She is terrific as Turandot. For me, the number one Turandot is Birgit Nilsson but here Gwyneth is as good as Nilsson and clearly inspired by Nilsson. She has the right type of dramatic and heavy voice for the part and commits to the character's powerful persona

I admit that Jones' voice is amazing. But her acting is....a little too much. Sutherland was the greatest in the role, with Montserrat as Liu. Great recording.
I commend you, you must have very good ears, . I love sutherlnad voice too and Joan Sutherland and Birgit NIlsson are among the greatest to sing this role, however Gwenth Jones is pretty good too.
Gwyneth Jones was for many years the world´s BEST Turandot. Huge voice, shining top notes and great acting. She had triumphs all around the world. Brava, brava, brava Gwyneth!!!!!!
oula oula which saw Caballé or Jones in Turandot?.... me. And without wanting to be pretentious nor to want to give lessons, Caballé ranked very much above Jones who was affublé of horrible vibrato (for memory Caballé general representation 1980 - Jones Turandot Arena de Nîmes/France 1986 with Seta Dell Grande...). Thanks.
They all look rather Japanese than Chinese. Gwyneth Jonese looks more like the ghost of Cio-cio-san! I hate this sort of generic "oridental" productions. If they wanted to change things around, they could've had more fun with it the way Dorris Dorrie did in Berlin a few years ago.
I saw that production at the Berlin Staatsoper last year. I really liked it, especially the firs act, but what I didn't like was the use of the Berio ending. The music just doesn't work for me.
actually, what is considered 'chinese' clothing is from the manchurian costuming from the qing dynasty. turandot takes place in the ming dynasty before the qing dynasty, and at that time, the clothing was the hanfu, which is similar to the japanese kimono. so technically, this production is accurate, although we are much more accustomed to seeing a more manchurian style in turandot.
I like Gwyneth Jones myself, I just thought the voice was too big here. Her acting was good, except that part when she should've been happy. I could see that she was trying to put the character in shock, but hey, not like that!
Great acting, but the singing is off. Wish we could merge her acting with Caballes production. I was shocked at how good Monsterrat sounded in this but she was boring. Here we have the best interpretation ever but shaky technique.
I don't think the technique was shaky at all, or her career wiould not have lasted as long as it did (30+ years). She had off nights, like any singer. The problem is in the size of the voice. With a voice as big as this, an off night gets noticed MUCH more than a smaller voice like Caballe, which give you the rep of being "uneven". Jones was an AMAZING singer; whith a voice this big you have to have techniwue to be able to do anything at ALL with it.
Coming back to this, you are right. I am totally captivated by it now. Though you should really check out Caballes In Questa now that Onegin is back. Both are great but for totally different reasons.
I love Caballe; I really really do, but in a role this heavy she's not my favorite. IMHO Caballe was not at her considerable best in high dramatic roles; she was just a bit overmatched and sounded like she was at the very limits of her technique. However, it is a testament to Caballe's technique that she could sing roles like this without serious damage to that incredible instrument. She, like Jones, was a unique, singular talent, and no one else could do the things that made her so unique.
Everyone seems to have hangups about Dame Gwyneth's vocal production...the woman was one of THE greatest singing actresses and her voice's distinction only served to further distinguish her performances.
I know I'm going to get assaulted for this, but in prime Gwyneth Jones I heard a better Turandot than in Nilsson. Warmer, more vulnerable, but will with the core of ice.

Although this Turandot looks like the girl from The Ring

Turandot productions always base their costumes on Hanfu instead of manchurian Qipao, which makes me happy

Franco is the only chinese looking. The scenery, masks, dresses and wigs of the others are on the other hand japanese.

I have to get this complete.
Jones actually knows what this is all about.

Gwyneth Jones was a great vocal actress some what like Rysanek. Jones should have had a stellar career.

Dame Gwyneth is quite divine here. One of her greatest assumptions, in my view.
SCN2003 4 years ago
Her voice is woeful, it wobbles worse than callas's in 1974. and it'd be nice if she fixed her pitch.
Joeleole 4 years ago
Absolutley wonderful! She is my favorite Turandot along with Nilsson
DIVOTENOR 5 years ago
I like the drama she gives here. Similar to the oriental stage performers of a mad Kabuki woman.

First : I find the video sound to be quite low. Second : Dame Gwyneth is very intense but her vocal production is quite forced in some parts.
