  • Get a radio.weighs 1 ounce and runs on a single aa battery for days. Also available in solar or wind wind up models. AM/FM/Shortwave available.

Far greater range than DTV of today.

  • I feel that your best bet is going to be radio. AM/FM, CB, and Short Wave. Since they hogged the air waves for RFID, our local broadcasts are now in digital. That ol' pigeon perch isn't gonna help us much. Also you will need to have back-up stored in a grounded microwave oven shield, should we get nuked. Communication will be very important, when the time comes.

  • I'm getting my HAM license. They've done away with the morse code part of the test and it's a simple yes and no, true or false test now. This is for the basic operator license. TV in an emergency situation to me would be to distracting, I'd have better things to worry about.

  • I love your advice Kev! Great videos keep em coming!

  • Isn't radio better to have than radio?

I can pick up a lot more radio stations than I can TV stations.

  • your right good point keep the vids coming

  • It would be interesting to see an update to this in regards to no power and trying to get HDTV signals.

  • You might consider a citizens band (CB) radio for local communication and or a HAM radio for more distant signals

  • antenna only for me. i watch probably like 0 hrs of tv a week.

  • tv sucks lately. Ever since jericho quit i got bored with it, so I just bought a lifetime supply of lotion and some gardening magazines and I have been fine ever since :)

  • I was going to mention that there will no longer be any analog broadcast starting in 2009, but I see people have already mentioned this. Personally, I will be getting a short-wave radio.

  • So shortwave it is....

    that is until they....

Use an electro magnetic pulse nuclear bomb which will destroy all forms of communication...

that's why you purchase TWO (2) shortwave radios and keep one wrapped up in a faraday cage (or aluminum)...

    Just saying!

  • I'm a big fan of handcrank shortwave radios for emergency use. You can't do much better as far as a backup that doesn't assume any sort of utility.

Earthquakes are pretty minor, btw. I've been through 4 or 5 minor ones. There's never been any major service outage. If a building doesn't actually fall on you, you are fine. In the US, tree limbs falling from trees kills more people each year than earthquakes.

  • simple, i dont have a back up! mainly because i dont get tv reception! i do have an outdoor antenna like yours, and ive tried rabbit ears, but for some reason i cant pick up any reception. i could get cable or satelite, but for as little as i watch tv i dont waste the money. so for over two years now my family has lived without tv channels. i have no clue what goes on in rest of the world, and honestly i like it this way. i worry about my life and let others worry about the rest.

  • Hey Bro.! have watched alot o your videos and they are great. Here is something to think about:

Analog tv is being shut down by feb 2009! A good ShortWave Radio is advisable if Sat is knocked out, by EMP(Electo-magnetic pulse)SW Radio can pick up stations all over te world.

jut pack in lead casing or wrap to protect aganist emp.

  • They wont be broadcasting over Wireless in Canada at least, after 2008. My backup is a Radio, and telephone if it still works.

  • what are rabbit ears

  • in the event that you are cut off from the world from the comming nwo prvoked u.s collapse you might want to not turn on a tv becuase all that will be on it is what the nwo wants you to hear anyway your best bet is to hide deep in the woods destroy that dish to they can track you with that .

and make a video about survival shelters if u have time

  • if i where to hook a tv up to a satelite dish, would it work as an antenna and get the basic channels in?

  • Don't forget the TV antenna is also good for FM radio reception.

  • 1/2

Need backups...absolutely. Only thing is, I like to plan for the worst case scenario. What if the hurricane rips up your dish and your antenna? What if you don't have or your generator is not working, or you can't get fuel for it? I think everyone should have one of those wind up emergency radios. They do AM/FM/TV audio/Shortwave, and run off a hand crank dynamo, so no need for batteries. This will work in ANY situation.

  • 2/2

A lot of them come with a flashlight, a compass, and a 5 volt DC outlet to charge your cell phone etc. I think everyone should have a radio like that and it should be in your bug out bag.

    Peace

  • That's a great idea. We got one in our house too and they only cost us like $60.

  • cb radios are still effective see you on the forums aka "shotgunken"

  • I just don't watch TV, but I do have rabbit ears for just this reason. Radio is more reliable in my opinion, short wave broadcast travel huge distances.

  • no more antennas after 2009.

  • you will still have the have and antenna after 2009 if u dont have cable, its just that the antenna will plug into the digital converter wich will then plug into yer tv

  • I phone

  • What is recommended now that the govt. is doing away with analog signal and dealing with digital exclusively?

  • this is an act to keep people from connecting with other people. google this "Real ID"

  • You can get a converter box. It will pick up the digital signals. You might even be able to get a rebate from the gov for it.
