@jackie20ization you can connect any external hard drive via the usb on the ps3.
Or you can replace the standard factory internal hard drive. This option provides a smoother experience when trying to access any of the data. And you can sort the music/photos/videos with the play station software if the data is on the internal hard drive.
@wmanns11 can i ask, i have the ancient 55gb ps3 (the one that can play ps2 games), anyway, i have run out of room being 55 gigs. just bought a 1tb external hardrive. now i know i have to format that external hdd into FAT32. but can i store new games data on the new drive? (gt5 was a healthy 8.5 gigs) as well as save data etc etc.does that make sense?
I am afraid not. All game data must be installed onto the internal hard drive. Some save game files can be copied onto external storage, but like gt5 developers have prevented this since people could then share 100% completed game files.
woah youtube posted my comment 3 times? Odd. Also I got the ps3 in 2009 Aug probably, and it's only been played max 70 hours after 8 months. I don't got any games rofl.
@FreezingHazard That was me, had to spread my reply into three comments. Why haven't you got any games? Not even an exclusive. I'm about to sell 6 of mine.
@FreezingHazard That was me, had to spread my reply into three comments. Why haven't you got any games? Not even an exclusive. I'm about to sell 6 of mine.
your ps3 in this vid is around 120x faster than mine in loading animated thumbnails, I've got the pre-slim 80gb model and i'm convinced that hardware wise yours is better, I can't figure it out.
Got any tips? Did you do something to the settings ? This is just odd.
@FreezingHazard Well there are a number of possibilities. I am not a technical expert but the hard drive in the PS3 at the time of recording was relativity new. But i had a fresh look at it now, 2 years old and I can't tell of any significant difference.
@FreezingHazard My initial thought was it may be due to the relative length of the video; i.e. if its 2 hour movie or an HD file then the PS3 might take a bit more time to load the icon compared to that of say a 20 minute south park episode. Also if you set your own; i.e. 'change icon' to a specific section then the PS3 might already have it 'saved'.
@FreezingHazard Without trying to sound like a helpline. If you continue to have extensive loading times with any aspect in relation to the hard drive then it may be beginning to fail. This shouldn't happen in the first couple of years but it isn't uncommon.
I don't have the 80GB model but i understand it was built similarly to the 40GB, which is meant to be more reliable.
Unless there is a corruption in the original hard drive then no the only thing it may change depending on the one you replace it with is the capacity. Assuming you replace it with with a standard 5400 rpm Hard drive, you could get a 7200 rpm HD and probably notice very little difference. The only major increase in speed would occur if you replaces it with a relatively expensive per GB Solid State Hard Drive. I've seen tests and don't think its worth the money.
can you still use an external hard drive with your origonal internal hard drive? in other words, will teh ps3 be able to read data from both hard drives? say i have a game on the internal hard drive and another game on teh exterior hard drive, will i still be able to play both games, whenever i want?
Yes there should be no problem reading data from either an internal or external hard drive through the PS3, I have only played demos off the internal hard drive. From my understanding the reading speed through USB 2.0 on external HD is too slow to stream play games, especially PS3 games.
if you want know video quality loss and not worried about hard drive space you can rip your movies to .vob file with dvd shrink then just change the extenstion to .mpg no need to convert it. its same quality as dvd's
Back up DVD using a computer lots of different free software, atm i'm using 'HandBrake' I suggest youtubing for tutorials thats how I learn't to use it, but you could just play around.
Thanks. Yeah, I dont know how but it resorted to ugly 480p resolution. I went to restore default settings and it allowed me to go back to 1080. You're video was my inspiration/guide for getting an external 1tb western digital external hd that easily connects to my ps3 and kicks ass. btw, I'd also recommend playing Infamous if u havent had a chance. Great game.
Mate if i wasn't skint I would buy it without regrets, the demo was mint and all my firends thought it was better than Prototype, although I haven't played it. Atm I wana finish Jerico, I know its old but it was cheap interesting and in 1080p. I love my cars so I waiting for GT5 to come out rumored 27th of Nov.
Help! I don't know if my PS3 reverted back to default settings or the HD cable is not registering, but I turned my PS3 on and the options (video, music, etc.) font is big, bulky and weird instead of sleek and small like how your's shows on your video. It has never done this before!
Simples; it may not have completely resorted to default settings, from what you tell me assumming you have it on an HD monitor or TV, the resolution has resorted back to default of 480p or which ever is the lowest. To resolve this go to Display settings and then video output settings and automatic, once the PS3 and checked your connection you should be given a list of resolution options check all boxes avaliable it should then default to the highest avaliable.
