context is created by government. If a corporation is doing something illegal, government needs to enforce the law. If a corporation is doing something legal but damaging, government needs to change the rules defining the legal context. Government is the source of the problem not the solution. In short, the protestors should be in Washington, not on Wall Street!

Corporations, at least incorporated ones, are often short term ventures run by people who's only goal is to serve shareholders over a period of a few years. To believe that these short term goals are necessarily the goals of your family is naive. Business is good, I am a partner in a corporation, but I believe that if business does not serve a greater good it is useless to humanity.
What is emergence? A complex system arising out of simple rules. What's wrong? Why do the Corps own everything, more specifically the Gov is now the major stock holder in most of the major Corps. The reason is found in the CAFR.
