Typically when you get that spinning deal on startup on a Mac it's a bad hard drive. I don't think it's probably trying to boot off the external, but if you typically leave that plugged in, try unplugging it and booting the computer again. If you still get the same results, I'll bet there's a bad hard drive in the computer. You could always try booting from your OS discs, running Disk Utility and running the verify/repair disk option.
