  • thanks this has helped others feel how i feel. great video

  • that is a great example of what I go through all the time. No one understands why I can't study if they are watching TV, or talking, etc...

  • i have full blown tourettes, i got first four answers first time with interference, but even without it, i couldnt get last ones...guess i musta trained my mind well enough to get part of it atleast, thx tictionary, you did a great job on mental tics. Its such a challenge, between the mental and physicals for me, so this was nice to see someone attempting to show how difficult it can be.

  • Hey I don't get this.... I have never heard of mental tics before. I found the joe shoes passage very difficult to comprehend. Does this suggest I have mental tics?

Thought it was like a sensory overload thing. Also with the silence leading up to the passage it coaxed me into concentrating with only silence.

As for all this talk about cursing during prayer is that a typical mental tic?

  • I have the same kind of intrusive thoughts.... And some of mine involve cursing too! (I read info. to the side) lol. I recently had these intrusive thoughts that every time someone I like started talking to me I start cursing them out in my head. And it drove me nuts! But thankfully that one has been better lately. :) I also get the kind where my mind will keep saying a curse word while I'm trying to pray, so I have to always say my prayers out loud now...

  • @Kristiniskool: I get that while trying to pray too. I still pray in my head but quickly apologise and continue. I know that God knows I'm not swearing at Him or even doing it deliberately.

  • My six year boy was diagnosed with Tourette's this week. He also has ADHD. I am trying to learn everything I can to help him. It's so hard to imagine what it's like for him. This video gave me an idea of how difficult it must be.

  • very interesting indeed. . . first try i got 2 out of 6 and 2nd try i got 4 out of 6 lol..

i remember i used to have tics when i was a child . . such as biting my hand. . .or movement in my eyes and nose/mouth . . . but i dont have them anymore. . i guess i learned how to control them because at times they were embarrasing. nice vid.:D

  • the first time i got 5 written down and 2 right. the second time i got 6 and got 6 right.

this was interesting for me, to watch and learn. i love your videos, and how you are willing to put these things up to help people understand. (:

    woo! =]

  • I couldn't concentrate for anything!!! I got Andy as a name and that was all! Good god that would be hard to deal with!

  • Really interesting video

My first score was 3 and the second was 6

If your purpose was to instill some empathy in those who don't suffer from this, you have succeeded :)

  • Is it usually colors that you have in your head?

Do you think that could be in part due to synaesthesia? (sp?) oh and i looked it up after watching that video and it seems like every six i come across is orange. i figured you noticed but i just thought it was strange.

  • It's not usually colours any more, no. Not as mental tics, anyway. I don't think they're linked to synaesthesia, but you never know.

About the sixes: do you mean you see sixes as being orange or do you mean lots of other people with synaesthesia have orange sixes?

If you mean the latter, there do appear to be interesting trends. For example A tends to be red in a lot of people.

  • Yea I didn't think it was because of synaesthesia, but it seems probable if you actually have colors playing through your head as you read.

I don't have synaesthesia at all but i did look it up and read up on it after seeing your other video and i just noticed on every example i saw the 6 was orange. Oh and another random question, would a color by number annoy you if the colors didn't match yours?

Just wondering, keep up the videos :)

  • i dont have tourrets but this was hella challenging still

  • That's the idea - it's supposed to help people without Tourette syndrome understand Tourette syndrome (and, specifically, mental tics) a bit better. I hope you found it interesting :)

  • it was interesting indeed, and yea, i understand it now thanks

  • This was cool, but flashing text gives me a really severe headache for some reason- I guess that was your purpose, huh? Not trying to be mean. I have TS. It really does feel like this. When I tic, I also have difficulties talking articulately- I try not to talk when I tic, but for some reason, I tic less when I talk fast.

  • I had corprolalia and echolalia tics for a while (I was watching a ton of Monty Python at the time, and I remember freaking a restaraunt waiter out once by saying "albatross" when it was a vegetarian restaraunt. Also, it was not too pleasant to be repeating "liberal rubbish" in the state where I live where I'm pretty sure they'd stone you if you say anything anti-Obama (if you don't know who Barack Obama is, look him up)).

  • Now the outbursts have gotten lower in volume for some reason (back to the way they were before, actually), but the feeling is still the same of a voice inside my head.

  • as a little kid i wouldnt talk because of my tics. vocally or motor. which im constantly doing. i repeat others and myself. as a kid my parents taught me sign language and thats how i currently communicate. i very rarely speak. and when i do its only to certain people. mom dad brothers sisters... close people...

  • wow, i never really understood the complexities of tourettes.

