Hi Nina!!!! Why is it so hard to geta high F sharp and a high E natural? Everytime I try to play it it starts of rough and the note either comes or doesnt come at all. Do you have an suggestions? Thank you!!!!! =)
Nina would you be so kind to explain once more how to add resonance to the sound? Just write the main principles please. Thank you very much. You are the great teacher in the world!!!
cool demo. Flute is one of those instruments that is all about embouchure muscle tone. One needs to practice every day for at least 2 hours. You know when you have achieved the correct embouchure when it seems like you are using the same embouchure for low notes as you use in the highest register. It is amazing, then, how easy it is to bounce between registers.
I have an issue, when playing, to roll my bottom lip in. It seems it's a habit that was developed unknown to my middle school band teacher (who blamed it on my flute since it's open holed) and myself. Your videos help me a lot, do you have any ideas on how I could work on stopping this habit?
Nina I watching part 1 of the video and I noticed I crush my bottom lip, especially when playing very low notes like the C so I'm trying this new position.
I'm now playing low on the chin and rolled out but is it normal that everything now sounds even more airy? I'm also a lot more sharp now, and my tuner said I was extremely sharp as well. :(
@bewbala if it sounds airy and out of tune, it is not the correct position - it could be positioned wrong on your body and/or an issue with how you are angling the air into the flute. USE your ear as a guide always and if you want a lesson or consulatation with me, let me know.
Ive been playing the flute forabout 2 years. and, the first ive played the flute I am not exactly how well i sounded,
and for the past year ive been playing with braces. I do not know if they have affected my sound/tone. I am going to try your method, but within a year or a little more my braces will be removed. will that affect my sound/tone?
Thanks for the videos. I live in Ireland and tradtional music on simple system flutes, but find your advice on embochure and resonance very helpful. I play every day and have for years and am still constantly thinking about and practicing sound production and embochure. Thanks again and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
do you have any advice for playing with braces? my sound is so airy it's insane. i used to be first chair before i got my braces and now i'm last in my band class. people laugh at me when i play now, too. i can barely get out any high notes. and when i do, they sound horrible. any advice?
In 2 weeks your sound will be 2 weeks better than it is today, hopefully! You will never stop working on sound production, it is something your perfect and maintain your entire musical life. I have been playing more than 25 years and I still work on it regularly!
What a great way to explain purity and resonance! I love your clear explanations...I'll be sure to pass on the wisdom to my students. You are surely changing the flute world for the better. Bless you!
That's really really great!! But sometimes when I am playing the flute for a few minutes non-stop, i got saliva in my mouth and the sound is no longer sweet. What should I do?
Hi Nina! I just want to say that I tried this and I thank you because it works!! I have one problem though :( The resonancy works great, but sometimes when I play I think that I'm overdoing it somehow. The flute will vibrate a whole lot and it will sound like a tuning fork hit a bell. The sound is no longer sweet as a flute should be. The sound will be in tune, but there are so many vibrations in it, the vibrations are basically all that you hear: a tuning fork! What should I do to correct this?
ok so i started the flute about 6 months ago and i played with it on my lip like you not supposed to do lol and i got good sound and im trying the way your teaching and its coming out a lot worse sounding and airey is it that im not used to the sound or is it im not angleing it right?? i have to march in the parade on saturday for the 4th of July playing the flute and im prolly just gonna go back to the old way cuz it sounds better and i get a lot more sound out of it prolly cuz its still new :)
gymnastman: Use your ear to guide you. If the sound is worse, you are not in the correct position so don't play that way!!! Watch my video on "how to use my teaching videos"
I'm gonna practice really hard this summer (liek, everyday). I'm in 7th, adn the All-State Band Tryouts for Washington are coming up, adn I wanna get that. My friend's sister made it, so I can! XDD
Hmm. some other suggested high notes.. me too. I'm trying out for allstate this (next school year) year. I need to do a 3 octave scale up to 3rd C, and something sounds really wrong with it, like its wicked flat.
I Love this Video and also I checked out your Channel. Very interesting! If you need any help getting this Video and your Channel exposed to were it is top in all the search I found this site called tubeviews.(net) that has took my breath away. I'm working on my 4th Channel now, this one I just made. My Videos are getting so many hits now. Check it out and keep in touch.
