It's not discrimination by species. It's what's sustainable and what isn't. Cows and chickens are farmed specifically for food. Their numbers are not threatened, they will not go extinct. Whales, however, are not farmed for food. Larger takes would not be sustainable. Yes, a few species like Minke whales have recovered to the point where some limited whaling may be in order. However, this whaling should be carefully monitored to avoid the mistakes of the past and further extinctions.
I would also like to add that some cetaceans are extremely intelligent, and for this reason alone I think should not be slaughtered. Leave the humpbacks, bowheads, and blue whales alone, I say, in simple recognition of their intellect and capacity for pain.

I dont think the arguement in this really stands up. I think the point of anti whaling campaigns is to protect an endangered species and the ecosystem that they live in. The other animals mentioned are farmed, whereas whales are taken from the wild. Why don't the japs step up and say the truth why they really are killing whales.The Japanese say they're doing it for scientific reasons, but it's just a cover.Whales are not like cows or pigs they can never be domesticated they don't belong on your stomach they belong on the sea. ICRW article 10(e) requires scientific research to lift of change the moratorium. That is why Japan needs to conduct the research whaling. How could Japan change the moratorium without the research then?
Are you against any sustainable use of wild animal resources? There are 83 kinds of whales and some are endangered, but some are not. Japan hunts minke whales and minke is not endangered at all.

It's not discrimination by species. It's what's sustainable and what isn't. Cows and chickens are farmed specifically for food. Their numbers are not threatened, they will not go extinct. Whales, however, are not farmed for food. Larger takes would not be sustainable. Yes, a few species like Minke whales have recovered to the point where some limited whaling may be in order. However, this whaling should be carefully monitored to avoid the mistakes of the past and further extinctions.

Secondly, there's no efforts currently to sustainably farm whales. Only to harvest them. No artificial breeding program is in place to ensure that this harvest is sustainable. So if you have "high-technology", use it already.

I believe that everyone is unfair with you because, as you say Itadakimasu-san, all humans are equally cruel (and for me it's ok since we are like that in order to live).... I am Japanese and I am against catching whales. They are close to becoming extinct from this planet. I understand your argument point , itadakimasu san.We all have to kill some kind of animals in order to live unless you are a complete vegetarian. But the issue here is a bit different I believe. When we kill every whales in the ocean , there will be NO MORE WHALES left. Did you ever think about that? Same rule applies for catching blue fins and tuna and all the other big fish in the ocean.

I think this video is right and all, but I also think many get carried away and start judging "white people" (personally I prefer caucasian) why sink to the level of racism? I'm sure we all have learned not to judge people from their looks, colour and nationality and when you tell us not to judge your culture but then starts talking about "ignorant western culture" etc. Don't you think you are making the same misstake? just a thought (sorry if my english sucks btw)

Being Japanese, I never realised the significance of these words until recently. As a Japanese child, we said it to thank the person (my mother in this case) who prepared our meal. This made me rethink about itadakimasi and gochisousama.

捕鯨問題に対しては「鯨は知能が高いから、でも他の生き物は？」という理由で中立的な意見を持っていましたが、それも差別だったのかもしれません。
あと日本人の書き込みで他国を過剰に非難するコメントが多く見られますが出来ればいつか、日本人も含めてお互いに偏見のない国際交流とか出来たら良いなと思いました(理想的すぎるかな。。

良い動画ですが、日本人にとって当り前の価値観も、多くは神道、仏教、儒教などから来ています。
それを当然のようにコメントすれば、宗教の押し付けになり、相手を不快にさせるかもしれません。
オーストラリアの方も同様に、相手の立場を理解する努力が必要です。
他文化と分かり合うことの難しさを自覚しないと、不毛な言い争いになるだけです。

I dont think the arguement in this really stands up. I think the point of anti whaling campaigns is to protect an endangered species and the ecosystem that they live in. The other animals mentioned are farmed, whereas whales are taken from the wild. I guess if the japanese farmed the whales they ate there would'nt be the same anti whaling champaign, but Im sure some would still have a problem with it. Vegetarianism is a better way I think, its not perfect but its a good start!
