Visiting the grave would have been a nice touch. This was originally shown as a two-hour finale "movie"... on a tuesday night if I remember correctly... everyone in my family gathered to watch it. 1968 I think. Wonderful show. We should all insist that they bring back TV of this quality. Stop watching reality shows.
That was a great ending to a classic TV show, but they should have added one more scene. They should have had Dr. Kimble visit his wife's grave because he spent all that time running from the law and he probably didn't have enough time to mourn his wife's death.
This is not the original epilogue in some markets Part 2 was not shown on Aug. 29 because of baseball games, but many people in the country did see the finale on that date.,
It was shown in the markets where it was pre-empted on Sept. 5 and the narration was changed to the new date. On the original airing he says Tuesday, August 29, the day the running stopped.
I think they released the Sept. 5 date on the DVD set.
This episode was televised throughout the U.S. on Tuesday, August 29, 1967. This is the Canadian version of the final episode, which was broadcast one week after it aired in the U.S. on September 5, 1967.
i became an addict of this show while i was in grade 11, i use to get up and watch this at 2am and boy did i look my best for the next day at school, me and 20 others did this right through to graduation, just 2 years ago i saw the FINAL, most of the gang got back together and watched it on an LCD projector in the back yard. a "fugitive bar b q and pool party, at sunset, the projection was turned on!! over 21 feet wide!!!!!!! i was so F**KN' excited!! great times and an incredible show!!
I was introduced to "The Fugitive" by my Mom, who was a huge fan during its original run. She was so proud she grew up with that show :) I myself became addicted at 18. The acting, writing, music.. It was all brilliant!
A fantastic, popular, and critically acclaimed series, that would have went a lot longer if not for Janssen, who shined as Kimble, bowing out after the 4th season. Location shooting, long grueling hours, having to be in practically every scene, 30 episodes a season - by the end of season four, Janssen was fried. This show took a lot out of him, and his drinking/smoking on top of it, he aged very fast and literally dropped dead at 49 in 1980 of a massive heart attack in his bathroom at about 4am
Janssen always played Kimble with lonely melancholy as well as quiet desperation, never losing focus on what he had to do. He found his wife murdered, escaped death himself for it by sheer freak accident, and he knew he only had so much time to find the one-armed man before Gerard caught him. The final scene here is perfectly understated. Nowadays it'd be overblown and lame with over-the-top juvenile dialogue and Kimble going off on Gerard and decking him, while Gerard was just doing his job.
@MisterMasterShafter1 I totally agree with your description of David Janssen's portrayal of the fugitive Dr. Kimble. The doctor always seemed to be a genuinely kind and decent man. It would be in Dr. Kimble's personality to accept Lt. Gerard's handshake, but I would'nt, I would turn and walk away, even though I would want to beat him into the ground. Gerard had a job to do, but he neglected his job every time he had the hint of a lead to follow his vindictive obsession of capturing Dr. Kimble.
WTF? The final narration says "Tuesday September 5. The day the running stopped." This episode actually aired on August 29, 1967 and William Conrad's narration said so. Was this dubbed for a different market?

Because of it's late night week day time slot , I never saw this TV series until the 1967 summer reruns. My first watched episode was "Road To Selena", in which Percy Rodrigues guest stars as a Montana deputy sheriff, who has to take an unknown prisoner (Kimble) and a hostile murderer (played by James Farentino) who knows Richard Kimble's true identity across the state through hostile territory. One week later the final two part episode aired, which ended the series. A great TV series !!
@fairnorth You say it was in a late night time slot? The show was actually in a prime time slot, not late night at all. The show was airing Tuesday nights at 9 o' clock CST. Yes it was a great TV series.
@lablite42 All four seasons are on DVD now. And fairnorth, the episode you watched was titled "Passage to Helena," and it's one of my favorite color eps of the show as well. Good taste!

@alexalex3131 I don't if you noticed, but Law & Order has minimalist endings. Those are much more realistic than some over-dramatized ending. Thanks for making the observation.
