It's all flat out there! Easy! Retracements in WV usually traverse hills with slopes of 20-30 degrees. And I'd say that at least 3/4ths of the descriptions used slope distances, and error of closure of 1:5 is not uncommon. Though, I have seen some "chiseled X on rock" marks done in the mid 1800's come within 0.1' by total station.
