  • People need to shut up when he's playing

  • @pragmatismnotidealis Because the only way to enjoy music is in silent contemplation? I think you're missing a big part of music if that's how you feel. If I'm playing to a crowd I would love the feedback, I'm sure Don does too. How could you possibly fault people for getting into the music enough to want to voice how they're feeling?

Most musicians labour away at their music in the hopes of spreading the joy it brings them to others, and it doesn't get much more joyful than an energetic crowd.

  • @BenShTurner No, because I can't hear what he's playing. Do you break into applause every 30 seconds when someone is giving a speech, in the great american tradition of over enthusiasm?

  • @pragmatismnotidealis If this were a studio recorded album I'd agree with you, but this this is a live recording from a venue. DVD's like this are made to capture the magic you don't get from a studio recorded album.

The performance was for the audience, who enjoyed it, as did Don. If you want to hear the song without the live setting ambiance, then you probably shouldn't be watching a DVD of a Live performance. I'm not trying to pick fights, it just struck me as an odd thing to complain about.

  • @BenShTurner What magic? His whole album that this song is off is live and the audience clap at the end... it comes from the latin audio.. to LISTEN. jesus man get your head out of your arse!

  • @pragmatismnotidealis The song is high energy and it's meant to get people going, I'm terribly sorry your little world was broken because a few people got enthusiastic during a concert. But it's you who needs to get your head out of your arse.

Do you get pissed off at stand up comedy shows when people wont stop laughing too? How dare they ruin YOUR enjoyment. Grow the fuck up and let it slide, perhaps even join in the fun. You might enjoy life a bit more.

  • Reminds me of Beauty and the Beast... But i'm pretty sure that Beauty can't play guitar...

  • Lol!! Awesome Led Zeppelin homage at 1:46

  • The reactions at the start say it all... "woahhh... yeah!!"

  • @HaythemMohamed Was totally my reaction too!

  • this guy is awesome!

  • they were live in toronto?

    FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • i love the joke. Afraid to Dance, a title of a song of high groove. :D

  • i cant hold back the smiles don's playing forces them out of me!!!

  • smell that? that just the guitars ass bein' shreded.

"KTHAXSTFU" you sound like a little immature high school girl who is just psm'ing the day away...

  • @mvdiablo zzzz just enjoy his amazing talent u silly fool and just dont talk. Cheers.

  • this song reminds me of " michael michael michael." any one else agree?

  • @brennanryan89 yeah they are very similar

  • I'm not sneering at Don Ross! I think he's terrific! But, I believe that these "acoustic" guitar with on-board mics can make certain techniques more useable than a guitar played through an external mic.

Let's look at it another way. If Don Ross was in the sudio recording "Afraid to Dance", and could only use one mic, which would he choose?

I bet he would definitely use a internal mic inspite of the fact that an external mic - used alone - would give a more natural, truer sound.

  • @musik102

your initial comment was that it wasnt even a genuine acoustic guitar and that if it were you'd be amazed if Don could play the same piece on a "genuine" acoustic- an absurd and idiotic insult to both Don Ross and luthier Marc Beneteau. Why can't you grasp this- it's not difficult. were you to be sitting in front of Don playing this tune you'd here the same as you hear on this video. the contribution of the internal mic to the technicalities of playing this tune are precisely nil.

  • No,no! Once you place a mic inside a guitar everything changes! For example, if I tap on the fingerboard of a guitar that has a mic attached to it, then an onboard mic is a lot more sensitive to that tapping than mic placed some distance form the guitar. Even if that distance is only 6 ins.

Or, put another way, if someone was playing a purely acoustic guitar in your livingroom, it's a different animal than same guitar with a mic attached played through an amp/speaker.

  • @musik102

you were, in a condescending and sneering way, suggesting that the electronics in Dons guitar made it possible for him to make the sounds he does. you are totaly wrong and incapable of being told so.

you are also wrong about mic placement. I have two melville guitars with condenser mics on the end of the fingerboard it makes not the slightest difference to the effect of tapping on the fingerboard. my greenfield has a mic in a simmilar place to don's...same deal.

  • @mcmanustony Just want to interject that I am very jealous of your guitar collection....

  • But, you must agree that it amplifies it differently than a mic.

Also, there are lots of sounds that plugged in guitarists get that wouldn't work well on an unplugged guitar. Examples? Tommy Emmanuel's "scratching" near the bridge, and lots of percussive striking of the body just wouldn't be as affective on an unplugged guitar; although the blessed Bob Brozman gets some great unplugged percussive sounds - but that's from a metal bodied guitar.

