The reason it is okay to wear bikinis outside but not bras and undies is because when you wear a bikini, you wearing one for one of two reasons: 1) your going to the pool and/or 2) it is super hot outside and the reason bras and undies are called underwear is because you are suppose to wear them under your clothing.

The practical difference is none, but the psychological side of it plays a mayor role. When you have a bikini on, you have all the clothing that you are expected to wear. On the other side, when you have only bra and panties, it means you are missing a dress or the rest of your clothes. The mind then gives the illusion that you are in the process of undressing. I think it's more of you knowing. If ou wear a swimsuit, then you don't worry, and no one else notices because that's what you're supposed to wear and no one looks at you differently. What if the one layer of fabric is a dark-colored t-shirt? In the summer I prefer not to wear a bra, because it's hot, and that means I'm going to sweat, and that sweat is going to collect in the bra, and that just doesn't feel good.
Swimwear dont always have more then one layer. Depending on the quality of the fabric they dont always need to be lined.. (This coming from a fashion design student who has made a couple high quality swimsuits in school)

Swimwear dont always have more then one layer. Depending on the quality of the fabric they dont always need to be lined.. (This coming from a fashion design student who has made a couple high quality swimsuits in school)

The difference is the material. swimwear is made of waterproof material. and also, bra and panties tend to be more seethrough.
Think about how its odd to see people wearing pajama pants walking around. People do it, but they look stupid. Sort of the same, considering they're the same shape.

its just how society has labeled things, thats all it is, bikini is intended "swim" wear and bra and panties are underwear and when you see it its generally a more intended sexual thing like when you see bra and panties your about to get laid and stuff like that. they may cover the same amount but still the materials and paters on them define whether its racey and inappropriate or totally acceptable if your anywhere remotely close to a beach or anywhere tropical

I don't particularly care.. I mean, there's a difference and you can tell when you see them, but as for what they're covering, they're the same thing. I don't see why people freak out when you see them in their underwear and not in their swimwear... unless they wear different swimwear, in which case it's acceptable to freak out a little. Other than that... whatever.