Powerful end to a powerful show. Top notch in every dept, season after season. I read somewhere years ago that up until the moon landing this was the most watched moment on TV. And it was the most watched episode of a TV show until the last episode of MASH. THANKS for posting this awesome footage! :)
I remember being really pissed of that I was unable to see the final episode. My family was going on a trip driving out to the midwest.......I never did see the final episode
In the United States, the narrator says, "August 29th, the day the running stopped." This video is from the Canadian version (which made it to VHS here), which aired on September 5.
I had my picture taken with Barry Morse (Lt Gerard). We took the same flight from Heathrow to Toronto and he was kind enough to let me take a picture with him. It was a good photo and for the life of me, I can't find it. That was 20 some years ago. In today's world I'd scan it and make it one of my facebook profile pictures.
Fox Studios had to cut WKRP to shreds (and didn't release seasons subsequent to the first) because they had deal with rights issues from a bazillion musical artists whose original vocals were played in the series.
In "The Fugitive," CBS is dealing with the estate of Pete Rugolo, Capitol Records and its own music library. That's it.
Barry Morse was a personal friend of mine,he was a wonderful actor and a true gentleman and i was honoured though saddened to be invited to his memorial service.I miss him but i will always be greatful that he was a friend for many years.
Diane Baker was in Spain when the last episode of EL FUGITIVO was broadcast there. When the Spaniards recognised her,she was greeted and feted as if she were the biggest star in Hollywood.
@Neville6000 Oh shut up! You may have been be able to see the Emperor's new clothes but I didn't! I'm so sick of pretentious, clever, pseudo intellectual fuckers like you on YOUTUBE. SHUT YER GOB!
Well I wouldn't say every episode was filled with High Drama and suspense. But I haven't watched the entire series yet. I am only on Season 3 volume 2 just past the episode where Kimble learns the one armed mans name.
Great, amazing show, but there are some real boring episodes though. Most of the episodes so far are great, there are a few which just seem to take forever.
@snake2006 I grew up in a home where both of my parents were Fugitive fanatics. Actually, both of them
were TV addicts, but they especially loved this show.. So I watched every episode with them.
Maybe every episode wasn't riveting, but David Janssen's persecuted character was so eloquently underplayed that you were constantly cheering for him. He played perhaps the best underdog role in TV
history...but I'm sure there are others that just don't come immediately to mind.
Wait, I am not discrediting the show at all. I love this show. I am allot younger than it. I got into it when the movie came out, they showed a few episodes on TV to help promote the Ford movie. I was hooked.
The TV Land had it on for a year so I managed to see the first season that way but still wanted more. Then came the DVD's after TV land took it off, which is allowing me to see the complete series.
Allot of the shows I like the most are older than me (I am 29), I love Hogan's Heroes which was in the mid sixties to early 70's, I love Gilligan's Island (again mid sixties), The Fugitive (1960's), Bewitched (late 60's to mid 70's) among others.
They don't make TV like this anymore, now it's total crap. By the end of the 80's there was nothing good on anymore. Only current shows I follow is South Park and The Walking Dead. The rest is garbage.
@snake2006 This is the power & beauty of satellite radio & DVDs & Cable TV. OLD STUFF NEVER DIES! I also appreciate movies and music that were created before I was born. Humphrey Bogart movies, for instance. I always had tastes that were a little out of step with my age group. TV way back when relied on plot and character development. Are you a fan of The Twilight Zone? There were actually some shows that appealed to the intellect. (But I always preferred Maryanne over Ginger).
@BRUC2016 ... Oh, yes ... How absolutely right you are. THAT was TV -- good TV, way back when the networks and entertainment executives were artists first, and businessmen second. These days, though, they've dispensed with the artistry completely, it seems, and, well, today's American TV is the shameful result. Your comment was brief, Bruc, but you're oh, so, so right.
What was that about what did the guy do? All of those Barry Morse interviews gone too! Youtube really sucks any more,I hope you or some one can find out and would love to see him and all of those videos back really soon!
Bruce 415, After we force Obama and his henchmen out of office,we'll get a real Attorney General to investigate You Tube.First, they stop Pastor Manning, now they hammer Chance. One of my other names got banned just for posting the home phone numbers of the Federal judges who illegally locked up my neighbor,Hal Turner. You Tube is now a vast wasteland.
