I remember dialing u0p on my new 14.4 kpbs modem saying to myself...someday everyone will have a pocket phone with internet so fast you will be able to do video calling and surf the net with it. Everyone thought I was nuts. My 'mobile' phone at the time was the size of a briefcase. You charged it overnight to get 15 minutes of talk time at $1 a minute.
aol was awesome at that time but then I tried to load a flash movie forget about it left it on over night nothing! Now my andriod can easily do that in less than 1 min.
The last time I looked in about 2004, one reason that people still used it, is because they made it almost impossible to cancel. They'll upsell you aggressively, and say anything to snow you over. There were guides on how to cancel, often involving sending a legal form via certified mail. Also, people didn't want to change their email address and didn't know how to reconfigure anything. They thought it would be hard.
There was something warm about dial up with AOL UK at the time, that noise was a confidence booster that told you it was working. I remember moving to ADSL with 1Mb for the first time, my god the difference.
Oh yeah ... dialup was painful. And it was even worse when you had that friend who had high-speed but you didn't, and they would email you a two meg attachment and it would get you all pissed because it would take FOREVER to download your emails when they had attachments.
i remember trying to download blender (3d software program) was 42MB it would get to 20MB and give me a message saying the download timed out and I couldn't resume it from where it left off.... FUCK DIAL UP!
Dial-Up was honestly a great service back in 2000 to 2004, but with the rise of High-Speed sites became optimized for High-Speed. I was on Dial-Up until 2008, but I was still fine with it. I'm one to say I'd rather take the stability of Dial-Up over Comcast.
There was a simpsons flash game, it was only 13MB big, I was on dialup for a whole day and it wouldn't even be half way done.... I never got to play it
Well, I have only good memories about dial-up because it was my first! So even it was...horrible yeah=))) but other ways of communication were or to expensive or not qualified enough. So I miss these days sometimes =) have fun everyone!
Parents are still on aol dial-up. Don't have dsl in their area and they are not keen on going through the cable company since they have satellite and really only use the internet sparingly anyways. In the past I was trying to get them to switch to some of the other cheaper dial up services and they tried it but for them Aol is simpler to use. You just open it and your email, instant messaging, and web browser is there ready to use and it came with spyware and antivirus tools bundled with it
i dont think i ever had dialup, but my grandpa did for around 2 years now he has dsl faster but still not fast enough for me glad i dont have that! Watching a 15 min youtube video on my ipad takes atleast 30-45 minutes!
We had AOL dialup before we got Comcast, and it was HORRIBLE! We had to pick up the phone during the dialup process or it wouldn't connect, and you could go take a shower or fix yourself food while waiting for youtube videos... definitely DON'T miss those days!
My family had two landlines. It never came up, but if we needed to, we could look up stuff on the Internet while still talking on the phone.
I got nostalgic last year and DLed AOLs "bring your own service" software, which you can use for free. It no longer says "You've got mail." Maybe it's an option. Anyway, what made AOL was the chat rooms, only those are a virtual ghost town now. It's a shame AOL took that long with allowing free access for "bring your own." Early last decade, it was still
Oohh the days of dial up, 3 and a half hours for a 14 meg file.. ha ha. And the best bit was that you had to use a download manager cause it would kick you off every 30mins.. good times ;)
My In-Laws live in a rural area and they just got broadband internet last year so trust me I remember very well what it like. The worst part is them trying to use youtube, it would load, then because took so long would load again.
Oh god, i remember the nightmares of Dialup.. try networking 3 computers to use it D: lot of yelling going on. Then dad went back and got us back on Bellsouth DSL which was a load of poo when we had it, and we got comcast and been with them since, and it's been at least 8 or 9 years since we got that
@LiteCastStudios I'm 14, dial-up was pretty cool. Had a £1200 computer with dial-up, and I remember being on Runescape many-a-time when my brother would phone up his girlfriend, disconnect me and then I'd rage like a buttfrustrated faggot.
Found you annoying when you hosted tehkseven, and still find you annoying. Can't believe people don't see that he doesn't care what you think. Seriously are you like the tech version of sxephil because jumpcuts are fucking annoying. Your videos remind me of youtube poops. DSL! Fiber optics are not avalible in to everyone in Queens, NYC. There is not enough bandwith in the area. One would think this would not be true for one of the most populalated cities in the country, but nope.
Oh my God, I remember dial-up! I used to get excited and jump up and down just for a picture! It'd take like five minutes and come in line by line. And I was extatic! Ahhh the 90's... My needs were so simple then.
we had dial-up until 2008 because we where paying by the min my parents only let me use the internet for 30 min a day, but that is not a lot when it takes a youtube video 5 hours to load now we pay $12.50 a month for 1.5 mb/s which is SUPER fast compared to dial-up
To watch a full youtube video in 2007 with dial up (10 minutes), it took between 12 and 24 hours. I know from experience. I've had broadband for a while now. It's amazing.
in Briton , some lan speeds are so bad that they are only a faction faster than dialup, but thats for certain providers only, obsly, however i think the thing with america is how in some areas , there is only one or two providers.
i have broadband at my apartment (20mb) but when i go at my parents house i have to stick with 3g connection, which is as bad as dial up fyi... lol ... so when i have to rely on 3g only all i do is use twitter some previously downloaded games and read my fav blog. with some patience i can check memebase, also
I rember taking all the fones in my house and put them in my room so no one would cut my internet time off....and that internet was sooo effin slow....

