Great get away spot. Love the cabin, did you build it yourself? As to your hydro project, very smart! Replace the garden hose with 2" PVC black well tubing, it resists suction well. Connect to a 4' x 6" sec40 PVC collection pipe+screener up stream. What's needed is pressure, a large inlet will supply it. You can get more if wanted, around 500watts+ if done correctly. Keep us posted.. Well done!
@mik22pik I like your sugestions ,they are well thought out. I will soon put up a video reply to this spoon powered hydro project just because enough time has passed for most of this glitches in this project to have revealed themselves. Thanks for the reply.
I really like this generating system! Runs 24hours a day, at 5 watts, no need for any special circuitry to turn on and off. The use of that hand generator flashlight was genius! Oh, and the cabin is AMAZING! You're inspireing me mr 186282plus1!
@tfc8BALL I iso9001, how has your cabin in the woods gone so far? Finding too much gold to chop wood? Too much school work? It's nice to hear from you! I hope all is well.
Awesome job and good thinking. I built a micro hydro also .I don't have much drop so I did it a little different .If you get time check my videos maybe you will get some more ideas as I did from yours TAKE CARE
how many feet does your water source drop to your MHG? how many GPH do you figure is coming out of your nosel? Our creek is about 300 feet from my cabin site, i'm toying with the idea of converting my potential energy to kinetic energy down there and running a power cable from my MHG to my batteries up at the cabin, i need to study how much energy loss is involved in a 300 foot run and find free cable.
Hi dTd, sorry for the late reply. This creek drops about 45 feet to the hydro generator over a length of about 90 feet. The amount of water that is taken is only about 2 gallons a minute simply because the creek does slow to about that volume in August and I would like year around electricity. I've studied this system for 2 weeks now and found a few flaws. One is that the fawcet at the dam site was never designed to have suction on it so there is air leaking into the system from the fawcet seal.
The other problem is that the hose has slowly collapsed at the upper section due to the suction that is continously on it so it has slowed down and will probably soon only allow a small portion of the water through. I really should be replacing it with a solid walled pipe, a 1 inch would work well and surprisingly it works out to be about the same price as a hose of the same length but with far better efficiency. But the hassle will be in getting it to the site and smashing out the old fawcet.
my plan is to capture water in a 3" pipe and reduce down to 2" about 50 feet later then reduce down to 1" another 50 feet later then down to garden hose, i might be able to use something in the 3/8" range as the jet to use super high pressure / low volume to turn an 80amp 12v car alternator... im still gathering free materials
Your project sounds like a well thought out one dTd, I'd sure like to see your video of the build when you do put it together. 1,000 watts can run quite a bit of stuff.
Hey man it was great to see your project , DirTdude and I have been talking about making a micro hydro generator for some time now he's totaly pumped to get that project going , we have been slowly working on a cistern up on a rock out crop I wanted to do it so we could have some sort of fire abatement , seeing your contraption makes me lean towards dTd idea , and by the way you are indeed welcome to tour if you find yourself in our neck of the woods .
well ,that kind of blew me away, again another COOL tool, never saw anything quite like it,low budget and it works, great! would like to learn more about it,maybe you have a website?thanks Bruce
wow! I'm speechless, I'll be back when i can think of something to say that is worthy of your log cabining excellence. oh, by the way, jayjay and I super duper invite you to come down to our cabin and we would also really enjoy visiting your cabin too. might be fun...
Thanks dTd, I always appreciate your comments and yes that would be a blast to do a tour of our cabins. I wouldn't mind getting some ideas from your heater/stove unit that you have at your cabin. How about when it warms up this spring.
Nice and simple set up mate! great work and same about the vid!
