Looking back at the show, I find it both sad and amazing to realize that it's basically the story of a young man who returns home to Los Angeles to spend the last few years of his life with his family and loved ones.
@NorthernElumination I think Nate was drawing him back home to spend the time with the family he needed. To have the child that he was supposed to have and leave the world the way he was supposed to leave it.
@kemchobhenchod You're totally right. Great films and series need to be watched "backwards" too. And looking back to this after the end of the series is very moving.
God, this just takes me to the floor.. It's so haunting and soulful. Could be my beautiful son who took his life looking wistfully over his shoulder as the bus pulls away. It's my past, the laughter and sorrows echoing scenes from life. I'm waiting and I hope he's waiting. Just so tasteful in it's creation. I love the signs on the benches and the cinematography captures the feeling of isolation, of everything in your world stopping while the rest of the world moves on. Thank you.
I may be a little nihilist, but imho this song + this scene means only one thing: we are all just visitors and we are all waiting for one thing, which is... death.
@Elliotohyeah How's that? It's about Nate recovering from his emotional trauma, and moving on with his life. That's the meaning of the 'no loitering' sign, imo - let go of your pain, or life will pass you by, like the pedestrians he stares at.
this show..aww man if there was ever a show that gave me bit n pieces of knowledge going thru life as well as prespective on certain things..this show was a classic i could never get tired of watching it..it helped me in a lot of ways deal with the loss of loved ones, heartbreak..theres a few classic scenes such as this one but theres so much more
I've watched this ending quite a bit of times and i just noticed that the bench Nathaniel Sr is sitting on before he gets on the bus says "Accident?" call blah blah blah, you know? That was done on purpose. Love this show.
i love how nate watches all the people walk by him, followed by the ' no loitering' sign. another words, stop waiting around around or life will pass you by. brilliant series.
I love how his dad's sitting on a bench that says 'Accident?', gets on a bus 'A Good Night's Sleep', and leaves Nate standing in front of a 'No Loitering' sign.

@kemchobhenchod oh wow it is that way, so Nate Sr. dying was sort of the push Nate Jr. needed, eh?

One of the absolute best pilot episodes ever. There was just no way for a sane person not to get hooked after this emotional scene.

I loved this scene- did not like the pilot.
Watching the second episode- better so far.
The pilot was over the top in "Humor"(Stupidity) and the Drama.

Am I the only one who thought the 'No Loitering' sign with Nate looking dazed and totally freaked out was kind of funny?

Accident? A Good Nights Sleep? No Loitering? Everything about this scene was premeditated. Phenomenal film-making.
