I made thirty of these and found it to be a bad system. The soil at the bottom stays wet all the time, gets foul and you end up with root rot. Better off with one bucket, some gravel in the bottom with lots of holes underneath. If self watering is important, do a drip system.
why are you using two buckets and the center basket when you can make two self watering buckets by simple using the lids , take a look at the way i build mine much easier and a lot less work same exact results
@SolarizeYourLife actually a lot of companies do replant.. some even are at 100% between natural regrowth and replanting. Yes more still need to get to this level but we do harvest a high percentage from replanted forests now rather than from old growth.
@marthale7 I found them at a second hand store. It was a basket for flatware for an electric dishwasher. However, anything that will reach the bottom of the outer bucket from the bottom of the inner bucket will do. A small flower pot with holes drilled in it will work just as well. Best of luck, and happy gardening.
@marthale7 it's a small strainer, like the ones used to strain water out of pasta, found at any store dealing with kitchen supplies, even thrift and used item stores should have them for cheap.
you likely have one in a cupboards or in a large drawer somewhere's in your kitchen.
It is a shame the Forest Service has to do what the Lumber Industry refuses to do, replant the trees they fell and made huge profits from. No wonder, free product, no cost to replanting.

might be tricky cutting the top apart to get the tree out later. may be best to cut it in half 1st.

You make a good point. Thanks. Tin snips work wonders. Then again, it will be many years before it will be necessary.