When the black & white police car pulls up, I was halfway expecting the cop to step out and take Dr. Kimble back to jail for unpaid traffic tickets. That's what happens when you watch too much of Leslie Nielsen spoofing great shows like this.
@Mr76Yearsago Actually, he was in at least one episode, during season 1. I don't remember the title, but if I'm not mistaken, the character he played was in a wheelchair.
In the original broadcast the running stopped on August 29th, but since this episode was preempted for baseball in some markets, the day the running stopped was also Sept. 5th.
Point one: Kimble said he saw a young boy fishing. Now how would Kimble have known this boy was fishing on that particular night if he wasn't there?
Point two: The one-armed man picked up a lamp and killed Helen Kimble. His fingerprints would have been on the lamp. And remember Gerard found out he was in Indiana because he was fingerprinted for a job miles away from Stafford.
Also Chandler's fingerprints were on a glass he took away from Helen Kimble when talking to her before the murder.
"Tuesday August 29th, 1967 The day the running stopped." When the final episode of The Fugitve aired on ABC-TV in the U.S. and back then it was the highest watched event in TV history until the last MASH episode rivaled it by 40 Million viewers more 16 years later. it happened 32 years ago this month.
I loved The Fugitive...I watched it faithfully. I even remembered the last line of the epilogue. They simply do not make TV dramas of this quality any more.
Easily the best episodic drama ever made for television. In its four years, there were so many twists and turns.
Give props to Harrison Ford for a great job in the film, but David Janssen WAS Dr. Richard Kimble. At 10pm on Tuesday nites, the country stopped everything else, to see if and how he would wriggle himself out of a jam.
Strong stories, impactful music, great characters week-to-week, and the relentless Lt. Gerard. AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC ... !
Music makes good movies into classics. The music here is outstanding; it creates the tone and supports the characters; the sweeping beauty of gthe movements and scoring are beyond words. Wonder how much of the music Peter R. did on this one.
I know what you mean LewWaters. I hear the theme song and it make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It brings back memories of my childhood home in LosAngeles and how wed gather around the Black and White set to watch this every week. Great memories from a great time in TV and music and life. My big brother was in Vietnam at that time and he told me how news of the final episode was talked about even over there.
I loved this show. It was a bit before my time but I saw it on the local public television station when it aired a few years ago. It was said though that the fact that the show did "resolve" itself hurt its syndication value.
We can tell Gerard said something to Kimble after they shake hands at the 42 second mark. I just wish we knew what it was. We can speculate as to "Good luck" or "Congratulations," but we may never know.
Hey schoduck, you're right, but I also like the score just BEFORE Kimble turns away from Girard; the cellos are so deep and dramatic and the sound is totally appropriate for that moment in the show. Such incredible talent, and what do we have today? Unfortunately, nothing more than memories, for the most part.
Hi gazork123. What a profound statement my friend! My God what emotion and sense of thought; just with those incredible cellos and following brass and the resplendent acting chops of both Janssen & Morse!
Tuesday, September 5th; the day such incredible talent stopped!
Clever gazork, how the cellos build when the patrol car approaches, then die away when the officer turns away from Kimble.
Nothing to fear anymore!
I remember bits of this from when I was 14 when it was shown in the UK. Really takes me back. That was in August '83. I have relived those moments of joy when the truth was finally to come out!
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoy the show so much. I think it's fascinating that the show enjoyed such a loyal following worldwide. BTW, did you know that Barry Morse (Lt. Gerard) was actually English?
It's not at all obvious Morse is English. He's good at the American accent and has all the mannerisms right. I bet many thought him Canadian. Perfect man for the part.
I can't get over Kimble's look of disgust when Gerard offers his hand outside the courtroom.
I don't think Kimble was discusted with Gerard; more like he was surprised.
Remember it was Gerard that gave Kimble 24 hours to find the one-armed man. Plus he saved Kimble's life by shooting and killing the one-armed man on top of that tower.
