The story of Jack's brother make me remember my grandma story. She also was phisically imperfect... and all in the family never forgot her damaged body...
@SpanishUFOonline Sorry fo hear of that...the world's always never shy to show what it thinks of less-than-perfect people...and I'm not mocking at your grandma cause I am one of those 'imperfect' people' too, so I know how it feels :') Chin up cherie.
One of the saddest scenes ever the poor kid he thought his brother would protect him but he couldnt face it.I felt so sorry for the kid and wanted to jump in and kick all their asses.
As Yonoi is played by R. Sakamoto, a huge pop star at the time, the director wanted him to be hot. Same with Celliers. And the books says that Celliers is extremely good looking. It describes Celliers and Yonoi as birds of a feather. So it makes complete sense to cast two pop idols.
the book's title is The Seed and the Sower/Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence by Laurence van der Post. It should be easily available as van der Post is a pretty well known author.
Are you sure- why do they talk like Aussies then? Oh well- I was never any good at geography and always thought Australia was under Africa until my kids told me otherwise!!
In the novel the protagonists are from SA. Of course, in the film, most actors (apart from the Japanese) are English. Jack Celliers wear a typical "Slouch" hat, aka Australian, but was frequeantly worn by a lot of Allies in Indonesia.Malaysia, Phillipines, etcetera. Who knows, perhaps that's why The Young Ones claim Bowie is an Australian ;)
The old cinema version didn't have that scene, nor has my old dvd. Is it a cut scene? What dvd version is it on? It changes the whole movie and makes it more like the book. Thanks for posting!
This film probably didn't get as much attention as it deserved. Bowie did such a great job in this film. It examined the realtionship between the brothers until the horrific end. I've got to get the film on DVD. Haven't realized how much I've missed it until now.
@Onlydreamin1959 Totally agreed. I was really amazed the director, Nagisa Oshima, manages to capture both Japanese & British sensibilities so well...this film is the one that converted me fr casual admiration to Big Fan ;-)

Brits look closely at this scene; yes it is Implacable yes it is cruel, and YES IT WAS THIS WHAT MADE YOU STRONG,STRUCK TERROR INTO THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO OPPPOSED YOU, but they feel terror no longer. For you have grown soft.Me mum was 12 when war began in '39and she could kick your asses from here to doomsday for you are PUSSIES; God no longer matters, and you have have turned from Him and trust only your '60's B/S and your'e going to get an ass-kicking like you never thought possible.

There is nothing you can do for the one that needs help. The best thing you can do for him is to kick him the balls....

why do the children sound aussie or newzea?
CoolBoysBackYard 2 years ago
Because thats where Celliers came from before the war - his home was in Australia not England

You need the directors cut version - its the reason Celliers does what he does at the end as if to make amends

heck, there is a director's cut of the film???