Sry if that obvious, if you've done that already, check physical connection or the TVs display settings. It may have streched the image for viewing any TV output, should be able to see the same problem with TV channels. But if not that then I am affraid I am spent. If theres any more info I am happy to help. Cheers for asking I haven't been able to play on mine for a month.
The Family Guy is mine, box set from a christmass and more recently through amazon and eBay. Share collection with my brother, the American Dad is his and the films in general are a mix of mine my parents and brother and sisters. Unfortunatly they fail 2 see the benifit of digital transformation and won't let keep the PS3 in the lounge. In the video its at Uni on my BenQ 24" monitor, 7/10 reviews image quality not brill bt it has all the right connections + is only £180 Sry to waffle I miss it.
Sry l8 reply, busy playing on the only console I have ever owned since I was only fortunate enough to afford it when I was 17. Later I got a job and earn a little to get the cheapest 1080p monitor available at the time. Thats how I treat myself.
ok you have to be mistaken the reply thing cuz i just cant understand why the hell i have written that comment or maybe its not for you it maybe was for someone in the comments {sorry}
I haven't crack/hacked/or 'jailbroken' my PS3 so never tried installing whole games on any kind of HD, I can only imagine where there is a will there is a way which has been recorded and on YouTube.
To 654views, you can save demos and saved game files on the internal HHD, I don't know if you can, since I have never tired, to save them on an external HHD, but since there is no obvious option I don't think you could directly. I may be wrong since I can remember copying saved files and replays from the PS2 to flash sticks, I imagine you could do the same to an external HHD as well provided it is formated to FAT32.
If you have it externally enjoy the FAT32 format cause it is relatively poor. Plus are those backfilms = £25k of DVDs if they are any good.
And I believe there is enough on there to satify me. I don't think I would enjoy sorting through all my films through the rather inadequate PS3 interface. Cheers for the comment.
That is a wierd problem, I haven't used it for web browzing for ages, I am not gona be unable to help till I get back on my PS3 so sry for now. If you got time I would format and re-set to default settings, till I get back good luck.
Provided you have updated your PS3 since it was releast then you simply need to press triangle when watching the video and go across to change icon third in from right top row.
Thanks! I have my PS3 updated, and I tried what you told me to do. I found the change icon button, but it's not highlighted. When I hit "X" nothing happens.
I have two full length Divx movies on an external drive playing through my PS3. Both movies are in a folder that I named "Video". I also have to jpg images in that "Video" folder that I want to use as icons. There is also a Photo folder on my external hard drive with some pictures. Anyway I play the movie and hit the triangle. I see the button that says Change Icon but it's not highlighted. Perhaps the jpg pictures have to be in a different format to be used as icons?
I was assuming from the beginning that your videos were on the internal hard drive I personally havent tried esactly what you've done but I think that may be our difference and understandably the PS3 probably wouldn't create something like an icon which is applicable to the PS3 on a temporary file (external USB hard drive) if possible try copying it over then try again.
I copied a few movies over to my PS3 hard drive and the change icon worked! It's too bad that I change the icons when I play my movies off of my external hard drive.
Its directly proportional to 2 optional variables, one the quality you want (max 4.7Gb literally coping the DVD) and the length of the video (average 1h45m) so at an acceptable quality you might squeeze into a CD at 700mb, but on the whole your talking just under 900mb each, obviously LOTR is near enough 1.5GB each. There probably is an exsact amount for every minute of video but I don't know it. This is using either a licenced (rip off) 'official' DVD ripper, good luck, or VLC player.
What?! By the sounds of it you need to get VLC and try out some rips, won't always work you got to snyc the video and audio. Cept it is completely free, cause its not a dedicated program which requires a liecence so thats why other DVD rippers cost money. Unfortuanly VLC can't to absolutly everything, you'll need to fine tune what type of output you create if you plan to do a lot of back up copies.
Each time I have attempted getting large USB flash drives they fail, so I partitioned 25GB of my external hard drive and formatted it to FAT32 which is what the PS3 can read. But when you plug it in on the home screen of the PS3 select the USB drive and press triangle then select 'Display All', then it should show the files which you can then copy over. I haven't always managed to get ever thing trasfered casue I not sure which file types can be read, if possible keep files to .avi and Divx.
Well i dono how long we could make it since it might overheat and that red ring of death happens again to yours. I gess i could make a 'pic' vid or something