I always wondered how Emmanuel Pahud and other great flutists play their flute with so much fuller and resonant sound. Now I know what I had to strive for after playing my flute for about 9 years with the first type of sound from your flute which had pure, clear sound but lacking in resonance. One question: Did you find it easier for you to change quickly from low octave notes to higher octave notes and vice versa when you discovered to play with more resonant sound? Thanks.
thank you so much Nina for your fantastic lessons! I am trying to learn how to play flute myself, at home, and these lessons are precious. so resonance is the word!:D I heard it before but could never understand how is is made... thank you very very much!!
I totally agree with you in this video. The clear sound was like a church girl in Sunday service and the resonant sound was like the finale of an Opera.
I just wanna inform everyone that you most likely won't be able to sound like Nina within your first 5 minutes of playing with a resonating sound. Some it'll take about 2 hours, but some will take about 2 months. So if you don't get it the first time just try, try again.
Amazing Job NINA!!! You're an inspiration to us all!!!
hello :) i was wondering if you could help with getting a nice sound on really high notes. my high notes always get a really airy sound.
I've been playing since I was 9 - I'm 19 now... only band teachings and 1yr of personal lessons - but I stoped playing when I got braces - its hard having to relearn everything without a personal teacher... but I can not afford one...I really appreciate your videos!!!
(sorry for bad grammer/spelling I have a cheap keyboard with sticky keys *_*)
Wow that is a HUGE difference! It sounded... Alive? Yah. Thats the word. Like there was actually some life force playing the instrument and not a robot or Finale.
You just solved what my teacher and I struggled with for my entire undergrad degree. I kept trying to get the 'pure' sound, but when I listened to recordings it sounded empty and almost 'sharp' like the first one you played. Now I know what to work on....I love breakthroughs like this!! Now it's just practicing it and "unlearning" the way I did before.... thank you!!!!
your videos are really very helpful! I`m playing since July 2007 and (mostly) I can play a clear sound. But when you play it with vibrato it sounds MUCH better. I would like to play it too, but also with your video (vibrato) I`m not able to do it. When is the best time to lern vibrato ??
Thanks for these posts! I'm just starting on flute on my sister's old, barely working flute, after about 5 years of playing alto, soprano, and bari sax.
Don't put so much pressure to yourself~ you're only a beginner so relax. But it's good that your'e enjoying it! That is the most important part of playing an instument, but people these days loose their enjoyment because they are forced to play and instument.
Hi Nina!!!, thank you for your help!. You play so beautiful, and your videos have been helpful for me. I´m Chilean and I´m a beginner with the flute, my main problem it´s the lowest register. I would like to play powerful notes, but I only achieve to play weak and powerless notes.
I would be grateful if you help me, some advice it will be helpful for me...
Nina, I've been told by several judges whom I've played for, that I have a beautiful sound. One judge said he liked it and thought it was "subdued". I wasn't sure if "subdued" was a good or bad thing. In your video you mentioned that a pure and clear sound loses resonance ... do you think that I might be losing resonance because I'm working hard to get a clean sound? Should "subdued" be a good or bad thing?
I can't comment on your sound without actually hearing it. Remember, you have to hear and listen to understand your sound (or someone else's). Listening is key. If the judge said he liked it, then it was meant as a compliment.
Thanks for this hints. I used to play a metalic flute like yours but it has broken. Then I have made my own flutes by PVC tubes and bamboo. Your videos helps a lot.
Oh, thank you so much for your reply. When using headjoint alone, it seems going well. I'll keep practising.
When you play the resonate sound, you look to blow with more strength. Did you use the same strengh of breath to blow both clear poor sound and the resonate rich sound? The latter sounds really powerful.
Your lesson is great help. Please keep on. I'll study a lot.
Yes, the lip does cover probably 25%-50% of the hole. Use your ear to tell you the right amount. Start with headjoint alone. There will be some embouchure closeups in some of my upcoming articulation videos. Stay tuned.
the resonance of the tube will tell you more than anything if the sound hitting the edge properly, with open holes your fingers should feel the sound travelling underneath the keys. pretty cool sensation and if your set up is all good, your low register actually should feel effortless as you play D and C.
I really do not hear so much difference in your examples. Your sound without vibrato, with vibrato "without resonating", and with faster vibrato and "resonating", all sound great!
"RECORD YOURSELF!!!" I don't know how many times I've been told that but it's unbelievable the difference of what I am hearing up close and at a distance!
