I love anything The Verve do. I'm probably being disgracefully thick, but does anyone know what the video is about? The 'pirate' and old-style costumes 'n' all that. Thanks x
Such a heartrending and soulful song. It so perfectly conveys our universal need for love and meaning, and how all of our searching will inevitably end some time, leaving us with a faint imprint on our consciousness of the scant moments we've managed to find these things for ourselves. Richard Ashcroft emotes in his delivery of every word of this song, never allowing the feeling to pass or become diluted. Just achingly beautiful.....
this song ... is ... my thoughts verbalized and made into a soothing melody. omg i love the verve, richard ashcroft, and this song. and bittersewet symphony too. this is what I call music.
The Verve IS an English alternative rock band fortunately. It is just great that they are performing together again! This song is touching indeed, it makes me feel sad. I guess that is just what their songs do, they can make you addicted too music :)
and he's from wigan I saw him at the isle of white and he kept talking about killing himself, I kept shouting "pies" at him. He is pretty good though. john from wigan
yeah this is fast becoming my favourite verve song. i want to dedicate it to everyone who is going to see the verve on december 17 at the Odyseey in belfast.
Verve videos up to this point were hit-or-miss -- usually just "let's take drugs and go drive somewhere" -- but this one, as evident from the first few seconds (where they walk past each other, turn from each other, stare off into space dejectedly , etc) -- this was a bulls-eye ... the non-band segments reinforce that alienation beautifully. Haunting images for a haunted song.
Yeah, the acoustic version awesome, couldn't find it on youtube though. a coworker of mine had some burned cd of them live and that's how I got it. I wouldn't know where else to get it except maybe limewire although I don't use that program anymore.
i used to DJ public radio and came across this song before i ever heard bittersweet symphony. this is by far better in my opinion. that and it holds a very special place in my memories.. ah, nostalgia!

Best Verve-songs ever:
Lucky man, on your own, The drugs dont work, bitter sweet symphonie, sonnet and maybe historie..
This band was damn good, ashcroft makes fantastic music, but he is arrogant and bigheaded, unfortunately..

maybe he is arrogant and bigheaded but he's got confidence and, better yet, he's got pure, unmistakable talent. He should have a big head.