He probably was surprised by Gerard's assistance. I know I would be! You'd never get that from a police leutenant, and a stickler for the rules at that..exceptions will be rare.
The writers did a great job in using Gerard's occasional human side; in his light-handedness with everyone who assisted Kimble.
But Gerard saving Kimble's life was just him doing the right thing. Kimble would be grateful for that. It was goodness in the position of authority that won the day.
Kimble shook his hand for helping him, but I'm sure he wouldn't have done had Gerard not been a part of things and he'd bought the one armed man in himself.
It was my dad who got me onto the show. He used to watch it on board ship in the sixties, crossing the Atlantic. He told me there were even incidents of graffiti, "The Fugitive is innocent!" in the UK (not that this was a good thing).
I would love to know what Gerard says to Kimble as they shake hands. If you look closely he mouths some words to him so does anyone know what his character is saying??
There will never make a series like this ever again....Hollywood doesn't have the actors nor writers with this much talent. This is one of the best shows during the best times of America. Our best times are now gone, but thanks to dvd's we can still re-live these great tv shows. RIP Mr. Janssen
I would have expected a apology from Gerard, especially considering the many times in the first 2 seasons that I have seen this far saying the his story was a fantasy and he is guilty.
Now I haven't seen the complete series yet, only seasons 1 and 2 thanks to DVD (I saw these episodes in 1993 when the movie came out and have been searching years for the rest. Thankfully DVD is taking care of that)
THANK YOU CHANCE!!!! I was 12 years old when this series started. I remember watching many episodes, they did not have the same impact as they have recently. I waited until I had seen all episodes available before I watched the Judgement, (again). Thank you for posting this clasic series. Wasn't the acting tops in this series? Barry Morse and David Janson were the perfect choice, but so many other 'not so well knowns' appeared, turned out to be a 'who's who in entertainment' list!
Tueday---September 5th---the day the running stopped. Richard Kimble should have sued the whole damn police department for making his life a living Hell but that's another series.......
I COMPLETE AGREE. By today's standards he would have owned the whole town of Stafford Indiana after suing them for wrongful conviction and 4 years of hell.
David Janssen didn't live long to see The Fugitive made into a hit feature film with Harrison Ford as well as a short-lived revival with Tim Daly; he died in 1980.
See the blond-haired woman with the dark top at the right of the screen as Janssen, etc., are walking down the courthouse steps? That's Janssens' real-life sister.
Thanks! Did you know that Lt. Gerard (Barry Morse) was actually born in England, and spoke with a very pronounced accent? He certainly did an expert job of hiding it for The Fugitive series, didn't he?
Visiting the grave would have been a nice touch. Powerful end to a powerful show. Top notch in every dept, season after season. I read somewhere years ago that up until the moon landing this was the most watched moment on TV. And it was the most watched episode of a TV show until the last episode of MASH. THANKS for posting this awesome footage! :)

That's it.

@BRUC2016
Well I wouldn't say every episode was filled with High Drama and suspense. But I haven't watched the entire series yet. I am only on Season 3 volume 2 just past the episode where Kimble learns the one armed mans name.
Great, amazing show, but there are some real boring episodes though. Most of the episodes so far are great, there are a few which just seem to take forever.
snake2006 1 year ago
@snake2006 I grew up in a home where both of my parents were Fugitive fanatics. Actually, both of them
were TV addicts, but they especially loved this show.. So I watched every episode with them.
Maybe every episode wasn't riveting, but David Janssen's persecuted character was so eloquently underplayed that you were constantly cheering for him. He played perhaps the best underdog role in TV
history...but I'm sure there are others that just don't come immediately to mind.
BRUC2016 1 year ago
@BRUC2016
Then came the DVD's after TV land took it off, which is allowing me to see the complete series.
snake2006 1 year ago
@BRUC2016
The rest is garbage.
snake2006 1 year ago
@snake2006 This is the power & beauty of satellite radio & DVDs & Cable TV. OLD STUFF NEVER DIES! I also appreciate movies and music that were created before I was born. Humphrey Bogart movies, for instance. I always had tastes that were a little out of step with my age group. TV way back when relied on plot and character development. Are you a fan of The Twilight Zone? There were actually some shows that appealed to the intellect. (But I always preferred Maryanne over Ginger).
