My theory is that AFI are the Misfits/Danzig of now.

They started with fast hardcore/punk songs about say, gender reversal, darkness...

Then after a few amazing albums, they slowed down and got more atmospheric-much like after Danzig quit the Misfits However you see it, even through the changes and I'll admit the recent album was kinda disappointing-AFI are still here and killing it.

Why be such a purist immediately?

But, Honestly... Metallica makes covers sound polished and mainstream. So, basically they keep screwing up Misfits songs. That's why pop bands like Metallica should not cover good songs. AFI and NoFX did great covers though. AFI may be a little more poppish now, but at least they make good music.

AFI did the best cover imo. I actually liked the spin that NOFX tried to put on it, but the singing was weak. Metallica was the worst one, it lacked the fun punk mood and was too hard rock. Of course Misfits were the best, but AFI had the perfect cover for it.
