  • Can I use Pyrodex behind a slug as you have with shot in this video? I would like to start molding my own.

  • good series

but i do not se the big advantage as the primers cant be improvised. But you can shoot with all kinds of funny stuff.

you could might as well stock .22 ammo as you still need to stock the primers.

its really amazing what you have build up with your youtube channel, online store, survival school and all. Its inspiring to follow here on youtube

  • I COUNTED EXACTLY 40 HOLES GOOD ESTIMATION

  • I've even use'd good & plenty candy to reload shells it's a hard candy . And chap stick as a cap to hold every thing in the shell good for small game. Just an idea.

  • Rock's will scuff the barrel of the gun any small hard item's will work in the field even wood . For small game rock's should be your last thought.

  • You can even use a acorn as a slug or small hard shell nut or hard berry's it will kill small game.

  • Theres 42 holes

  • Another GREAT video Dave. Thanks again for the info. I continue to learn from you every day.

Side note: What is the inlay/designs material on your shotgun? Something you did? I'd love to try it on my H&R.

    Please keep the vids coming!

    Thanks! Roy

  • This really has me curious of what kind of velocities you are getting out of that. My first gun was the exact same thing and I am kicking myself for getting rid of it.

  • there were 39 holes in the target, but one seems like a couple pellets went in together, so you got it for sure lol

  • I found some grea data on loading shotshells in all popular gauges with black powder that I thought I would share here, as with any of this reloading stuff this is for INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY! you will have to put 2 & 2 together inorder to decifer the web addy here but it's not hard, very informative stuff. 3 w's * tbullock * kom/bpsg * html (just add the w's & the dots and be sure to get everything else in as well and you will get there just fine. Enjoy.....!

  • @mapbike Thanks brother that's good info.

  • Great videos Dave. I was wondering, aren't BBs made of steel?

If so wouldn't lead shot of the desired size be better because of more weight for the same size, or do you prefer the copper platted steel because it's less toxic? Thanks.

  • @1973Saved not sure on a 12 guage but on black traditonal black powder barrels copper is completely usable but since its harder than lead it sometimes leaves copper scrapings or smearing inside the barrel which can be a pain to clean out and can affect accuracy of rifled barrels, they do have copper cased sabots for muzzleloaders but theres a spit concensess on use, half the people are for it n half are against it.

  • @1973Saved the concern from steel shot is that if you have a rifled barrel that u shoot slugs and shot from the steel shot can and will eventually file your rifled barrel into a smoothbore, where lead shot conforms to the grooves inside the barrel steel shot stays its shape and stays hard, copper softer than steel will usually smear inside the barrel and could damage it.

  • would this method be ok for other 12 gauge shotguns as well?

  • @alphawolfxxx86 in general, break actions(single or double barrel) would be best for this since there's no moving parts acting on the shell except for the ejector, the hitting of one shell on another in a magazine might degrade the condition of the shell since there's no crimp keeping it together anymore. if you don't have a break action, get on, you can buy them used and in great condition for as low as $40-$60 at flea markets, gun shops or gun shows, no reason to not get one if you want one.

  • @danthman114 - ok well i wasn't for sure if there was a difference in them, i thought somewhere it was said that there is a difference i the 2, like one has more powder in the primer than the other.......??????

  • Very informative. I've often wondered if BB's were alright for shotgun barrels. And I agree, blackpowder is very user friendly. Great video.

    Jesus is coming soon.

  • You could go one step further: according to the Army Improvised Munitions Handbook, you can actually refill the primer cup using 2-3 strike anywhere match heads.

  • that looks like my gun

  • Hey Dave why can't you use the 209 primers from black powder rifles like some of all the newer ones use??

  • @MrGattor33 those are the same primers

  • @MrGattor33 the firing pin

  • @SuperCoolguy98 ok you lost me there on the firing pin......????

  • @MrGattor33 you can, it's the exact same thing. you use 209 shotgun primers in these newer primer muzzleloaders, it's what they were designed to use.

  • I am blaming this video for the 209 primers, powder measure and pyrodex I just bought. LOL

Awesome vid Dave. Keep it up brother.

  • This is good "need to know" infromation, thanks Dave. I have a question, you used the BP Equivelant, can the real BP be used safely?

  • Does the shell have to be high brass or can it be low brass?

