  • have been to all the gabba tests since 74 and saw thommo and lillee live aimanali , thommo was truly frightening in this period and anyone at the ground could see marsh keeping 10 metres back further than to lillee , walker and gilmour . went to a sheffield shield game at the gabba in 74 and thommo bowled a bouncer which hit the top of the sight screen on the full - have never ever seen that feat done again or even heard of it being done ever by any fast bowler.

  • they invented the pelvic guard in 1869 and the first helmets were used in 1975, it took them more then 100 years to realize whats more important to protect t!!!!!

  • Helmet manufacturers worldover should always remain indebted to Thomson, Lillee, Holding and Roberts for hastening their introduction in world cricket.

Also they must thank the other great pace bowlers (from Imran, Marshall to Ambrose, Donald) for keeping the demand up at all times!

  • Without a doubt the Jeff Thomson who bowled between 1974 - 1976 is the fastest of all times. It is really easy to pick this by using the wicket-keeper / slips method of where they are standing as Thomson bowls . In this 2 year period us spectators were astounded at tests how far Rodney Marsh stood back to Thomson - 10 metres further than when keeping to Lillee who was still bowling at this time in the high 80s mph .

  • I agree to that too.

I remember one delivery from Thomson flew 10 feet above Marsh's head and still rising...

  • @isafella1 yes and it all ended with his collision with Alan Turner in late '76 in a test again Pakistan, while he was in the middle of one of his fastest spells ever. I remember watching Zaheer Abbas shitting himself that day. Thommo had one or two quick spells after coming back from injury, but was never really the same

  • @isafella1 u sure about Marsh standing that part. where did u read that ? ...the way the ball leaves the pitch is crazy...why do i not see that with modern players or is it just me ?

  • drew morphett doing commentary on the chappell clip? he must have been about 20 at the time

  • I am a great fan of Thommo. Does any one know if there is DVD based on Thommos career? Check out my vid at "aussie quarry blast"

  • cunt

  • @tikiinoz Check out ''Thommo speaks out '' on Google and there might be something there ....

  • I was hearing the commentary of greg chappel the other day and quoted an incident. It was actually mind blowing. Jeff thomson once bowled a bouncer that bounced and landed outside the boundary line! pheeeew! now I cant even imagine if that happenned! quick stuff that ain?

  • In the first world cup didn't a Thommo ball bounce of a sri lanka batsman's head for 6

  • also, there are credible reports of thommo once bowling a bouncer so hard, it dug right into the pitch. the ball was said to have later recovered by a fishing crew near african waters who say they saw the ball burst right out of ocean and rise some twenty feet before falling on deck.

  • ur sarcasm makes u sound daft....u probably missed it coz u typed it out....say those words so u can hear it...and ul know where im comin from.

  • wow i totally believe you.

i ounce bowled a bouncer so hard it burst right up your...

  • Infront of Thomson without helmet, batsman probably wanted to do suicide..

  • he is more like lastih malinga

  • i reckon shaun tait is tryin to be like thommo

  • Jeff Thomson or frank tyson dont know but Jeff Thomson was recorded at 100 mph in a wind tunnel but that was after a shoulder injury which he said slowed him down. and larwood was as fast as lee or akhtar in the old day with uncoverd pitches and larwood did not spray it about like lee can

  • yeah and that 100 mph was measured from the batting crease. today they measure the speed from release so in todays terms it was more like 110 mph which is about 180 kph.

  • No no no. speed equals distance over time. If bowlers back in the day were recorded over the distance of the entire pitch the speed would be EXACTLY the same. It's simple mathematics. .45 seconds over a distance of 22 yards is roughly 90mph. Now, .225 seconds over 11 yards is ALSO roughly 90 mph. Get my point? The ONLY disadvantage bowlers of the past had was air resistance which, only affects speed by 0-1.5 mph MAX.

  • hahahaha man im an engineering student, i think i know how it works. they use a radar gun which finds the instantaneous speed. you see, as the ball is released the air creates a drag force on the ball which means the longer its in the air, the more it slows down, its simple fluid mechanics. Also, once the ball bounces it loses even more speed. So where they measure it from makes a whole lot of difference since its not an average speed as you describe but an instantaneous speed.

  • ..Therefore, modern bowlers are timed with air friction and speed retardation just as bowlers in the past were. The ONLY difference being that bowlers in the past were timed using the entire pitch, which btw, was a method ONLY used for yorkers (to take out pitch friction) and full tosses.

  • Second, if you watch ANY cricket, you would have seen how commentators use a 'Hawkeye' program to time deliveries from the moment it leaves the bowler's hand, to the instant the ball hits the ground. With this program, not only is the right speed calculated but, the amount of speed the ball loses is taken into consideration as well...

  • lol. I've done more than enough work with bio-mechanics than you think. First of all, ICC matches require every delivery to be recorded 21 times, in different ways, before the speed of a delivery pops up on the big screen....

  • that was a good dvd. cricket through the ages 70s nice. thanks dude

  • Brett Lee owns thompson cock suckers

  • The dismissal of Tony Greig is none other than Thommo's legendary "sandshoe crusher"!!

  • Thommo was the fastest ever, the ball to Tony Greig is almost invisible

  • Looking at that action . I wonder how much his arm bend!!!!

  • biomechanists have stated that it was the purest action ever. A perfectly side on slingshot makes it impossible to bend at the elbow. Unfortunately he was a freak and nobody has been able to copy his action.

  • Thommo at his peak was scary.

  • Why helmets were introduced a couple of years later!

  • last wicket show how quick thomson was at hs peak.

  • the irony is that his shoulder got injured from an accident.. not while bowling.. looking at his action im amazed his arm is still intact

  • oh thanks for posting this!

  • thomson's kewl.

  • always wanted to see Jeff Tomo bowl

  • Great Post!

Post more of these vintage clips.
