MANY THANKS FOR SINGING MY SONG AND ALL THE WONDERFUL COMMENTS I AM READING. I WROTE TIS SONG IN 1978 IT IS A SONG ABOUT MY GRANDMOTHER FROM IRELAND SHE DID HAVE SIX SONS AND MY FATHER WAS THE YOUNGEST. MANY THANKS AGAIN. LUV AND STUFF TO ALL. MICK COLEMAN.XXXXX
Love the song but I prefer the version where Michael and Brian sing it. Can't find that version anywhere, if you know please put it on youtube or let me know where to find it. It's the version that my grandparents would play for me.
I discovered this unknown gem while looking for a different song. Glad I did. We had a double-LP of the Irish Rovers, but this song wasn't on it. They were something else again.
My friends the Irish Rovers and best friend back in Sydenhan ,N.Ireland Jimmy Ferguson ,we bit overweight here , sadly Jimmy passed away about 10 years ago only in his 50.s.
They dont make men like that Grandpa anymore. May the Lord look down and send me one who has the courage to love me the way he loved her. Granny was a lucky woman.
Thank you for posting. The first time I heard this song was in 1979, broadcasted on tv, when they did a concert in Vancouver. It has been one of my favorite songs ever since.
blackpoolmadteacher, you should get your facts right, many people from the island of ireland died in the 2nd world war, northern ireland was and is part of the uk and many people from the republic of ireland signed up to join many different uk regiments
This is an old Northern English song made famous by Brian and Michael.
The song was the "B" side of Matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs.
"Wrote it all along the gasworks wall" and "The war it cut the family down to more than half it's size" suggests the circa of the song too. Not many Irish lost their lives during the World War 2 as they stayed nuteral throughout it.
@RobbieTyler1 um dude they look like Irish men of their age. Nothing sterotyped about it. None of them were/are exactly young so it was pretty normal for them to dress the way they did considering when they grew up. By the way I am Irish and its not them that annoys me. Long live The Rovers and good old tunes like these.
@painnneck I have Irish relations, I think everyone does...your location says USA but you are Irish, when did you move away? I have had many good holidays over there in ireland...

@madmo32
10,000 Irish men dies in WW2 fighting with Irish regiments in the British Army.
I was stating a fact, nothing more. My facts are right.
388,000 British people died during WW2, including civilians in our bombed cities.
WW1 947,000 British people lost their lives, don't know how many Irish.
Anyway, great song, I used to sing it 33 years ago when i was a kid.

how sterotyped irish do they look??
they look ridiculous, if I were irish i would be annoyed.
you are expecting someone to sneak past in the background with a pot of gold.