  • @musik102

look carefully at 1 second into the video. do you see that thing in the sound hole. the little white thing- actually it's metallic. Do you know what that is? It's a....gasp....microphone. you are listening to an acoustic guitar. to suggest othewise is just absurd.

tommy's techniques have no bearing here. though maybe you'd dispute the skill needed for that since it's plugged in?

  • Acoustic guitar? Ask Bob Brozman if he thinks it qualifies as an acoustic guitar!

  • @musik102

or I could ask my friend and world class acoustic luthier Marc Beneteau who built the guitar. Bob Brozman? why? what does bob's opinion have to do with it? it's obviously an acoustic guitar as he would agree.

you rather sneeringly suggest that Don's sound is dependent on electronics and you are wrong. all the system in don's guitar does is AMPLIFY whats happening acoustically.

  • haha DR is the best! i like how at the end he bows the guitar

  • he should be afraid to dance ^^

  • wickedest fourth harmonic!!!

  • Heavy metal acoustic guitar

  • @1962RJP

it's called heavy wood, my friend

  • caught myself applauding.

    this is freakin amazing.

  • @idomtalan fail

  • @Artthas3 What the f@@k are you talking about?

  • Why won't my guitar do that?

  • @capnpablo

its not the guitar its player my friend.

  • @capnpablo : It will bro! Just have faith and make your guitar your third hand! :-)

  • @capnpablo Hahah

  • @capnpablo your guitar wants to know why you dont do that to it

  • @abfplano54 Hahah! Best reply ever!

  • @capnpablo Maybe it can... he has an instructional DVD of this song on his website. Check it out...

  • @capnpablo hahahaahaha

  • @capnpablo It's kind of disheartening to see it sitting there, and know it's capable of this but will never achieve it isn't it :(

  • @capnpablo I guess would be bad user ;)

  • @capnpablo coz you are doing that

  • AWESOME!!!!! with i could do that

  • It's unfortunate so many people think that the guitar is an instrument meant for strumming chords behind bad vocals.

  • is that a baritone? cause the tuning is EEDEEE and you can´t play that on baritone with a normal tuned high e-string??!

  • @lennarddudelu

The tuning is "EBDEBE" and it's not a baritone! =)

  • @ZebMacahan

Is this the same model as in Micheal, Micheal, Micheal?

  • OmGod Amazing

  • I don't believe in God but I PRAY that he gets together with Bireli at some point.

  • @upabittoolate Lagrene? They would certainly be an interesting match.

  • @HarmPoy Definitely. I think some might go into it assuming that Ross isn't a jazz guy but jazz actually is folk music; it's very complex but it's still folk music. I also got to see Lagrene doing some acoustic stuff once. I think they'd mesh well. It also seems like Lagrene sorely misses his mentor.

  • I so air guitaried to this :L

  • WTF @ 2:16

  • i didnt know santa clause could play guitar

  • i should try to steal his beard so i can play like that!

  • "You're a wizard, Harry!"

    *breaks out guitar*

  • @ryushiRj38 HAH

  • thumbs up for the harmonic at 2:16!

  • @sydneybmx Thumbs up for the whole Don Ross!!!

  • @sydneybmx

yeah - simply amazing how he pops such a clear ringing harmonic at the third fret.

  • @latinumbavariae

ahhh.. finally got it, its fiftth fret on the second string...

  • @latinumbavariae

ahhh.. finally got it, its fiftth fret on the second string...

oh no wrong... its almost fourth on the first... ahhhrrg...

  • he's a god!

    Or a wizard I don't really know.

  • go hagrid! go hagrid!

  • Of course, he's not playing an acoustic guitar! It's plugged in! If he could achieve this on a genuine acoustic instrument that would be something!

  • @musik102 If you were standing next to him, plugged in or not, that song sounds exactly like it does here. It has nothing to do with the electronics.

  • @musik102

no of course it's not an acoustic guitar. clearly it's a lawnmower.

  • even if he beats the crap out of a guitar he still manages to get an awesome melody out of it...

  • hagrid owns this guitar.... he's awesome!

  • I wonder how many guitar he has broken?

  • im ripped and the beginning literally scares me

  • @QuisPiss I saw the older video of this song when I was high out of my mind. It was a great introduction to Don.

  • Afraid to dance...perhaps yes, but not to PLAY!

  • the little lick at 1:57 is orgasmic!