  • @AirsoftAlphaDog you can do it low brass as well. just keep it under 80-85gr. = 1 1/8oz powder...

  • @PCT2013thruhike A 1lb can should contain 5,760grains of powder. If you use 80gr charge it should be 72 and if it is 100gr then 57. Of course that would be an ideal scenario where all the powder is in the can and none is spilled in the loading process. so 50-70 :)

  • yea but some shotguns pellets are made of steel but i dont konw if copper pellts will if yoou know commet back

  • rimmed cartriges like .38special [ straight wall, rimmed] can be reloaded with BP or equivalent also. Sure it's better to use modern gear, and BP is dirty blah...blah... but it's better than no ammo. Good video, and btw 410 shot shells can reloaded and fired in a .45 colt chamber, used to make them befor I found factory shot loads for revolvers

  • can i do the same thing with the wax but with slugs

  • Hey Dave, if you used 100 grains in a 12 guage, what would you use for a 20 guage?

  • you should wrap the bb's up in a peice of cloth or use lead shot, the metal shot despite its coating will damage the barrel. Lee makes 000, 00, and number 4 buckshot molds which they sell on their website for about 25 dollars. i have also picked up used 32 or 36 cal round ball molds at gun shows for 10 dollars, if you buy a number 4 mold and a 36 cal round ball mold you can have a diverse set up to take game from doves to deer. You can use 36 cal balls in a sling shot for dove and rabbit.

  • @azreal289 i am sorry to say that the bb's will damage your barrel as their coatings are shallow and the compressive forces are well beyond what a bb gun can deliver. The coating protects bb guns but wont do a thing for your rifle barrel.

  • can you do the same thing with a .410 shell

  • is there more or less recoil when using black powder?

  • This is amazingly hill billy Dave. Totally adding this to my skill set. Next year will be all shotguzzle loading.

  • Dave, I like the way that you did that. You should be able to close the top of the plastic case with a little work, and then seal that shut with the wax. You could loop your string around the magnet and back through itself instead of having to retie it all the time. Geoff

  • Comment removed

  • First, I have to laugh at everyone telling you what you're doing wrong when clearly it works.

Second, a serious question: How would you make/substitute primers if you had none in a long term self-reliant situation?

  • @BrandonRandomly That's a bit harder to do bro lol.

  • I did this a number of years back, but made the almost fatal mistake of not using a powder measure and being young and dumb overloaded the powder quite a bit, resulted in my favorite gun becoming a pile of parts,

great vid thou, love the brass tack job on the shotgun to.

  • Is 100 grains the max charge? where did you get the magnet, looks like its from an automatic transmission pan.

  • Is 100 grains the max charge?

  • how many grains for a 20 gauge

  • Dave I am a fan of yours but it looks like in BUSA this video did not go down too well, its not my opinion,I consider that if you have a good knowledge of your weapon you can get out of some trouble really fast ,God bless and keep up the good work

  • Hi Dave

  • Someone said pyrodex was twice as corrosive as black powder. This has not been my experience. Pyrodex don't crust when it burns and leave things a little slick...

  • You cannot blow up a modern firearm with black powder loads. It is also hard to get enough pop to donut your spread.

I have used a black powder muzzle loader 12 for years..

If you haven't hunted with black powder shells you are really missing something!

  • So it was a hand loaded black powder shot shell to shoot from a regular single shot shotgun? Didn't you work up the proper charge for the best distance/group?

  • hey dave what knife is that u are using in this video

  • @nightwalker2830 Pathfinder Scout

  • @wildernessoutfitters thanks i order me a plks 2 and then im gonna get a kydex sheath for it i been using an enzo trapper but i like the pathfinder knife but i cant carry that everyday cause its 5 inch blade but i can carry the plsk 2. i enjoy your channel hope to meet you some day

  • Hodegen is alot better than Alliant powder, good vid Dave thanks!

  • Dave I do all my own reloading . Just FYI if you use the same gun that it was fired from this will work. But if you have a shell from a diff gun then more than likely have to be resized. Your reloading info will work for single shot and pump shotguns that the shell was fired from, for semi and double barrel best if you resize the fired case may not fit.

  • Is there any way you can use black powder to reload your own slug shells?

  • Good video - well thought out, simple, well explained. My only thing to mention would be that true black powder is corrosive, and pyrodex doubly so. More than a few people out there don't know that, and don't know how to clean it out of their guns properly. Perhaps you mentioned it on the muzzle loader video, but I didn't notice it in this one.