I have no disorders or syndromes of any kind and have an IQ of 148 so when reading and answering the second time i got every question right without even paying much attention

honestly though which the simulation i could only concentrate half the time, barely read half of it, and only answered 2 questions right.

i have to say though, anyone who can lead a half way decent life with tourettes is stronger than anyone i know in my book

  • Thank you very much for you comment. I really appreciate it. I'd love to know my IQ. With which organisation did you test yours with? (Just interested, sorry if I'm being nosy!). I took the High IQ Society's test and achieved 126 but I'd like to do a proper one under exam conditions (although on second thoughts that would probably distract me!).

  • Well done. I thought I got 4 = Yellow, apparently not. Mone are counting compulsions and song lyrics i'll sing, I also squint at punctuation or dots.

  • It's so frustrating, I got to 20 thinking everything detremental to my livelyhood was OCD, most of it was tics, indicative of Tourettes, OCD, Aspergers syndrome and Irlen syndrome (Light river patterns, blurring visual distortions.) Mixed neurological conditions. This video was a very good idea and will be helpful to exemplify one difficulty to my mother.

  • Thanks :) I'm glad you found it useful :)

  • So by mental tics you mean OCD? I have tourettes. Are vocal tics eaiser for you to supress the motor ones? They are for me for some reason.

  • There's a huge overlap between tics and compulsions - I've been trying to get my head round it for ages. Many people would call them compulsions, but I call them complex mental tics, because they're more automatic than compulsions and happen to get rid of a feeling rather than a thought. But you're right, they could also be classified as compulsions.

I do have a vocal tic which is like a grunt, but it is more suppressable than my motor tics.

  • (Cont.) However, I do have breathing tics which are not at all easy to suppress. Some say breathing tics are classed as vocals, some say they are motor tics. In a way, all tics are motor tics, but vocal tics are just motor tics of the larynx (voice box).

  • Yes I do.

  • that was a very good video will definatly help people to understand. i got 2 answers written down the first time and they were both wrong and second time i got 3 answers written down and 2 were right so im not that good anyways lol but good idea great job

  • Thanks :)

  • As a Tourette I got the answers the first time. Is this due to my highly concentrated mind (I can concentrate verey strong in peaks) and the fact that I have Tourettes ? Very good simulation though !! Can I use it to pass on ?

  • You may certainly pass it on! :)

Go on, spread a bit of education! Let's hope it helps others understand :)

  • Thank you so much for being so informative! I think this was an excellent simulation and it got the point across. I feel like I have some insight and I thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and post it. Best.

  • Thanks :)

I'm glad it was useful and informative :-D

  • i think it's really wonderful that you're doing all this public education, since so many people out there are completely clueless about tourettes. not only are you brave for putting this up on the internet, but you're also incredibly intelligent! this seems like it could be a real psychological/neurological test :)

btw, oliver sacks has some amazing case stories about tourettes - like a tourette surgeon/pilot, drummer, etc. i recommend his books (if you haven't read them already).

  • Thanks :)

I worry a bit that someone I know will see the videos and think I'm weird or treat me differently or make fun of me, but if it helps others...

Did the simulation work for you? I mean, did it get the point across? I wouldn't really know, seeing as I already know what mental tics are like, so I haven't really any idea of how effective the simulation is.

Anyway, thanks again for your comment, and I'm glad you like the videos :)

  • 4. i dont read about a flower stall (i read till color RED, then the questions came)

    5. + 6. like 4. answer.

i write them here, so i do not change the answers.

  • 1.55 do you/the person who read, reads the text in the same language? it sound like other language and other text.

    about the questions:

(i dont stopped the video or play again, when questions came. and i cant read the whole text, maybe because i am german (but i speak english good and also can read it))

    1. i dont remember that a person/a name was in the text

    2. i dont understand you question.

    3. i read the color blue. but i dont know what should be blue.

  • The sound recording is an auditory (sound) representation of what it going on in one's head when one is experiencing mental tics. It is not reading what is being shown on the screen - that's the point.

With a mental tic, one's internal thoughts stops one from concentrating on what one is doing (in this case reading).

I have a friend who is German. Maybe I can ask her to help me make a German version of this video. She is very busy at the moment though.

  • ok. i thought the person reads the text, but i can read, which he say. ok its other text.

    about german version: thx.

i also write the 4.-6. answer here, its in my secod text.

  • Ich habe begonnen, eine deutsche Version. Ich habe die Stelle der englische Text mit deutschen, aber noch nicht die Rede :)

  • yes, that was very informative and hopefully will show others how difficult it can be to have tics.

    Well done.:-)

  • Thank you :)

  • Your very welcome...:-)

I know from experience how difficult it is to stand up and tell people about yourself.

I saw your comment to Ukburger about his tourettes and thats how I found your video.

He is my grandson and yes he does have copralalia.

Much more should be known about tourettes, then hopefully it will be easier for the people that have it, and for them to be treated in a respectfull manner.
