There will never be another one like JGW, my oldest brother turned me on to him when i was young and i liked his music ever since, my heart just broked when i first heard of his passing in '96, this musical genious will be truly missed.
Thank you so much for this particular post! Brings back memories of Sweet Home Chicago and the dusty stepper sets at the 50 Yard Line on 71st and Artis' on 87th/Kimbark with the Hall of Fame DJ Herb Kent. We long so much to see the Gangster of Love again in the resurrection! One more of the long list of "true-funk soldiers" fallen in the line of duty that Prince spoke about in Musicology a few years back. Carry on, Kemosabe! LOLOL!
wow that thang is still sho-nuff mighty fine. wow i wuz in high school going to summer school in 1975 when they were jammin at dunbar high with this. had on my high waist double knit dress pants and platforms and my velvet big-apple cap and i wuz stylin. rite own time.he wuz one of the greatest soul artists back then. i wish i could bring back those days.
I first heard JGW at the first Top Rank Reading alldayer. DJ Chris Hill introduced me to "I Need It". I have loved his music ever since and especially this one.
I first got my nose opened to JGW in 1976 at 10 yrs old and every since then have loved his music and became even more enamored with his flamboyant/player style in all of its pseudo pimpishness, when I learned he hailed from Houston as I do. As saddened as I was when he passed he left a large body of work to be appreciated
I love this version over the other one I've heard. Johnny had a unique style and sound. When you heard a "Guitar" Watson song, you knew it was him before anyone had to tell you. He was a very underappreciated talent. He was definitely loved here in my hometown, Chicago. I miss Johnny and that era's music. Well, at least I have the memories. Thanks for sharing this.
I don't know if that's true. The people of my era certainly were digging Johnny when he was making these tunes. I still have some of the wax albums he made back then.
This is the jam I played in my Impala riding down the streets with the black leather seats and wind blowing through the windows on a hot summer night. "Poetry in Motion"
I like this version. Its different from the version I had on his album. Johnny Guitar Watson had it goin on. Superman Lover on a good stereo with a good bass was one of the best tunes you ever want to hear. Thanks for posting.
JGW died may 17 1996...