  • Dave i think your videos are really great. alot of info. For the black powder in the shotgun was great. I like that one. One hint from a friend of mine the old timers in Kentucky used hornets nest for the wad.

  • i like pyrodex but i still love good ole FFG black powder and a buffalo bullet

  • Got a few of those ol H&R's around the homestead, nice little guns bro. Loved the video. Thumbs up!~~John

  • Thanks for the great vid man, I will have to find a nice magnet like you have.

  • Cool video. Just thought I would make a suggestion. Instead of the beeswax how do you feel about elmers white glue(the regular kind, not the watersoluable kind). Ive seen guys load them with this and have good luck and the glue would be easy to carry in any pack without a mess due to it being in a bottle and the heat would not affect glue at all.

  • So Dave I went to my Walmart & they didn't have any shotgun primers but they did have muzzle loader primers. So I put one in a spent 12 gauge shell just for curiosity & it fit but it does protrude into the inside of the shell more. Now I do have a muzzle loader so if it won't work I haven't wasted any money. I haven't done anything with the shell because I wasn't sure about it. I did find that I had some shotgun primers anyways.

  • Dave this was a great how to video I have always wanted to know how this was done..... GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • Hi Dave, great video as ussual, what do you think about using an adaptor and shooting .22LR with it? You can use other cals but .22LR is cheap ammo.

  • Yes! Black powder guns. I so want to get into those.

I think we might be allowed to get a license for them here in Australia.

  • Way to go Dave. Your long hunter series is one great idea!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

  • why would single shot be better than a side by side or pump???

  • @LoCoZoMbiEKiLleR I guess as it has less parts, plus it's old skool :)

  • Comment removed

  • Hey, good stuff, this answers a lot of my why's from last video on this.

What's next? High pressure air bottle hooked to the back of the barrel ? ; )

  • yeah i like this way better, you could have 2 or 3 ready to rock. great vid, thanks for sharing

  • OUTSTANDING VIDEO Dave!! Great follow-up as well. I wasn't sure this could be accomplished safely, but you proved it could!! Thanks again ~

  • Really like this video, How many times can the shotgun shell be reloaded?

  • @gander2000 really depends in the shell, if you use light loads the the shell does not wear you can reload an infinite amount of times, as long as there are no crackes or splits you should be fine

  • Love these firearm videos Dave, in specific situations the firearm could be a critical piece of a survival gear. Hoping to see more of these types of videos!

  • Come on need to see turkey call.

  • pyrodex is not black powder:) sorry bro

  • @houseoffire72 Correct it is BP Equivelant

  • @wildernessoutfitters Dave, have you ever tried to make your own BP? Good skill to learn:)

  • @houseoffire72 Pyrodex can be substituted volume-for-volume for blackpowder. Pyrodex is classified as a flammable solid for shipping purposes, not as an explosive as blackpowder is. (In actuality, blackpowder does not explode in blackpowder firearms. There is a pressure curve.

So yes it's not black powder, but everything Dave said was correct and accurate regarding it characteristics.

  • @zugzwangish Exactly:)

  • Great video Dave. How many shots can u get off before having to clean the barrel like u did in your last video?

  • Love your video,s Dave there,s is always somthing new to learn in them!! By the way, your beard is awesome, looks good on you!! good luck to you!!

  • Neat idea, how much powder did you use or how would you guestimate a quantity, I have an old Model 37 that I would like to try this with. Do you know if the brass shells used in cowboy action shooting would work just the same? Thanks

  • I would have added the old primer in with the pellets,... just for good measure, lol.

  • Can you use (relatively) dry leaves instead of the cloth?

  • Dave I liked both of your black powder 12 Ga. shotgun videos some times I'll find shotgun brass laying around in the dirt that has been stepped on and the plastic is smashed and I always think what a waste but now I realize I can just cut of the plastic and tap the base back till it's round again by using a piece of dowel or a round branch and a guy is back in business thanks for the video bro.

  • would the grain count be the same for a .410?

  • Dave...awesome as usual...just one thing.

PYRODEX isnt a true black powder, what you got there is a SEMI SMOKELESS, and the best parts of BOTH powder types.

lower power level so safe for shotguns and pistols, but here's the cool part.

you can ALSO find loadings for 45 LONG COLT, and 45 ACP, since both were loaded to black powder pressure levels.

