I have a few 10/22's in different formats and never had this happen to me with a 10/22 but ive have a .22 ar upper on a good lower pop a fragment of something out the bolt and hit me below the eye it had a loud pop when it happened.
Remington totally disgraced itself. The quality fell through the floor. And the GM said he doesn't consider Canada as a viable market. I'm not gonna buy anything of Remington now.
I have a ruger 10/22 and had the exact same thing happen to me. Not sure why, but I have since put 500 or so rounds through it and no problems. Scared the crap out of me though.
i had a batch of ammo do that they put twice the amount of powder in the round i shot them all cause they were haling ass. they had to be shooting 1800 fps with 40 grains top i can see the bullet with 1260 fps but i couldn't even see these.
This happened to me! My wife was shooting it and it did the exact same thing. It blew the extractor out and I had to pay to repair it. 65 dollars to put in a new extractor and extractor spring.
@TheyxSeexMexTrollin 10/22 is a way superior gun... i have a hard time calling the 597 a gun... its made all of plastic. i bought a 597, i had to sell it because it was a disgrace to my gun collection.
@faceindisguise85 Its a shame they dont make guns like they used to. Remington is good for most shottys, but ive never heard anything about the rifles. How much did it cost? That probably plays a roll. 10/22 (base carbine, walnut stock, blued barrel), runs about 210.
@TheyxSeexMexTrollin bought from Dicks sporting goods, the 597 new cost $189. So i encourage anybody to spend the extra few dollars and buy a quality rifle.
I had a 597 blow on my too one time. The gun will fire without having the bolt fully closed. So if it jams and you are not aware, she will go off if you pull the trigger. The are a bad design but i do like mine.
Your bolt wasn't in full battery return after your third shot. It was just slightly open. With the pressure from firing the fourth shot it blew out the ejection port.
It's not the ammo! It just happened to me after 300 rounds through the gun since new. Problem is that the trigger will engage with the bolt pulled back as much as 1/4" or even a bit more. If anything keeps the bolt from getting all the way forward, the round will be held to the bolt face and it will fire! Without the support of the chamber you'll get a blowout just like the guy in the video. Wear your shooting glasses like I did! I contacted Remington about this...
Like others this Exact same thing happened to me twice!, Blew extractor and mag out and cracked shitty plastic receiver.Mine was clean as a whistle aswell.Brought a marlin 795 and never looked back
I used to have a 597. I saved all the boxs of ammo i had got for it. and after i sold it i looked through it all and blasted 112k rounds over the coarse of time. I never had this to happen with it. BUT i did learn they are picky about having a clean bolt face around the firing pin.Makes all the difference. Also, get some fine steel wool and polish the rods the springs rides on. makes all the difference. they also love the CCI Mini-Mag ammo.
@Rottmad do not buy this gun... i bought one got it home took it apart to find that the entire inner workings of the gun are made of plastic. guns are not suppose to be made of plastic!! my first trip up north i took it to a gravel pit to do some shooting and before i even put 1 magazine though it the firing pin broke. i sent it to Remington and they did fix it, but a brand new gun shouldnt have to be serviced. i sold it to gander mountain and bought a ruger 10/22
@Rottmad I have a Ruger 10/22 and use all types of ammo and shoot a lot of rounds and have had that happen plenty of times its the ammo your shooting if u buy and use the bulk 550s and so on you will experience this often might get a little un burnt powder in your face and a bang... but im still here to tell the info so im not worried just try and inspect your ammo before u shoot and keep your gun clean and all is well if you ask me..
Same thing happened to me. Then the gun-snob @ the warranty shop says, in a faggy voice "weeeeellll you have to clean it!!!!). I keep my arms so clean the friggin' boy in the bubble can eat off them.
@percykirby2 Same thing, I was told that the detonation happens because of residue build up around the feed ramp...bullcrap!!! Like you, someone can eat off my guns!
Yep shitty Winchester sub sonic ammo nearly lost my eye and hearing ..... Blew extractor pin plunger And spring out... Use only Remington ammo now much cleaner than super x and Eley subs
Have had this happen with Australian Winchester ammo.Just blows the back end of the case clean of.Other possibility is the case wasnt formed correctly and was able to be fired out of battery, also a dirty throat of the chamber can do it.Amazing the number of people who those bolt faces, keep em clean! Moisture makes powder residue go like concrete And yes,i did have a 597,shot well, ran subsonics after some serious tweaking, biggest fault was those damn mags >:I
Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. It blew out the extractor and the ten round magazine. I had a new bolt assembly from remington which came in handy. If you just got the gun, call or email remington. They will take care of it, if your gun is still under warranty.
that same thing just happened to my 597 and blew out the extractor and i took apart and there is a whole in the bottom of the bolt. is there supposesed to be a whole and where can i get parts
@Dtank1771 yes there is supposed to be a hole in the bottom of the bolt. That was how i pried the factory extractor out when i replaced it with a high grade steel aftermarket one.I havent fired it since replaceing the extractor.Ordered mine through Brownells.Good luck

Looks like a defective round to be honest, but there are always problems with any types of .22 rounds you can buy.

scary... I know the AR15's are REALLY picky about ammo as well. They'll jam with crappy ammo but never with the good stuff. Good ammo is a must!

To every man his own taste in firearm, but why did you choose that over a 10/22? just curious. and that was the end of the gun, right?

You can tell just by the sound (or at least I can lol) that the ammo was the problem. Didn't have enough punch behind it.

Did it ever happen again????

I don't think it was the ammo at all, it seems like a feeding problems and I attribute that to the magazine.
It could be an extraction problem too.