I had earth link (does anyone even remember this company? lol) and I would write down my favorite numbers that I knew had a great connection (yes numbers) to dial up and connect too.
FYI, there are vast areas of rural Michigan where they have NO choice! Too much acerage, not enough people, greedy cable companies won't lay lines to provide service. So, it's dial up or NO up. TV is through satellite which is always blown down by storms; they can only check emails with no downloads. Man, that sucks!
dial up? I remember BBS 's and 2400 baud modems, hell I still have a tandy 100 with a built in 300 Baud and acoustic coupler. So what does 300 baud mean? more or less 300 characters a second (actually with overhead and error checking more like 200) Back then it would take literally hours to download a program that was less then a meg.... yup, I said meg! Video? Forget about it!
I remember I still had dial-up until sometime in 2002-2003. Then a nice local ISP brought out a 600kbps cable package. Oh, sweet mother sensual Internet delights, 600kbps was GOEGEOUS then. Now? That crap's lower than the 3G speed I would get on my phone!
i upgraded from AOL dialup to charter cable internet earlier this year, i cannot believe i put myself through that much HELL for so long!! it used to take 30 minutes to watch ONE youtube video!!
Oh gosh, I remember. It took a couple mins to load FB. I don't know if it was just us, but we could pick up the phone and talk on it and it would play on the computers speakers while on internet.
lol my parents still have AOL dial-up because they can't get anything better where they live. I'll hate the day they get a faster service because they already send me too much junk mail.
Tried to play Quake III Arena on dial-up. Almost always ended in ragequit.

Dial-Up internet was possibly the most frustrating things that I had ever gone through.
It was my first time using the net and I'd go on Cartoonnetwork(Sucks now) to play the
adventure games. It took 7 minutes to freaking load the game and half way through the
damn thing, some body would call and knock the internet off. That made me furious lol.
You can't do ANYTHING about it.You just watched as all the f'king windows began closing
and then "Goodbye - Goodbye Ding Ding" Sound.Omg!Traumatizing!

phsycoblah 3 months ago
I remember I still had dial-up until sometime in 2002-2003. Then a nice local ISP brought out a 600kbps cable package. Oh, sweet mother sensual Internet delights, 600kbps was GOEGEOUS then. Now? That crap's lower than the 3G speed I would get on my phone!