Cannot wait until You and Cody tear it up again, even my wife loves your series.

HOO AH, and keep your powder dry brother...

    Seeya

    Dude

  • Can't beat the H&R's! Gonna have to try that out! Knew there was a reason I have so many single shot shotguns!!

  • dave you are one smart man that is all i have to say. i have a savage single shot 12 ga. and ill defenetly be doing that i have one question though. How would you know what size ball you would need for muzzleloading . i would like to try and kill a deer with it . thanks agian and have a good one

    ronnie

  • @farmer199490 Measure diameter in thousanths at the end of the barrel and then measure patch thickness.

  • @wildernessoutfitters good math dave i counted and their really are 40 holes in the target.

  • @wildernessoutfitters hey Dave ive been asking on a few videos never got a response I know you get a lot of questions but i was wondering i have the same shotgun in 20GA i can do the same as you did?

  • @farmer199490 you can try swallowing your moms sleep meds and dying, maybe that will fill the empty worthless void your life has become instead of maiming another animal. i learn from this guy to be able to shoot people like you when shit hits the fan, go fuck yourself asshole

  • @farmer199490 you could ram a slug down the barrel too

  • 42 holes

  • Excellent - Very informative! Thanks Dave!

  • Great video !!!

  • will the shells break down after a while?

  • Good stuff Dave

  • Dave, how many times can you relaod each shell before it starts damageing the brass?

  • great video! i will try this out in the am on mr squirrel! thank you sir!

  • Another excellent video Dave, fantastic series.

  • I have the same gun in .444. . . It was .44 mag, but I had a GS re-chamber it. They're a cheap gun, but I love the heck out'a mine.

  • That would be nice to see the gun actually firing instead of just the target being hit Dave! :

  • @thethethetheluis

    Did you watch the intro?????

  • @AndroidM1980 Yeah but I wanted to see him firing at the target. It wouldn't hurt to have 2 cameras set up (or since it was the second video of him firing it: have this video show the gun instead of the target)

  • The weak link in this setup seems to be the beezwax. I remember an old video you did of a little yellow can of, I think Murray's Beeswax. Which if I recall was a soft wax. Would you recommend that for this job? Or would it need something harder?

  • Was wondering Dave if the same principle could be used in a double barreled shotgun as well.

  • super cool vid, as always. thanks Dave. A fan from Mexico.

  • How many times can you reuse that shell? I know they start to get weak after a few shots. Does it stretch like brass?

  • Nice beard Dave.

  • i see about 42 or 43 holes..just sayin :) by the way Love the videos

  • i see about 42 or 43 holes..just sayin :)

  • Have a 20 gauge...want a 12 gauge now to reload

  • Could you use pine pitch if you didn't have bee wax?

  • That's great stuff Dave. I also have one of those H&R shotguns & I didn't know you could load black powder in them. I hunt a lot of small game with it. My question would be about the corrosion factor of the black powder? Also what do you lube your shotgun barrel with in the woods to keep the bore nice & smooth? The other question would be. Are those just regular BB gun BB's or shotgun BB size?

  • @tyrannynotever I clean it alot bro, I used Tallow lubed pactches from cleaning to pack the shells, and yes those are regular BB's for a BB gun, easy to get and cheap.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Thanks Dave I think your the best out there & you're down to earth. I really appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work. Don't know if you know about cut shells or wax slugs, but it's another example of the versatility of a single shot shotgun. Check out iraqveteran8888, lost art cut shells & lost art wax slugs. Thank for replying.

  • Keep up the Longhunter Series! This education is priceless for the common man...thanks for all you do!

  • Man, i like reusable stuff. I want that rifle..

  • hey dave can you make a video on how to make that bird?

  • @marcjtdc ...really? ok just either freehand or trace a picture of a bird on a floormat. use a blade to cut it out... not hard

  • @champjb25 Ok, does it have to be a floormat?

  • @marcjtdc really any mat you want. you can use really anything. get a jigsaw and use steel

  • what pack are you carrying?

  • Comment removed

  • Nice vid. If you have tge stuff in your pak u should know this

  • Awesome! Also love the cross hanging off the neck. God bless you brother.

  • @tainorebelde1 the dude must be convinced christian. Respect for that.