BRUC2016 1 year ago
@BRUC2016
Mary Anne was super hot. Ginger is too high maintence for me.
As for Twilght Zone. I have seen the occasional episode but not every one of them. Not a bad show.

@BRUC2016 ... Oh, yes ... How absolutely right you are. THAT was TV -- good TV, way back when the networks and entertainment executives were artists first, and businessmen second. As for Gerard.
Remember he didn't have to give Kimble 24 hours to find the one-armed man. He could have just taken him to jail.
Also he gave Kimble his revolver when Gerard was shot and wounded. Why would he do that if he didn't believe Kimble was innocent.
Remember was Gerard said to Chandler. "We've both had a good day. We've kept an innocent man in hell for four years."
RadioNews1 2 years ago 3
Point one: Kimble said he saw a young boy fishing. Now how would Kimble have known this boy was fishing on that particular night if he wasn't there?
Point two: The one-armed man picked up a lamp and killed Helen Kimble. His fingerprints would have been on the lamp. And remember Gerard found out he was in Indiana because he was fingerprinted for a job miles away from Stafford.
Also Chandler's fingerprints were on a glass he took away from Helen Kimble when talking to her before the murder.

Just listen to the music score as Kimble turns away from Gerard. This is for all those who think the original music doesn't count!
schoduck 2 years ago
Hey schoduck, you're right, but I also like the score just BEFORE Kimble turns away from Girard; the cellos are so deep and dramatic and the sound is totally appropriate for that moment in the show. Such incredible talent, and what do we have today? Unfortunately, nothing more than memories, for the most part.
gazork123 2 years ago
Hi gazork123. What a profound statement my friend! My God what emotion and sense of thought; just with those incredible cellos and following brass and the resplendent acting chops of both Janssen & Morse!
Tuesday, September 5th; the day such incredible talent stopped!
schoduck 2 years ago
Clever gazork, how the cellos build when the patrol car approaches, then die away when the officer turns away from Kimble.
Nothing to fear anymore!
I remember bits of this from when I was 14 when it was shown in the UK. Really takes me back. That was in August '83. I have relived those moments of joy when the truth was finally to come out!
Pulsar205 2 years ago
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoy the show so much. I think it's fascinating that the show enjoyed such a loyal following worldwide. BTW, did you know that Barry Morse (Lt. Gerard) was actually English?
gazork123 2 years ago
It's not at all obvious Morse is English. He's good at the American accent and has all the mannerisms right. I bet many thought him Canadian. Perfect man for the part.
I can't get over Kimble's look of disgust when Gerard offers his hand outside the courtroom.
Pulsar205 2 years ago
I don't think Kimble was discusted with Gerard; more like he was surprised.
Remember it was Gerard that gave Kimble 24 hours to find the one-armed man. Plus he saved Kimble's life by shooting and killing the one-armed man on top of that tower.
RadioNews1 2 years ago
He probably was surprised by Gerard's assistance. I know I would be! You'd never get that from a police leutenant, and a stickler for the rules at that..exceptions will be rare.
The writers did a great job in using Gerard's occasional human side; in his light-handedness with everyone who assisted Kimble.
Pulsar205 2 years ago
But Gerard saving Kimble's life was just him doing the right thing. Kimble would be grateful for that. It was goodness in the position of authority that won the day.
Kimble shook his hand for helping him, but I'm sure he wouldn't have done had Gerard not been a part of things and he'd bought the one armed man in himself.
Pulsar205 2 years ago
Here was the man who thought he was guilty regardless and who stopped at nothing to bring him in; who upheld the law, whatever it was.
Look closely at Kimble's face at 00:30.
Pulsar205 2 years ago
It was my dad who got me onto the show. He used to watch it on board ship in the sixties, crossing the Atlantic. He told me there were even incidents of graffiti, "The Fugitive is innocent!" in the UK (not that this was a good thing).
