What sort of repercussions happen due to this type of thing? License revoked, Nasty letter from the FAA, or just a severely dented ego? I've always wondered if as a pilot you were fucked immediately if you did something in High class airspace, or if, like here, it's treated as part of the learning curve, and hope it doesn't happen again.
Firstly this is an example of "authorities' paranoia" after a prior incident (911), they keep assuming it's a "bad guy", saying things like "he's BUGGING OUT to the East", and "southbound, ON THE RUN", which is reading in malice when all it probably was is a guy who was lost probably a bit stupid, not evil.
Second, isn't every plane in the sky supposed to have a transponder? Clearly this one didn't, since they didn't know his ID or altitude, so no TCAS either? That's very bad, fix that please
@malamagr If the plane did not have a transponder that REALLY needs to be fixed like yesterday. however as far as you saying the authorities are being paranoid, to that i say after an incident like 9/11 where we were attacked in such a sickening and unexpected manor, a little caution is not to be unexpected OR overstated.
@Tex24Whiskey I totally agree. Flying through NY Airspace is pretty insane. Looking at the islands like you pointed out is quickly easy to mix up. BUT the pilot in my head might have noticed that its the wrong airport due to the sheer size of JFK. Flying to Republic is tricky when it comes to airspace and he's clearly violating all of class B airspace. There's so many factors that can come into play on this scenario that its nuts.
Attention "aviation-non-experts" who are ready-n-quick to pluck feathers from a brother!
I'm a NYC-area-based pilot of over 20 years intimately familiar with the area in and around B-space. I've never had an episode of spacial-disorientation over NY's congested airspace nor do I plan to but, it doesn't mean it won't ever happen.
Are you so self-righteous you're incapable of committing error?! The RV pilot was indeed a transgressor. Could you as a transient make the same mistake? Absolutely! :/
Apparently this guy is still having trouble maintaining a decent heading. Go to flightware(dot)com and enter the n-number...5025G. His track log for his most recent flight (today) is squiggly lines. I'm pretty sure the guy flying the airplane is not the airspace violator. That guy probably lost all of his tickets. I built and fly a Van's RV-7A (same model as this guy) and I have to say this is embarrassing for all of us Van's builders and fliers....
...however I think he was to consider the possibility that he experienced a total radio/navigation failure (although it appears that his transponder was still working because ATC was picking up his mode C altitude). If that is the case...he *didn't* do what he should have done..which was squawked 7600 and since he was VFR he should have known how to fly a heading and dead-reckoned to his destination.
@jdpainter My question is...how did he not know where he was? His flight plan shows a long over-water flight, his actual shows him over water. My only "questionable" flight made me look over see an airport I knew I shouldn't see based on my VOR heading, and I called approach (not JFK) and asked for help. At that point, I turned towards where I know I should have been. Why didn't he figure this out. I'm only a student pilot, and I figured it out.
@kmorisen I'm not making excuses for him. It's hard to understand how this guy managed to make us all look bad, but it does happen. Have you ever talked to approach control around NYC? If so, you would understand that it is sometimes near impossible to get a word in on the radio. This intimidates a lot of folks and gives them 'radio fright'. Maybe that's what happened? Maybe not. All I know is this guy could have done about 100 things better.
That pilot was a FULL blown idiot. You NEVER violate airspace like that without being in contact with ATC. I'm sure the FAA ripped his certification right off of him. They should've.
I'm a pilot and my guess would be that after the investigation he could have his license suspended for a certain matter of time. If they find gross negligance he could lose his license and have to go through the whole certification process again to get it back.
He certainly made a huge mistake and we don't know all of the circumstances. If you think there are a lot of rules of the road try being a pilot. Its a lot more complicated.
I'm just a private pilot with a instrument rating so I can fly in the clouds. Another mistake he made was he should have been using Flight Following or Flight Advisories as it is sometimes called. Although he was on a VFR flight where he did not have to talk to ATC if he had asked for advisories where they were talking to him they could have warned him about the mistake he was about to make. Silly not to use it in congested airspace.
Its just about the best feeling in the world.. a freedom that only a small percentage of people keep to see. First time you roll down that runway and take off by yourself is a great feeling. It took me about 5 months to get my initial pilots license.
Actually the cost of the Helicopter is paid by the state... That been said a pilot making false emergency calls over the radio can get fined up to 25,000 $ + could do jail... So violating airspace could eventually get (to my oppinion) very expensive not to mention all the trouble he cause to the controller... He definitivly lost his license for not having the right VTA chart of the area...