  • Hey Dave, off topic, but I figured I could catch you hear.... Your knife appears to have a dark finsh on it. Does the knife come that way? Or is that a petina you put on the knife? Sorry about last post.

  • Hey Dave, off topic but figured I could catch you hear..... Your knife appearsvt

  • It IS 40 holes o_O Dude, you're good!

  • Dave wherre did you find that magnet? If you couldn't find one as I caan't you could use three stacked wasres epoxyed together.

  • i love how you hit every place accept the brest...

  • Dave!! what hat is that?!?! I need to know! Anyone else know to spare Dave some time?

  • you could probably use pine sap as well...

  • HAPPY THANKGIVING! I love your videos and the show on Discovery. It is good to see someone using the old single shot 12 gauge. It was the first firearm i owned and used. i loved it. I plan on getting my son one after he completes the Michigan DNR Hunter Safety Course. So keep on going and doing what you do. Thanks. May America always be free and your family always safe.

  • damn dave, why do you have to put all these ideas in my head! now you have me looking for an old lee loader for 12 ga and some brass hulls.

my wife is mad at you bro!

  • @danthman114 I believe the Lee Loader would not work with brass shells. You would have to lubricate them otherwise they will stick to the sizer. BTW brass shells use wads with a larger diameter than paper or plastic shells as their wall thickness is smaller.

  • @RobertoDonatti youre right, i didnt think of that when i wrote the comment. lol. ill use plastic with that lee kit but i still want to get some brass so i can do field loads...

  • @danthman114 Get 25 empty shells and weigh them. Now weigh the equipment you will use to reload them together with the containers for powder and shot. You will see that 25 loaded shells are lighter than the sum total of the above items. 80%+ of the weight of a shotgun cartridge is the shot. In any case, the shells loaded in Dave's fashion will give piss poor performance as a rag can't furnish a good gas seal. Steel shot will ruin barrel if fired without a plastic cup.

  • @RobertoDonatti i know but i think the point of him doing this is that if you need to heres what you do... in a pinch...

  • thank's dave, this information is priceless. please keep the video's comming.i look foward to each and every one.

  • Great video! Happy Thanksgiving.

  • why do you use black powder instead of normal gun powder ?

  • @mikr0bas probably because anyone can make black powder....e.g in a SHTF situation gunpowder will be extremely expensive and maybe not available to all.

  • @CivilianSheepdog No, not everybody can make gunpowder. It is extremely explosive and a very risky process. Powder works mix black powder thoroughly wet with water to avoid explosions. Static electricity will ignite black powder. Haven't you heard about firecracker factories blowing up? this happens all the time. Stay away from black powder unless you know what you're doing.

  • @RobertoDonatti yes I do agree, in a normal situation go to a shop and buy a professional product. However people have been making and improvising with black powder since the 1700s when buying from a retailer was not an option. Furthermore I interpreted the nature of this video as an experiment for such a SHTF situation when reloading materials were not available and the motivation of finding a food source was the priority.

  • @CivilianSheepdog It's easy to make high quality black powder too, here is a 100g batch... 75g potassium nitate(salt peter) 15g charcoal(made from willow or pine even works well) and 10g sulfur... I make alot of own for my fireworks. It's a good skill to learn for bushcrafting, survival and WTSHF. Many uses for it, start fire's, charcoal can be used if a toxic plant is injested, camp security(trip lines boom) and its cheap to make...

  • @houseoffire72 urine apparently helps as well, used in the graining process instead of water to produce less smoke and a more intense burn. Obviously I have never tried this but for century's it was collected from locals and their animals, for this as well as for use in the tannery.

  • @CivilianSheepdog I watched a video series on how they collected potassium nitrate from urine and piles of poo, wow what a long process but informitive to say the least:)

  • yes this with aluminium powder makes a nice flash bang.

  • @CivilianSheepdog I use -325 mesh aluminium for that, seems to ignite alot faster and it makes great flash.

  • Dave great video i am really enjoying this longhunter series and hope to see many more.

  • If that bird had been real, it would have been cut to shreds and inedible.

Using a rag as a powder wad is very inefficient as it won't seal the bore. A poor man's solution in Europe is using cardboard that you can cut with a wadcutter. You put a wad over the powder pour in about 1 inch of bran on top. Put another wad and tamp it well. I would stay away from blackpowder. You can make a measure out of a .32 casing and use Blue dot and there's no way you'll get an overload. Use lead pellets.
